Back

Sadolin Quick Dry UV Protection Woodstain is a water-based translucent woodstain that has been formulated to last up to 10 Years to offer maximum protection for both interior and exterior wood. It is rainproof in 20 minutes and recoatable after 4-6 hours meaning you can complete your job in a day.

It's highly flexible, microporous formulation ensures that the surface can breathe, and move with wood as it expands and contracts with the changing weather. Long term durability is then provided through it's resistance to peeling, flaking and blistering.

Please Note: this product is not suitable for use on wooden decking or floors. For decking, see Sadolin Decking Oil, or alternatively our full range of decking treatments.

Preparation

Preparation

Timber surfaces must be suitably prepared, clean, sound and dry. The moisture content should not exceed 18% prior to coating.

General Timber Advice

  • Resinous deposits should be removed
  • Degrease any exposed bare timber by wiping with a lint-free cloth dampened with methylated spirits
  • Allow the solvent to fully evaporate
  • Abrade sound timber surfaces in the direction of the grain using medium/medium fine grade (P180/P240) pads/abrasive paper (nothing metallic), taking care not to damage or scratch across surfaces
  • Remove dust
  • Knotting agents should not be used prior to application of Sadolin systems
  • Use Sadolin Wood Filler to make good any minor surface defects. General or all-purpose fillers are not suitable
  • It is recommend to use of non-ferrous screws, nails, and fixings. Exposed ferrous items may corrode and break the coating film over time if not suitably primed/treated prior to decorating

New Timber

  • All surfaces must be sound, suitably dry, and free from anything that will interfere with the adhesion of the materials to be applied
  • Timber exposed to the elements for longer than two weeks should be thoroughly sanded back to clean, bright timber
  • Organic growths should be treated with a suitable fungicidal solution and coat any non-treated wood with two liberal coats of Sadolin Quick Drying Wood Preserver paying particular attention to end grains.
  • Allow 24 hours before overcoating
  • Where possible, the basecoat, Sadolin Quick Dry UV Protection Woodstain, should be applied, all round, prior to fixing.

Previously Coated Timber

  • All surfaces must be sound, suitably dry, and free from anything that will interfere with the adhesion of the materials to be applied
  • Remove all defective coatings. Grey denatured timber should be mechanically sanded back to clean, bright timber and treat as new
  • Organic growths should be treated with a suitable fungicidal solution and removed
  • Remaining sound surfaces should be cleaned with warm water and mild detergent, rinse thoroughly with clean water, and allow to dry
  • Lightly abrade in the direction of the grain, taking care not to break the surface coating, remove dust
  • If a coloured base stain is required in order to match the existing factory applied coating, use Sadolin Quick Dry UV Protection Woodstain in the most appropriate colour.

Glazing

  • The backs of new glazing beads, end grains and rebates should be coated prior to fixing
  • Joinery should be glazed using a suitable sealant prior to coating
  • Silicone glazing materials should only be applied upon completion of coating
  • To confirm compatibility, please consult the manufacturer of the relevant glazing material

Application

Application

Back

Always do a small test area before starting any project to assess the colour and compatibility of the finish. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times.

Avoid applying in direct sun and onto warm or hot surfaces.

Exterior Application: New Timber - 3 coats are required to achieve durability. Previously coated timber - patch stain with Sadolin Year Quick Dry UV Protection Woodstain, followed by 2 full coats of Sadolin Quick Dry UV Protection Woodstain

Interior Application: New timber - 2- 3 coats to achieve required depth of colour. Previously coated timber: patch stain with Sadolin Quick Dry UV Protection Woodstain followed by a full coat of Sadolin Quick Dry UV Protection Woodstain. On interior surfaces where extra durability is required e.g. Skirting boards and doors, we would recommend a further application of 2 coats of Sadolin Polyurethane Extra Durable Varnish.

  1. Stir well before and during use
  2. Use a good quality synthetic bristle brush
  3. Apply in a full flowing coat, maintaining a wet edge
  4. Ensure all surfaces, tops and bottoms of doors, end grains and undersides of cills are coated
  5. Avoid overspreading
  6. Allow 4 - 6 hours drying time between coats

Aftercare

Aftercare

Back

Maintenance requirement is indicated by lightening of colour, reduction in sheen or loss of water repellence. Between maintenance redecoration, surfaces may be washed with a warm water and liquid detergent solution to remove surface dirt, rinse with clean water, and allow to dry.

Can Sadolin water-based UV Woodstain go over years gone by, old, previously treated timber when I've used Sadolin Classic solvent-based Woodstain?

We would advise you to completely remove the solvent-based stain and go back to bare wood so that the water-based formula can adhere and protect the timber.

Easy to apply
Good consistency, doesn't run off the brush so makes it easy to apply. Looks good. Only time will tell if it does the job!

Very good
A couple of coats on bare wood ,covers well the natural colour on my cabin looks great. Took a couple of days to get it done but looks like it will last

Easy to use
Straight forward water based primer. A couple of coats gives a good foundation for finish coats. Being water based it dries quickly and seals the timber surface from the weather.

Good coverage leaving a gloss finish
Easy to apply and quick drying. Colour was very good with a slight variation on drying. The variation was ideal to see where the second coat was going. Pleased with the outcome.

Great product for refurbishing wooden drive gates
Sanded back my large drive gates to original wood, hoovered off the dust, wiped surfaces clean with methylated spirit, then gave one coat of Sadolin Quick Dry UV Protection Woodstain in Light Oak Colour. Outside temperature was in low 20's Celsius, so first coat was touch dry within the 20mins advertised. Gave the gates a second coat the next day to deepen to the colour I wanted. The product goes on easily by brush but needs to be applied fairly quickly, due to the quick drying time. I'm very pleased with the finish and the gates have been given a new lease of life.

Does what it says on the tin
Arrived quickly, well packaged. Very easy to use, with good colour and coverage. Only time will tell if it lasts ten years but so far it seems good.
