Overview

Overview

Back

Ronseal Decking Protector is a lightly pigmented, highly water repellent decking treatment that gives wooden decking a more natural looking finish.

Preparation

Preparation

Back

Decked areas to be treated with Ronseal Decking Protector should be clean, dry and free from surface dust, dirt, oil, grease, wax and silicone.

New Decking Preparation

For all bare wood decking including tanalised, pressure treated and preservative impregnated decking timbers.

New Softwood Decking

  1. Sweep the decking boards with a stiff broom to remove all traces of surface dirt and debris
  2. Clean decking with Ronseal Decking Cleaner and Reviver if required
  3. Treat decking with Ronseal Total Wood Preservative for the best protection
  4. If possible, preserve all sides including end grain prior to installation

New Hardwood Decking

Hardwood decking usually requires a period of weathering to allow the surface grain to open up. This allows for better absorption of the decking protector. Check the decking manufacturer's guidance on how long wood decking should be left to weather before treating.

Old Decking Preparation

Old 'coating' type finishes such as decking paints, varnishes and varnish type stains must be fully removed back to bare wood before protecting. Depending on the condition and type of finish, it may require more than one attempt to fully remove the old coating.

  1. Ensure that all 'coating' type finishes have been fully removed to expose bare wood by either jet washing or using Ronseal Decking Stripper
  2. For decking affected by mould, algae or moss, use Ronseal Decking Cleaner and Reviver
  3. To restore the colour of decking that has turned grey or silver over time, treat with Ronseal Decking Restorer or Ronseal Decking Cleaner and Reviver
  4. For the best protection, treat the decking with a suitable exterior wood preservative
  5. If possible, preserve all sides including end grain prior to installation

Application

Application

Back

Always do a test area before starting any project to assess product suitability and final finish. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times.

Do not apply Ronseal Decking Protector in wet conditions or if rain, frost or snow is likely before the product is dry. Stir thoroughly before and periodically during application to achieve a consistent finish.

  1. Apply Decking Protector liberally with a suitable decking applicator
  2. Work the protector into the surface of the wood grain
  3. Allow the first coat to dry in line with environmental conditions
  4. Apply a second coat as above, within 90 minutes of applying the first coat
  5. Allow 24 hours to dry completely before subjecting the decking to foot traffic

Regular Cleaning

To preserve the look and performance of wooden deck finishes for longer, it is recommended that decked areas are swept with a stiff broom on a regular basis. This is to remove loose leaves, dirt and other organic matter that can settle on the wood and in the grooves, which can degrade or damage the finish over time.

If signs of mould or algae appear, use an appropriate decking cleaner. Do not use household cleaners or detergents as these can degrade, damage, or strip the decking finish over time.

Deep Cleaning

Scuff marks, stains, grease and other surface contaminates can normally be cleaned with a suitable decking cleaner. Stubborn marks and stains may require a light sanding and a thin application of Ronseal Decking Protector to restore.

Maintenance

The condition of wooden decking should be inspected on a regular basis and re-treated as required.

Repair

High foot traffic areas that start to appear worn or tired, or that are losing the ability to repel water effectively can be easily restored. First clean with a suitable decking cleaner then re-apply a thin coat of Ronseal Decking Protector to the affected area for an invisible repair.
