Preparation

Preparation

Back

Farrow & Ball Dead Flat can be applied to various substrates, please refer to the product data sheet for a comprehensive guide to preparation.

Always ensure surfaces are clean, dry and free from dust, grease or any loose material.

  • Remove any flaking or weak paint layers and lightly sand to create a smooth, even base. Take care when preparing older surfaces, as paint applied before the 1960s may contain lead.
  • Fill cracks or holes with a suitable filler, allow to dry thoroughly, then sand smooth. Where filler porosity differs from surrounding areas, spot-prime before painting.
  • Clean the surface using a dilute Sugar Soap solution, then rinse with clean water. Avoid solvent-based or strong alkaline cleaners that could affect paint adhesion.
  • New or unpainted plaster: Ensure plaster is fully dry (around 7 days per 5 mm thickness). Apply a mist coat by diluting Dead Flat with up to 25% clean water, followed by two full coats of undiluted paint.
  • Previously painted surfaces: Lightly abrade sound coatings and remove dust. Apply one coat of the recommended Farrow & Ball Wall & Ceiling Primer & Undercoat in the correct tone for your topcoat, then follow with two full coats of Farrow & Ball Dead Flat.
  • Lining paper: Apply a thin coat of the recommended Farrow & Ball Wall & Ceiling Primer & Undercoat (diluted up to 10% with clean water if needed), then finish with two coats of your chosen colour. Always test first, as dilution may vary depending on the paper's absorbency.

Application

Application

Back

Always make a test area before application to confirm product suitability, following the manufacturer's instructions at all times. Stir thoroughly before and during use, and for best results apply Farrow & Ball Dead Flat in dry conditions with good ventilation.

Do not apply in temperatures below 10°C or above 30°C, or in high humidity.

  1. Use a high-quality synthetic brush or medium pile roller for an even, consistent finish. Spraying can also be used on larger surfaces if suitable equipment is available.
  2. Maintain a wet edge throughout application to prevent overlapping marks or "picture framing," particularly with darker colours and this ultra-matt finish.
  3. Work methodically across each surface from top to bottom, blending sections together to achieve a seamless, uniform appearance.
  4. Apply two full coats of Farrow and Ball Dead Flat, allowing at least 4 hours drying time between coats. Deeper shades or major colour changes may require an additional coat for full coverage.
  5. When rolling, apply in small sections and finish by lightly laying off in one direction to minimise roller patterning and maintain the flat, velvety appearance.
  6. Clean all tools immediately after use with warm soapy water, ensuring no paint residue remains on brushes or rollers.

Aftercare

Aftercare

Back

Farrow & Ball Dead Flat is fully washable and wipeable once cured. Allow the paint to harden for around two weeks before cleaning, and take extra care during this time to avoid marking the surface.

To clean, simply wipe with a soft, damp microfibre cloth or sponge. Always test any cleaning solution on a hidden area first, as some products may leave a mark. Avoid bleach or harsh chemicals. Minor scuffs and everyday marks can usually be removed with gentle wiping, though they may be more noticeable on darker shades. For best results, clean spills promptly to prevent stains from settling into the surface.
