Overview

Overview

Back

Specially formulated for use on traditional building materials, Little Greene Limewash offers an authentic decorative solution for exterior walls. This specialist finish is designed to work in harmony with lime plaster, cob, and render, providing a natural look that enhances the historic character of older properties and period homes.

Preparation

Preparation

Back

For best results, ensure all surfaces are sound, clean, and free from dirt, dust, and other contaminants before applying limewash.

  1. Remove any loose or defective limewash, render, or mortar from the surface before painting.
  2. Repair damaged areas by replacing loose render or mortar, and fill cracks or holes with a suitable exterior-grade filler.
  3. Special precautions should be taken when preparing pre-1960s paint surfaces, as they may contain harmful lead. Seek professional advice if required.
  4. Brush down surfaces thoroughly to remove dust, efflorescence, and other loose material. Dampen with clean water to reduce suction before application.
  5. Where fungal or algal growth is present, treat with a suitable fungicidal wash or a 25% household bleach solution, then rinse and allow to dry.
  6. Do not apply over non-porous stone or brickwork such as granite, slate, common Fletton or engineering bricks, or over modern masonry finishes, as limewash is unsuitable for these surfaces.
  7. For new lime plaster, render, or cob surfaces, ensure they are fully cured and free from grease before application.

Application

Application

Back

Always test a small area before starting your project to check product suitability, colour, and final appearance. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times.

Use only in well-ventilated areas and avoid application when rain is forecast or when temperatures fall below 5°C, as limewash is water-sensitive until fully cured.

  1. Stir thoroughly before and during use to fully incorporate any settlement.
  2. Apply using a high-quality synthetic bristle brush. Do not use rollers or spray equipment, as these methods are not suitable for limewash.
  3. Work in even strokes, maintaining a wet edge, and avoid going back over areas that have started to dry.
  4. Apply thin coats only - excessive thickness may result in fine cracking and a weaker coating.
  5. For best results, apply 4 coats, allowing a minimum of 24 hours between coats (or 48 hours in cold or damp conditions).
  6. Colours will lighten considerably within 24 hours of application, giving an authentic, natural finish.

Aftercare

Aftercare

Back

With the right care, limewash will continue to protect and enhance exterior surfaces for many years. Regular maintenance helps preserve both the appearance and performance of the finish.

  1. For light surface soiling, gently hose down walls using clean, low-pressure water.
  2. Keep plants trimmed to maintain airflow around the building and prevent leaf debris from building up against painted surfaces.
  3. Inspect guttering and downpipes regularly to avoid leaks or overflows that may cause constant wetting of the limewash.
  4. For repairs, lightly rub down the affected area and apply a suitable primer to any exposed substrate before repainting "break to break" with additional coats as required.
  5. Note that spot repairs may result in a slight variation in finish compared to the surrounding area.

What is Little Greene Limewash used for?

It is a traditional water-based finish designed for exterior lime plaster, cob, and render, providing a natural matt appearance.

Can I apply limewash to any type of brick or stone?

No, limewash is unsuitable for non-porous materials such as granite, slate, Fletton bricks, and engineering bricks.

How many coats of limewash are required?

For full coverage and best results, apply 4 thin coats, allowing sufficient drying time between each coat.

How long should I wait between coats?

Allow at least 24 hours between coats, or 48 hours in colder or damp conditions, to ensure proper curing.

What finish does limewash provide?

Limewash dries to a soft matt finish, with colours that lighten significantly within 24 hours for an authentic look.

Can limewash be applied with a roller or sprayer?

No, limewash should be applied only with a good quality synthetic bristle brush for the best results.

Is limewash safe to use?

How do I maintain limewash after application?

How should leftover limewash be stored?

Store in a cool, dry, frost-free place, away from sunlight. For best results, use within 14 days of delivery.
