Overview

Overview

Back

Zinsser Peel Stop is a quick drying, vinyl resin coating for surfaces prone to flaking, chalking and peeling. It tightly bonds to old paint and problem areas, forming a sound surface for new paint. Working as a bridging primer, it seals surface areas which have been grazed or cracked, preventing the topcoat from cracking. Ideal for wood: window frames, doors and fences, sawn timber, plywood, concrete, metal and so much more.

Preparation

Preparation

Back

For the best results, ensure surfaces to be coated are sound, clean, dry and free from all defective or poorly adhering material such as dirt, grease, wallpaper, mould or adhesives. If needed, clean surface using an appropriate cleaning solution.

  1. Take special precautions during surface preparation of pre-1960s paint surfaces over wood and metal as they may contain harmful lead
  2. Lightly sand glossy paint and exposed wood, removing any loose material
  3. Fill any nail holes and imperfections with a suitable multi-purpose filler and spot prime the area
  4. Spot prime sanded areas or where paint has been scraped using Zinsser B-I-N

Application

Application

Back

Always do a test area before starting any project to check product suitability and effectiveness. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times.

Only apply at temperatures ranging between 10°C and 32°C and a relative humidity of no more than 80%.

  1. Stir or shake thoroughly before use
  2. Apply Zinsser Peel Stop with a good quality synthetic brush, microfibre roller or airless sprayer
  3. Ensure the coating is worked well into all edges and cracks on old paint surfaces
  4. Apply 1 full coat to prepared surfaces, this will dry to a soft sheen. A second coat may be necessary if dull spots appear
  5. Allow 2 hours between coats

Cleaning Equipment

Clean brushes and rollers immediately after use, using warm, soapy water.

Finishing

Finishing

Back

Once fully dry, Zinsser Peel Stop can be primed using Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 or Zinsser Cover Stain and then finished with a suitable water-based or alkyd paint for maximum results.

Would this work in my bathroom where the old paint has started to peel off?

Peel Stop is a clear, flexible, binding primer designed for surfaces that are peeling, chalking, or cracking. Even after painted surfaces have been scraped and sanded, tiny cracks and gaps remain under the edges of old paint. Peel Stop seeps into these spaces and 'glues' them down, forming a tight bond that helps stop future peeling. The special formula of Peel Stop penetrates and binds chalky residues. Applied over cracked or crazed surfaces, Poorly adhered, flaking paint should be thoroughly scraped and sanded to remove loose fragments. Peel Stop acts as a flexible bridging primer to seal face crazing and prevent the finish coat from cracking, providing a sound surface for primer and paint.

Can I use Peel Stop on my floor?

We would not recommend using this on flooring. Why not give our Woodcare Experts a call to discuss your options on 01303 213838.

Can I use Zinsser Peel Stop on timer as a primer?

For this type of project, we would normally recommend using Zinsser B-I-N or Zinsser B-I-N Aqua.

Does what it says…
Well worth applying before primer or top coats, dries quickly and does prevent peeling.
