Sadolin Garden Furniture Stain and Protector

Sadolin Garden Furniture Stain and Protector is a 2-in-1 wood stain and protective coating for all wooden garden furniture.

Timber surfaces to be treated must be suitably prepared, clean, sound and dry. The moisture content should not exceed 18% prior to coating.

Bare or New Timber

1. Resinous deposits should be removed with a scraper
2. Any remaining residues should be removed using a lint-free cloth dampened with methylated spirits, frequently changing the face of the cloth
3. Allow solvent to evaporate fully before over-coating
4. Timber in ground contact (e.g. support posts) should be preservative-treated in accordance with the relevant standards
5. Remove any surface salts left after preservative treatment with clean water and allow to dry
6. Organic growths must be removed and infected surfaces should be treated with a suitable mould and mildew cleaner
7. Fill any gaps or imperfections in the wood with Sadolin Wood Filler or Sadolin Stainable Wood Filler
8. Only use non-ferrous screws, nails and fixings
9. Any non-preservative-treated softwood timber should be treated with two liberal coats of Sadolin Quick Drying Wood Preserver, paying particular attention to end grains and allowing 24 hours drying time between coats, prior to over-coating with Sadolin Garden Furniture Stain

Old Timber

1. Weathered and denatured surfaces should be thoroughly abraded and / or stiff bristled brushed back to a clean bright surface
2. Remove any decayed areas and replace with new timber

Previously Treated Timber

This product is not suitable for use on surfaces where a higher build finish has been used previously. In such cases, all previous coatings should be removed completely and the surfaces treated as 'New Timber'.

1. All defective coatings should be completely removed with a suitable product stripper / remover
2. Remaining sound surfaces should be cleaned using warm water and mild detergent and rinsed thoroughly with clean water
3. Do not use Garden Furniture Stain and Protector on substrates which have had water-repellent preservative treatments applied
4. On timber previously treated with creosote or similar water-repellent treatments, ensure that they are well weathered and do not retain any smell or 'oily' surface
5. This can be tested by splashing with water, if the water is readily absorbed, then treatment with Sadolin Garden Furniture Stain should be satisfactory

Applying Sadolin Garden Furniture Stain and Protector

Always do a small test area before beginning any project to assess the colour, consistency and compatibility of the finish. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times.

Conditions

Do not apply if there is a risk of rain, or when air / substrate temperatures are below 8°C or above 25°C, or if the relative humidity is above 80% during application or drying periods. Protect from frost and rain until dry. Failure to meet these requirements may adversely affect the drying, visual quality and durability of the finish.

Initial Procedure

Ensure product is thoroughly stirred before and during application, otherwise sheen and colour variations may be experienced. Sadolin Garden Furniture Stain and Protector is supplied ready for use. Do not thin.

Application

1. For best results use a good quality, synthetic fibre bristle brush specifically designed for the application of waterborne products
2. On new woodwork, wherever possible, the initial coat should be applied to all concealed surfaces prior to fixing
3. Apply 2 liberal coats of Sadolin Garden Furniture Stain, ensuring all surfaces are coated to saturation and the end grain refuses to absorb any more
4. Ensure all areas coming into ground contact are fully coated
5. Allow 4-6 hours drying time between coats
6. Avoid over-spreading as this will reduce the long term durability and performance of the coating system

Cleaning Equipment

Clean brushes and equipment with warm, soapy water and rinse with clean water immediately after use. If spilled, the stain should be removed immediately while still wet, using clean water.

Maintenance

The need for maintenance is indicated by a lightening in colour, reduction in sheen as the coating erodes, and a loss of water-repellent qualities.

1. All defective coatings should be completely removed
2. Any grey denatured exposed timber surfaces must be thoroughly sanded back to clean, bright timber
3. Organic growths must be removed and infected surfaces should be treated with a suitable fungicidal solution
4. Remaining sound surfaces should be cleaned using warm water and a mild detergent, then rinsed thoroughly with clean water
5. Bare timber should be patch primed with one or more coats of Sadolin Garden Furniture Stain and Protector in the appropriate colour to match the existing colour
6. Finish with 1 or 2 coats of Sadolin Garden Furniture Stain as required
