Preparation

Preparation

Back

Ensure that surfaces to be treated are clean, dry and free of any dust, dirt or other surface contaminants.

  1. All previous finishes must be completely removed and surfaces sanded back to bare wood before application
  2. It is recommended that new, bare wood is wiped down with methylated spirit to clean and degrease
  3. Fill any gaps or splits in the wood surface with Manns Trade Mix and Fill or other suitable wood filler
  4. Prior to varnishing, softwood surfaces can be stained with Manns Classic Pine Stain whilst hardwood surfaces can be stained with Manns Classic Oak Stain. If a solvent-based stain is preffered, use Manns Trade Light Fast Wood Stain

Manns Wood Primers

Foor improved adhesion and durability, surfaces to be lacquered can be primed with one of the following Manns wood primers:

Product Use
Manns Extra Tough Primer A water-based, multi-purpose primer, suitable for all bare, solid and engineered wood
Manns Trade Intense Primer An intense primer for use with Manns interior wood varnishes and lacquers. Ideal for exotic hardwoods and other oily or resinous wood types

Applying Manns Trade Extra Tough Pro Lacquer

Always do a test area before starting any project to assess product suitability and final finish. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the container at all times.

Catalyst Mixing Guidelines

Manns Trade Extra Tough Pro Lacquer comes supplied with enough catalyst / hardener for the 5 litres of lacquer. If part mixing, use 9 parts lacquer to 1 part catalyst.

Another approach for part mixing is to measure the height of the fluid in both the lacquer and hardener containers and mark off at an increment of 25% with a marker pen. Then it's easy to mix just a quarter, half or three quarters of the lacquer as required.

Application

  1. Apply Manns Extra Tough Pro Lacquer with a synthetic bristle brush, microfibre roller or floor applicator, in the direction of the wood grain
  2. This product can be spray applied with most spray systems. Avoid heavy coats to prevent the finish 'orange peeling'
  3. When applying over a water-based stain, it is advisable to use a minimum of brush strokes to avoid dislodging the the stain on the first coat
  4. Once the first coat is dry, subsequent coats can be applied until the required level of protection is achieved
  5. Make sure to de-nib (lightly sand) the wood surface between coats
  6. Take care to remove all traces of sanding dust before the next coat and only when the previous coat has fully dried

Please note: Once the catalyst has been mixed with the lacquer, it has a usable open time of around 4 hours. It is recommended that only the amount required for each coat is mixed at any time to avoid product wastage.

Cleaning Equipment

Application brushes and other equipment should be cleaned immediately after use with warm, soapy water and wiped dry with a clean, dry cloth.

Aftercare

Regular Cleaning

Once dry, Manns Extra Tough Pro Lacquer can be cleaned on a daily basis with a soft, dry microfibre or cotton cloth. These can be dampened to remove stubborn marks or scuffs.

Deep Cleaning

For more stubborn marks or for periodic cleaning, use a dedicated, pH balanced wood cleaner such as Woodleys Wood Surface Cleaner. Wooden surfaces should never be saturated with water or cleaned with household detergents or cleaners as these can degrade the finish over time.

Back

How long does Manns Trade Extra Tough Pro Lacquer keep once the catalyst is mixed? Can it be kept in an air tight container between coats?

After the catalyst has been blended with the lacquer, it remains usable for approximately 3-4 hours. It is advisable to mix only the necessary quantity for each coat to minimize product wastage.

Can this be applied over a sanding sealer & can it be rubbed down & polished to obtain a smooth high gloss finish?

There are many different Sanding Sealers on the market so providing the sanding sealer is suitable for a topcoat of varnish/lacquer then yes. Please note that this product has good self-levellers and defoaming agents, for this reason it doesn't require sanding sealer.

Fantastic…
Had a new kitchen fitted a couple of years ago, wood worktop and around the sink, I was told it wouldn't need treating… 18 months down the line and the wood has started lifting, after a lot of research I decided to go with this product and glad I did, it’s amazing and I now have a worktop I’m not scared of getting wet, this stuff goes a long way so make sure you mix enough for the job or use it all in one go, you won’t regret it.

Quality finish
Can take a liitle bit of experimentation to get the best results. I used it on a large MCM rosewood table. It was first sealed with sealing shellac then sanded. The product when applied goes off pretty quickly so I eventually used a 5% hardener mix as opposed to 10%. It s probably more suited to a spray application. I used a fine lint free cloth going in the direction of the grain as opposed to a brush that will most likely leave fine tramlines. The result is super. If you get it wrong just sand back and reaaply; a liitle goes a very long way

Smooth finish on Valcromat kitchen doors
I applied this over the top of OSMO matt wood oil to maintain the look of the valcromat kitchen doors. Seems to have bonded well and provided a resilient finish. It's in a holiday let. Spraying causes a slightly thick finish, but smoother than applying with a foam roller.
