Overview

Overview

Back

Bona White Primer is a professional, water-based polyurethane/acrylate, tinted primer for wooden floors. It's best use is to create a scandinavian-style 'white-washed' effect on wooden flooring. Intensity of final white finish will increase with the number of coats.

Looking for a standard finish or an alternative primer? Consider one of the following Bona wood primers:

Product Use
Bona Classic Primer A trade quality water-borne wood primer for use on all wood floors
Bona Natural Primer A wood floor primer designed to preserve the look of raw, untreated wood
Bona Intense Primer A high viscosity, single component, 100% polyurethane primer for wooden floors
Bona Amber Primer A water-borne wood primer that produces a rich amber effect on wood flooring

Preparation

Preparation

Back

Ensure floor is acclimatised to its end-use environment prior to priming. The surface to be treated must be sanded back to bare wood, dry and free from any sanding dust, oil, wax or other surface contaminants.

Please note: The overall finish will depend on the species of wood used, due to the natural tannings which can affect the colour. If unsure or seeking a specific look, always test to ensure satisfactory colouration prior to use.

Application

Application

Back

Always do a test area before starting any project to asses product suitability and finish. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the container at all times.

Allow the product to reach room temperature. Optimal application conditions are between 18-25°C and 30-60% relative air humidity. High or low temperatures and/or humidity can lengthen or shorten drying times. Minimum temperature for use is 13°C.

  1. Shake container thoroughly before use and insert the supplied filter
  2. It is recommended to pour through an external strainer so as to ensure that the product is completely homogenous
  3. Apply using a microfiber roller, avoiding build up
  4. Start the application by stroking the roller along the room's edge, going wall to wall, along the grain of the wood
  5. Use a brush to reach all the way out to the edge
  6. Smooth the brush application with the roller
  7. Stroke once again with the roller, wall to wall, but leave a small space between the previous roller strokes
  8. Close and smooth out the gap on your return
  9. Repeat in the same manner until the entire floor has been treated
  10. Allow to dry for approx. 2-3 hours and then lightly sand or denib using a sanding screen (grit 150 or finer) or the Bona Scrad system to reduce grain raise
  11. Remove any sanding dust
  12. If a more intense white look is desired, then apply an additional layer of Bona White Primer - the more coats applied, the more whitening is achieved

The level of whiteness will depend upon the number of coats applied. The more coats of Bona White, the whiter the appearance. It is not recommended to apply more than two full coats per day due to risk of excessive wood swelling.

Please Note: Bona White is primarily intended for strip and plank floors laid in falling lengths. The risk of visible application marks increases if applying diagonally or across the grain of the wood. Additional care is needed if such floors are undertaken.

Finishing

Finishing

Back

This product is not a standalone product and must be overcoated. To achieve the true white, scandinavian-style colour, overcoat with Bona Traffic HD or Bona Traffic HD Anti Slip only.

Overcoating with Bona Mega Varnish or Bona Mega Natural is not recommended if you are looking to achieve a true white look. As these are linseed oil based, when they are applied over Bona White Primer the white will turn to a more creamy white.

It was easy to use which was great
This primer was exactly what I needed before vanishing the floor to stop it going an orange colour

Excellent product
I was recommended to choose this product by the Wood Finishes Direct Customer Services team in conjunction with the Bona Traffic HD. The oak boards previously had some weird dark dirty looking finish which I hated. So I wanted the sanding to get rid of that but it didn't entirely unfortunately. But 4 coats of the Bona White Primer produced the somewhat bleached out whitewashed look I'd hoped for. I am very happy with the look of the floor and I really hope it holds out for a few years.

Takes the orange out of old flooring
Applied 2 coats before finishing with Traffic HD Matt. Takes out any orange tinge ( after sanding) and hopefully ensures it doesn’t return over time. Super easy to apply with roller on a pole

Excellent product
This goes on really easily and looks beautiful. My only criticism is that you have to buy such an enormous bottle!! I have about 4 litres left!

Perfect natural light wood colouring
Actually doesn’t come out really white, but have a perfect really light wood natural colour, which is exactly what we wanted.

Raw wood look on pale oak
One coat keeps the paleness but does not make it look bleached. Very happy with the result. Highly recommend.
