Zinsser Cover Stain

Zinsser Cover Stain is a quick drying coating for stains caused by fire smoke, water, and nicotine, on interior and exterior surfaces. Ideal for use on interior ceilings, walls, doors, and furniture, and on exterior walls, doors, fascia's, soffits, and railings.

Please Note: When blocking stains caused by water or damp, make sure the original cause of the problem has been rectified.

For the best results, ensure surfaces to be coated are sound, clean, dry and free from all defective or poorly adhering material such as dirt, grease, paint or adhesives. If needed, clean surface using an appropriate ammoniated cleaning solution. Never use tri sodium phosphate based cleaners.

1. Take special precautions during surface preparation of pre-1960s paint surfaces over wood and metal as they may contain harmful lead
2. Sand all edges of remaining coating until smooth
3. Using an 80 - 100 grit sandpaper, lightly sand exterior timber to remove loose or weathered wood fibres and mill glaze
4. Clean as much of the existing stain as possible, prior to priming
5. Remove and treat any mould and mildew on interior surfaces using Zinsser Mould Killer and Remover
6. Fill any nail holes and imperfections with a suitable multi-purpose filler and spot prime the area
7. Spot prime any knots and resin streaks using Zinsser B-I-N
8. All areas of rust should be cleaned using a wire brush

Always do a test area before starting any project to check product suitability and effectiveness. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times.

Only apply at temperatures ranging between 5°C and 32°C and a relative humidity of no more than 85%.

1. Stir thoroughly before and periodically during use
2. Apply Zinsser Cover Stain with a good quality natural or synthetic brush, microfibre roller, applicator pad or spray gun (Use tip size 0.15 - 0.17 at pressure 1800 - 2200 psi)
3. Apply 1 full coat to prepared surfaces. A second coat on very porous surfaces may be necessary
4. Allow 2 hours between coats
5. Fully cured in 4 - 7 days

Clean brushes and rollers immediately after use, using white spirit. For dried on primer use Zinsser B-I-N Brush Cleaner and Restorer

It is best practice to remove all traces of mould and mildew as this can continue to grow and push the coatings off and/or the staining can begin growing through. Take a look at Zinsser Mould Killer and Remover to help eradicate the issue before overcoating with anything.

No, the Zinsser Cover Stain is a solvent-based primer and sealer.

We recommend priming the whole area with water damage. Stir before using and try and clean the surface very well before using for the best chance of adhesion.

Once fully dried, Cover Stain can be applied over the top of Zinsser Peel Stop to prime and seal flaking, chalking and peeling surfaces.

Yes, the Zinsser Cover Stain is designed for the effective treatment of a variety of stains including fire and smoke damages. We would recommend cleaning the areas affected using a wire brush before use application and after, using a suitable top- coat to offer the surface durability and resistance.

It would depend as to what is on the timber at the moment. Cover Stain could be suitable for this project, and it will take both water-based and solvent-based topcoats. For bare wood, we recommend applying Zinsser B-I-N instead as this helps to seal knots and provides a nice base without any bleed through from tannins. The Zinsser Cover Stain is a solvent-based stain blocking primer and sealer with excellent opacity and covering properties. It does not have any active ingredients to prevent mould growth. For best results, we would suggest using a dedicated mould and mildew cleaner to eradicate the problem before use of the Zinsser Cover Stain.
