Overview

Overview

Back

Farrow & Ball Estate Emulsion is the brand's original and most recognisable interior paint, formulated to deliver an unmistakably flat, chalky finish. With a 2% sheen, it absorbs light rather than reflecting it, giving walls and ceilings a rich depth of colour that changes subtly throughout the day.

This water-based emulsion is low in odour and VOCs, making it ideal for calm, lived-in spaces such as bedrooms, living rooms and hallways. Although gently wipeable, it is best reserved for areas with lighter use, where its beautifully soft surface can be appreciated without the wear of daily traffic.

For areas of high wear consider using Farrow and Ball Dead Flat.

Preparation

Preparation

Back

Always do a test area first to check colour, adhesion and finish before full application.

  1. Ensure surfaces are sound, clean, dry and free from dust, grease or other contaminants.
  2. Remove any loose or flaking paint and lightly sand to create a smooth surface. Take care when preparing older surfaces, as they may contain lead-based paint.
  3. Repair cracks or holes with a suitable filler, allow to dry, then sand smooth. Where filler porosity differs from the surrounding surface, spot-prime to ensure even absorption.
  4. Clean the area with a dilute Sugar Soap solution and rinse with clean water. Avoid solvent-based or strong alkaline cleaners, as these can affect adhesion.
  5. New or unpainted plaster: Ensure plaster is fully dry (as a guide, 7 days per 5 mm thickness). Apply a mist coat by diluting Estate Emulsion with approximately 25% clean water, followed by two full coats of undiluted paint.
  6. Previously painted surfaces: Lightly abrade sound coatings and remove dust. Apply one coat of the recommended Farrow & Ball Wall & Ceiling Primer & Undercoat in the correct tone for your topcoat, then follow with two full coats of Estate Emulsion.
  7. Lining paper: Prime with a light coat of the recommended primer and undercoat (diluted up to 10% with water if required), then apply two full coats of your chosen colour. Test on a small area first, as dilution may vary depending on paper porosity.

Application

Application

Back

Always make a test area before application to ensure the product's suitability, following the manufacturer's instructions at all times. Stir thoroughly before and during use, and for best results apply Farrow & Ball Estate Emulsion in dry conditions with good ventilation.

Do not apply in temperatures below 10°C or above 30°C, or in high humidity.

  1. Use a high-quality synthetic brush or medium pile Paint Roller for a smooth, even finish. For larger projects, spraying may also be suitable.
  2. Maintain a wet edge at all times to prevent overlapping marks or "picture framing" on this very matt finish.
  3. Work methodically across each wall from top to bottom, maintaining a wet edge and blending sections together for an even appearance.
  4. Apply two full coats of Estate Emulsion, allowing at least 2 hours drying time between coats. Some deeper shades or significant colour changes may require additional coats.
  5. When rolling, work in small sections and finish each coat by lightly laying off in one direction to reduce roller patterning and achieve a consistent appearance.
  6. Clean brushes and rollers immediately after use with warm soapy water. Avoid letting paint dry on tools.

F.A.Q.

F.A.Q.

Back

1) What type of finish is Farrow & Ball Estate Emulsion?
It's a chalky, ultra-matt finish with a 2% sheen level. This creates a beautifully flat look that softens light and hides minor surface imperfections.

2) Where can I use Estate Emulsion?
Ideal for low-traffic interior walls and ceilings such as bedrooms, living rooms and dining areas. It's not recommended for kitchens, bathrooms or busy hallways - use Farrow and Ball Modern Emulsion for those spaces instead.

3) Is Farrow & Ball Estate Emulsion breathable?
Yes. It's rated Class I for breathability (sd - 0.010), allowing moisture vapour to pass through while still providing excellent colour coverage.

4) Is it washable?
No - Estate Emulsion is gently wipeable only. For washable and scrubbable walls, choose Farrow and Ball Dead Flat.

5) How many coats are required?
Apply two full coats for best coverage and depth of colour. Deeper shades or significant colour changes may need an additional coat.

6) Do I need a primer or undercoat?
Yes - on bare, porous, or repaired surfaces, first apply the Farrow & Ball Wall & Ceiling Primer and Undercoat in the appropriate tone for your chosen colour. Using a different primer may affect the final appearance and compromise the brand's signature rich, even, and long-lasting finish.

7) What is the drying and recoat time?
Estate Emulsion is touch-dry in around 2 hours and ready to recoat after approximately 2 hours, depending on temperature and humidity.

8) Can I apply it by spray?
Yes. Estate Emulsion can be sprayed using suitable equipment and minimal dilution. Follow the manufacturer's guidance for best results and maintain good ventilation.

9) Is it eco-friendly?
Yes - it's water-based, low-odour and contains very low VOCs (< 1 g/L). It also holds an A+ indoor-air-quality rating, making it safer for homes and the environment.

Good quality paint
I used a 5 litre tin of this paint in Ammonite to cover pale green walls in my living room. The first coat was very effective at hiding the underlying colour. I could have got away with only one coat as it is very opaque but I had plenty of paint left over for a good second coat as it does go along way. Looks great in natural and artificial light.
