Overview

Manns Trade Shellac Sanding Sealer is perfect as a stand alone Shellac sealer or as a basecoat for French Polish and other waxes. Suitable for a wide range of applications prior to finishing, its appearance is creamy in the container but dries clear on the surface.

Please Note: This product should not be used in high quality polishing operations, as the sanding agent in this Shellac wood finish can affect the adhesion and clarity of the final film.

Preparation

Preparation

Back

Ensure that the surface to be sealed is clean, dry and free from dirt, dust, grease or any other surface contaminants. Proper preparation is essential to achieve maximum adhesion and a smooth, even finish.

  1. Surfaces should be untreated, bare wood. Any existing paints, varnishes, waxes or previous finishes must be completely removed by thorough sanding or with a dedicated wood stripper.
  2. Sand the surface evenly in the direction of the wood grain using a suitable abrasive to create a smooth, level base. Remove all sanding dust carefully using a vacuum or lint-free cloth.
  3. Fill any larger gaps, cracks or surface imperfections with a suitable wood filler and allow it to fully dry before sanding smooth.
  4. Ensure the timber is fully dry before application. Do not apply to damp wood, as this can affect adhesion and final finish quality.
  5. Before full application, test the product on a small, inconspicuous area to confirm compatibility and the desired appearance.

Softwood surfaces can be stained prior to sealing with Manns Classic Pine Stain or Manns Classic Oak Stain for Oak and other hardwoods. If a solvent-based stain is preferred, use Manns Trade Light Fast Wood Stain.

Application

Application

Back

Always do a test area before starting any project to assess product suitability and final finish. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the container at all times. Shake well before use. This product can be thinned down with methylated spirits if required to achieve the desired consistency.

  1. Ensure the surface is clean, dry and free from dust, grease and any previous finishes that may affect adhesion. Lightly sand if required and remove all sanding dust before application.
  2. Apply the sanding sealer with a good quality bristle blend brush, working in the direction of the wood grain and covering roughly half a square metre at a time. For larger, flat areas, a short pile microfibre roller can be used to achieve quick, even coverage.
  3. Apply thin, even coats and avoid overworking the product, as shellac dries rapidly. Do not apply excessively thick coats.
  4. Allow approximately 30 minutes drying time between coats under normal conditions.
  5. De-nib (lightly sand) between coats using a fine abrasive to remove any raised grain, then remove all dust before applying further coats or the chosen topcoat.

Excellent Gives a very satisfying result
I've been using shellac sanding sealer for many years as a base for wax finishes and melamine spray. It provides a perfectly smooth surface when lightly sanded with a fine finishing paper. Very easy to use and dries very quickly so you don't have to wait long before applying your next coat, whatever that is to be.
