Overview

Overview

Back

Zinsser Gardz is a high performance, durable sealer for porous and problematic surfaces. It penetrates deeply, forming a tough, moisture resistant layer on powdery, chalky and crumbling surfaces, as well as on painted and textured surfaces. Ideal for use on dry wall, plaster, wallpaper adhesive residue, textured walls and ceilings and much more. Milky blue-white in colour when applied, drying to a clear finish.

Preparation

Preparation

Back

To get the best results, ensure surfaces to be coated are sound, clean, dry and free from all defective or poorly adhering material, dirt, grease and dust.

  1. Special precautions should be taken during surface preparation of pre-1960s paint surfaces over wood and metal as they may contain harmful lead
  2. Any residual wallpaper adhesive should be removed using a suitable wallpaper stripper
  3. Cover any stains using Zinsser Cover Stain
  4. Sand any spackled areas or skim coated surfaces using 100 grit sandpaper

Application

Application

Back

Always do a test area before starting any project to assess product suitability and final finish. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times. Does not require thinning.

Only apply at temperatures ranging between 10°C and 32°C and a relative humidity of no more than 85%.

  1. Stir thoroughly before and periodically during use
  2. Apply evenly and consistently, using a good quality synthetic bristle brush with flagged tips, microfibre roller or spray gun
  3. Work from the bottom to the top on vertical surfaces to avoid product from running down the surface
  4. Brush out or back-roll any runs to achieve an even, consistent finish
  5. If using an airless sprayer, use tip size 0.011 - 0.013 at pressure 800 - 1200 psi
  6. A garden sprayer can be used, ensuring the nozzle is set to a fine, and a consistent fan pattern for even coverage
  7. Surface will be touch dry in 30 minutes
  8. Allow 3 hours to fully dry before overcoating with chosen finish

Cleaning Equipment

Clean brushes, rollers and any spillages immediately after use, using warm soapy water.

Can I apply Gardz over a shiny wallpaper then paint?

The Zinsser Wallpaper Cover-Up would be the correct product to use to cover shiny wallpaper but with all things, we recommend a test area to ensure you are happy with the results.

Seeking to seal the hessian on a wall...would Gardz be appropriate? And does it dry matt?

No, this would not be suitable to seal hessian. Please consider the Polyvine Decorators Varnish instead. If you specifically require a matt finish, we recommend applying 2 coats of satin followed by 1 coat of dead flat to achieve the best performance and durability.

Can Gardz be painted over existing tiles?

No, the Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 or Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 Plus would be more suitable over tiles.

Can you use on gloss painted banister?

The Zinsser Gardz is designed to seal surfaces which are problematic. As the banister is painted, it is unlikely to need a coat of Gardz. Why not give our Woodcare Experts a call on 01303 213838 to discuss your options.

I need to paint over some walls I recently whitewashed which now smell awful (days after painting and didn't smell at the time) would Gardz work?

This is not designed to be used as a top coat. It is simply a sealant for interior surfaces to form a durable, protective layer on porous and problematic areas. Instead, you may wish to consider a shellac-based primer and sealer such as Zinsser B-I-N which is designed for sealing in strong odours. This would still need a topcoat but would do a much better job. As you have recently whitewashed the walls, I would just check the preparation guidelines as this will differ depending on which method you used. Why not give our Woodcare Experts a call on 01303 213838 to discuss your options.

Can I use Zinsser Gardz on a kitchen wall where the previous coat of paint has all bubbled?

It would depend as to why it has bubbled. Potentially yes, but without knowing the cause, it is difficult to say for sure. Our Woodcare Experts are on hand to help with this, please give us a call on 01303 213838.

Can I use Zinsser Gardz on lime plaster or distemper?

Lime plaster usually requires a breathable paint such as Earthborn Claypaint. Slightly dampen the surface before application. Claypaint is perfect for old properties in need of breathable paint which allows moisture to move without being trapped.

Distemper walls are quite different and very problematic. Why not call our Woodcare Experts on 01303 213838 to discuss your options.

Would this cover PVA drip marks from plastering so emulsion paint top coat would cover evenly?

Gardz is designed to be used on porous surfaces to form a durable protective sealant on the substrate. Zinsser B-I-N could be better suited to this project with the aid of sanding to smooth the surface.

Great for prep work
Applied with brush and roller, seals really well, any splashes need to be cleaned quickly before it drys as hard to remove once dry. Will use to seal walls and ceiling from now on.

Always a repeat purchase
Zinsser Gardz is a must when preparing old plastered walls prior to decorating. I use it before painting and after removing old wallpaper to seal the walls. I always fill any areas before using the Gardz. It gives a smooth and stable finish and wallpapering over this is so much easier.

So far, so good
Had a damp patch in bathroom. Used this, then emulsioned over it. So far it seems to have done the trick. Fingers crossed it stays this way. I’m very happy with the results so far.

Good as described
The product perfectly fine to glue to the walls all the wallpaper residue just like paper and wallpaper glue I suggest to use any filler before zinsser applied

Excellent sealer
Zinsser Gardz recommended by the manufacturer for plaster wall stained by-previous damp. Drys quickly and easy to apply. No problems.
