Sadolin Classic Wood Protection absorbs deeply into the timber to provide exceptional protection against weathering. It is ideal as a base stain for other products in the Sadolin range, including Sadolin Extra Durable Woodstain and Sadolin Extra Durable Clearcoat.

Timber surfaces must be suitably prepared, clean, sound and dry. The moisture content should not exceed 18% prior to coating.

Bare Timber

  • Degrease any exposed bare timber surface by wiping with a lint-free cloth dampened with methylated spirits to remove any surface impurities or resinous deposits
  • Knotting agents should not be used with Sadolin woodstain systems
  • Hardwoods such as Teak, Ipe, Meranti and Balau must be thoroughly de-greased with methylated spirits prior to applying Sadolin Classic Wood Protection, as they contain a lot of natural oils
  • Any minor surface defects, imperfections or open joints can be filled with a suitable wood filler prior to coating
  • Only use non-ferrous screws, nails and fixings

New Timber

  • Any timber that has not been previously treated with a wood preservative should be treated with two liberal coats of Sadolin Quick Drying Wood Preserver, paying particular attention to end grains and allowing 24 hours drying time between coats, before over-coating with Sadolin Classic Wood Protection
  • Where possible, the base coat should be applied to all surfaces of the wood prior to fixing in place
  • Please Note: If using this product on decking, be advised that it is only suitable for new decking or decking that has been completely stripped or sanded back to bare wood

Previously Stained Timber

  • Lightly abrade, in the direction of the grain, ensuring not to break through the surface coating, and removing any remaining sanding dust after
  • Where there is localised damage, or deterioration has occurred as a result of exposure of the factory coating for longer than 3 months, affected areas should be thoroughly sanded back to a sound substrate and re-coated
  • If a coloured base stain is required in order to match the existing factory applied coating, use Sadolin Classic Wood Protection in the most appropriate colour before proceeding as described above

Glazing

  • The backs of new glazing beads, end grains and rebates should be brought forward to a finish using the full Sadolin system prior to fixing
  • Joinery to be coated with this product should be glazed using a suitable sealant
  • The use of linseed oil putty or modified, non-setting compounds are not recommended in conjunction with Sadolin Wood Protection systems
  • To confirm compatibility, please consult the manufacturer of the relevant glazing material
  • Silicone glazing materials should only be applied upon completion of the finishing coats

Applying Sadolin Classic Wood Protection

Always do a small test area before starting any project to assess product suitability, adhesion and end result. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times.

Conditions

Do not apply if there is a risk of rain, or when air / substrate temperatures are below 8℃ or above 25℃, or if the relative humidity is above 80% during application or drying periods. Protect from frost and rain until dry. Failure to meet these requirements may adversely affect the drying, visual quality and durability of the finish.

Initial Procedure

Ensure that Sadolin Woodstain is thoroughly stirred before and during application, otherwise sheen and colour variations may be experienced. Sadolin Classic Wood Protection is ready to use from the tin and does not require thinning.

Application

  1. For best results use a good quality, long-haired, soft bristle brush
  2. Apply Sadolin Classic Wood Protection in a full flowing coat, working well into joints and ensuring end grains or sawn timbers are coated to saturation
  3. After 5-10 minutes redistribute the coating by brushing evenly in the direction of the grain
  4. Avoid over spreading Sadolin Classic as this will reduce the long term durability and performance of the coating
  5. To ensure optimum durability and uniformity of appearance, we recommend the use of an overall coat of Sadolin Classic Wood Protection prior to finishing with 2 full coats of Sadolin Extra Durable Woodstain

Maintenance

A lightening in colour, reduction in sheen and a loss of water-repellency is an indication that maintenance is required. For general maintenance, lightly abrade in the direction of the wood grain and clean using warm water and a mild detergent, then rinse thoroughly with clean water. Once dry, a fresh coat of Sadolin Classic Wood Protection can be applied.

If the finish is badly flaking or peeling, to the point where the bare wood is showing through or has started to grey, please follow the full Preparation and Application instructions above.

Works well by J Temple

Had to match a new window frame to other woods in the room. I applied by hand and rubbed in well. It worked well as I got a reasonable match and found that with a couple of coats of wax polish on top I got just the finish I was after.

Great product, used on new shed by Alan W

The Light Oak looks great on my new shed. The T&G pine timber had no treatment, so the sadolin stayed a good light colour after applying, just what I was after. I used a wide brush for applying, so I got the shed covered in no time. The drying time was good too.

A note from us...

Good Afternoon Mr Selwyn,

It would be fair to say that many products drying times will be impacted by the temperature and surrounding environment, in the same way that if it is warm it can speed up the drying time. For further advice feel free to give us a call on 01303 213 838.

Many Thanks Samantha.

Great as always by Alexander Compton

This has always been a good base coat. It lasts for years.

The finished colour is yellow and not anything like Light Oak We are so disapointed with the finish, I feel like finding something to get rid of it and to start again by Mr G Stothard

The web site says to try it before using it on your building. How can you do that, because when the seals are broken, it can't be returned. We followed the instructions to the letter, but each course just made the colour even yellower.

A note from us...

Hello Mr Stothard,

Thank you for sending us your feedback. Its is something that we have spent much time discussing with many of our manufacturers over the years. Sample sizes are so helpful with wood finishing products and over the years many brands have added them to there ranges, including Osmo, Ronseal, Cuprinol and more. We are still working with other manufacturers including Sadolin to encourage sample sizes for the very reasons that you have highlighted.

I hope that you have been able to find a product that suits your needs, if not please do feel free to contact us for further advice and guidance on what you are able to use. You can speak to one of our friendly advisers on 01303 213 838.

Kind regards Samantha.

Good, just tends to thicken up in the tin during use so a little thinners helps it maintain its consistency.

Good product First experience of using it but just followed directions and watched a Sadolin you tube on the product by Hilary Hoye

Good product. Worked well on sills which had to be taken back to bare wood as they had weathered in sun and rain. Frame didn't need the same treatment. Provided a good sound vase on which to put the topcoat.
