Overview

Overview

Back

Sadolin Extra Durable Woodstain is perfect for a wide range of exterior wood projects including windows, doors and more. It is the perfect partner for wood that has been base-stained with Sadolin Classic Wood Protection.

Please Note: This product is not suitable for flooring or decking. For decking, see Sadolin Decking Oil or Sadolin Classic Wood Protection.

Preparation

Preparation

Back

Timber surfaces must be clean, dry and structurally sound. The moisture content of the wood should not exceed 18% prior to coating with Sadolin Woodstain.

It is recommended that all bare wood, new or recently stripped, is first treated with Sadolin Quick Drying Wood Preserver and then base stained with Sadolin Classic Wood Protection.

Old or Previously Treated Timber

  • All previous coatings and finishes must be removed by sanding to expose clean, sound, bare wood
  • All traces of surface dirt and debris, including mould, algae and fungi, must be removed prior to application with a suitable exterior wood cleaner
  • Resinous deposits should be removed with a scraper
  • Degrease any exposed bare timber surface by wiping with a cloth dampened with methylated spirits
  • Dense exotic hardwoods tend to contain a lot of natural oil. Hardwoods such as Teak, Ipe, Meranti and Balau must be thoroughly de-greased with methylated spirits prior to applying Sadolin Extra Durable Woodstain
  • Knotting agents should not be used with Sadolin Woodstain systems
  • Wood fillers specifically designed for use with exterior timber should be used for making good any minor surface defects, imperfections and open joints etc
  • Only use non-ferrous screws, nails and fixings

New Timber

  • Timber that hasn't been pre-treated with a wood preservative should be treated with two liberal coats of clear Sadolin Quick Drying Wood Preserver, paying particular attention to end grains
  • Allow 24 hours drying time between coats and before over-coating with 1 full coat of Sadolin Classic Wood Protection
  • Where possible, the wood preservative and base coat should be applied to all parts of the timber prior to fixing
  • For optimum durability, the use of Sadolin Classic Wood Protection as a base coat is recommended, particularly when treating hardwoods

Previously Stained Timber

  • Lightly abrade, in the direction of the grain, ensuring not to break through the surface coating, and removing any remaining sanding dust afterwards
  • Where there is localised damage, or deterioration has occurred as a result of exposure of the factory coating for longer than 3 months, affected areas should be thoroughly sanded back to a sound substrate and re-coated

Glazing

  • The backs of new glazing beads, end grains and rebates should be brought to a finish with Extra Durable Woodstain prior to fixing
  • Joinery to be coated should be glazed using a suitable sealant
  • The use of linseed oil putty or modified, non-setting compounds are not recommended in conjunction with Sadolin wood protection systems
  • To confirm compatibility, please consult the manufacturer of the relevant glazing material
  • Silicone glazing materials should only be applied upon completion of the finishing coats

Application

Application

Back

Always do a test area before starting any project to assess product suitability and final finish. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times.

Do not apply Sadolin Woodstain if there is a risk of rain, or when air / substrate temperatures are below 8°C or above 25°C, or if the relative humidity is above 80% during application or drying periods. Protect from frost and rain until dry. Failure to meet these requirements may adversely affect the drying, visual quality and durability of the finish.

Ensure product is thoroughly stirred before and during application, otherwise sheen and colour variations may be experienced. Sadolin Extra Durable Woodstain is supplied ready for use. Do not thin.

  1. Apply the wood stain in a full flowing coat using a good quality synthetic bristle brush
  2. Pay special attention to end grain, tops and bottoms of doors, and undersides of window sills
  3. Finish with two full coats of wood stain allowing a minimum of 16-24 hours drying between coats

Finishing

Finishing

Back

Once dry, this product can be over-coated with Sadolin Extra Durable Clearcoat for extra durability.

Maintenance

A lightening in colour, reduction in sheen and a loss of water-repellency is an indication that maintenance is required. For general maintenance, lightly abrade in the direction of the wood grain and clean using warm water and a mild detergent, then rinse thoroughly with clean water. Once dry, a fresh coat of Sadolin Extra Durable Woodstain can be applied.

If the finish is badly flaking or peeling to the point where the bare wood is showing through or has started to grey, please follow the full Preparation and Application instructions above.

Can Sadolin Extra Durable Woodstain be used on decking?

Sadolin recommend that Extra Durable Woodstain is not used on decking due to its high surface build and shiny finish. This product is likely to wear quicker than a dedicated decking stain or oil and could pose a slip hazard. Sadolin products are better suited to wooden joinery such as window frames, doors and other vertical surfaces. This said, Sadolin Classic Wood Protection is a wood stain and protector and can be used on decking. It is available in the same colour ranges as their 'Extra Durable' product range.

What sheen is the Sadolin Extra Durable Woodstain?

This is a satin sheen but on less absorbent/dense timber a higher sheen may be apparent.

If I decide on a colour in Classic, can I choose a different colour in the Extra Durable if I do not like it?

Absolutely. As a translucent product, the colour will perhaps be a cross between the two shades but can be built up as you apply more coats over time. It is always easier to go darker than it is to go lighter due to the contrast. We recommend doing a test area to assess the final results.

Can Sadolin Extra be used over water-based Cuprinol

It would depend which product this would be as not all are compatible. There are a few water-based Cuprinol products on the market. For best results, this product should be applied over Sadolin Classic Wood Protection. Please call us on 01303 213838 to discuss your options.

What can I use as a topcoat over Sadolin Extra Durable Woodstain?

You don't necessarily need a topcoat on this, depending on how it's used. If you are worried about the durability, once dry, this product can be over-coated with Sadolin Extra Durable Clearcoat

Can Sadolin Extra Durable be used inside?

Often, exterior products have great flexibility and movement to allow for the constant expansion and contraction of timber but they don't tend to cope as well with general wear and tear making them a better fit for exterior timber. Sadolin Classic Wood Protection is much better suited for both inside and outside the home.

Can Sadolin Extra be sprayed?

Sadolin do not recommend spraying this product. Instead consider a good quality brush specifically designed for holding this type of solvent based product such as ProDec Trade Pro Bristle Blend Brush.

Will this Sadolin Extra Durable Woodstain work without complete removal of the previous treatment?

Ideally, this product should be applied over the top of the Sadolin Classic Wood Protection or used as a maintenance coating over itself. Where there is damage, or exposed deterioration, the affected areas should be thoroughly sanded back to bare wood and re-coated as before.

Good stain in handy size
I have used Sadolin woodstain for external surfaces before, and was keen to match it. It lasts a long time. My local merchants either sold different brands or did not have Sadolin in this size tin.

I have used Sadolin for several years for the timbers on our house which is south facing and is subject to several hours of sunshine daily. It is by far the best protection on the market.

Topping up staining of my garage door
Ran out of my preferred wood stain I have been using for 30 plus years on my door. Googled where to get it. Saw it was Wood Finishes Direct. Used them before. Good service. prompt and affordable. Happy to use them again.
