Preparation

Preparation

Back

For the best results, ensure surfaces to be primed are clean, dry (new surfaces particularly must be fully dry) and free of dirt, grease or wax before treating. Take extra care during surface preparation of pre-1960s painted surfaces as they may contain harmful lead.

Previously Painted or Varnished Wood

  1. Clean off any wax polish, grease or finger marks with methylated spirit or a dedicated wax and polish remover
  2. Remove all defective or poorly adhering paint or varnish
  3. Rub down thoroughly along the grain of the wood to provide a 'key'
  4. Use 'wet' methods where possible
  5. Wipe off with a damp, lint-free cloth to remove all sanding dust

New or Bare Wood

  1. Any surface defects should be filled with an appropriate wood filler
  2. New or bare surfaces must be rubbed down with a suitable grade of abrasive paper
  3. Remove all traces of sanding dust with a damp, lint-free cloth or vacuum cleaner
  4. If required, clean and de-grease the surface by wiping over with white spirit
  5. Treat any knots in wood with an appropriate knotting solution

Application

Application

Back

Always do a test area before starting any project to assess product suitability and compatibility of the finish. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times. Only apply in temperatures above 10°C and when rain is not expected. Stir thoroughly before use.

  1. This product can be applied by natural bristle brush, microfibre roller and airless or conventional spray systems
  2. Apply 2 coats allowing 2-4 hours between coats
  3. For previously painted surfaces, just apply 1 even coat and allow to fully dry

Thinning

  • Sealing new or bare surfaces: Add up to 1 part clean water to 5 parts paint
  • Normal use (not to be exceeded): Add up to 1 part clean water to 10 parts paint
  • Conventional spray application: Add up to 1 part clean water to 2.5 parts paint
  • Airless spray application: Add up to 1 part clean water to 5 parts paint

Spray Recommendations

  • Conventional Spray: Satisfactory through most equipment
  • Airless Spray: A typical set up for airless spray application would be a minimum working pressure on paint of 133 bars (2000 lb/sq in) with a spray tip size of 0.43mm (17 thou) and a spray tip angle of 60 degrees
