Overview

Overview

Back

Blanchon Hard Waxoil is a solvent-based, clear hard wax oil for wooden flooring, worktops, furniture, panelling and any other interior solid wood, plywood and cork. It penetrates into the surface to provide long-lasting protection, whilst preserving the wood's natural beauty and elasticity.

Please note: The 'Natural' version of this product produces a 'satin-matt' finish meaning that it has minimal sheen when light reflects off the surface.

Preparation

Preparation

Back

Ensure that surfaces to be treated are clean, dry and free from any dust, dirt or other surface contaminants. In general, there should be less than 10% moisture content.

Old Timber

  1. Sand old wood flooring back to bare wood with 24 or 36 grit paper, then with a 50 or 60 grit and finish with a 100 to 120 grit
  2. Then treat as new timber

New Timber

  1. Sand back new or bare wood with 120 grit paper
  2. Carefully vacuum the area to remove all traces of sanding dust
  3. Any oil or resin that exudes from exotic woods should be removed with methylated spirit or cellulose thinners

To stain wooden floors and other interior wooden surfaces prior to oiling, consider Blanchon Wood-Ageing Agent, or an alternative water-based / solvent-based wood stain or dye.

Application

Application

Back

Always do a test area before starting any project to assess product suitability and final finish. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the container at all times. Hard Waxoil is ready to use and does not require diluting or mixing. Shake well before use.

Do not apply to the wood floor if the temperature is lower than 12°C or if the relative humidity is higher than 85%. Never use on wood where the moisture content is higher than 10%. Use only in well ventilated areas. Keep any aquariums and plants away from the environment where the product is being applied.

  1. Apply the Hard Wax Oil thinly with a natural bristle brush or short-haired roller, in the direction of the wood grain
  2. Wipe very regularly as you apply with a clean lint-free cotton cloth (in a circular movement), a buffing machine fitted with a soft beige or white pad, or a polishing machine fitted with soft brushes
  3. To make buffing easier, only work on one small area at a time
  4. Allow 8 - 12 hours drying time before applying the second coat in the same way as the first

The finished area can be subjected to light use 8 - 12 hours after the final coat and fully utilised 2 - 4 days after applying the final coat. It takes 8 to 10 days to fully cure. However, the following precautions should be taken in the first few days of use:

  • Do not cover (use protective sheets) or lay rugs onto the area
  • Remove dust with a vacuum cleaner, brush or cloth (do not use impregnated fabrics)
  • Do not move heavy furniture around
  • Immediately wipe up any water or other liquid spillages and take particular care with flower pots
  • Subsequently, appropriate protective measures (i.e. felt pads) should be taken for table and chair legs or other objects which could mark the floor
  • If applicable, a quality doormat at the entrance will be of benefit
  • A wood floor needs the right environment and a room temperature of 19 - 21°C and 50% - 65% relative air humidity are ideal

Please Note: On previously stained wood, the traffic on the floor will determine how the shade evolves over time. Wood floor maintenance should be carried out regularly and thoroughly to ensure long lasting protection and decoration.

Regular Cleaning

Remove dust regularly using a dry microfibre mop or vacuum cleaner. Stains and marks can be easily removed with a dedicated floor cleaner and a damp floor mop or cloth. Never soak wooden floors with water.

Deep Cleaning

  1. Wipe wood floors with a damp mop or lint-free cloth using diluted Blanchon Natural Soap or Blanchon Lagoon Cleaner, for frequent cleaning
  2. Work on one area at a time, rinsing the microfibre mop or cloth regularly. It should always be well wrung out to avoid getting the wood floor too wet

This should be carried out from once a week on light traffic floors or more frequently for heavy traffic areas.

Maintenance

Maintenance should be carried out when the Hard Wax Oil finish begins to look tired or worn. On high traffic wood floors, regular maintenance may be boosted by applying a thin coat of Blanchon Maintenance Oil or Blanchon Universal Maintenance Oil and buffed if required, either by hand or with a floor buffing machine.

Allow 15 days before the first maintenance treatment to allow Blanchon Hard Waxoil to fully cure. The polished area should be fully use-able in 4 - 8 hours.

Repair

For small areas with specific damage (cigarette burns, impact damage etc.) lightly sand with 120 grit sandpaper to remove the damage and then re-apply Blanchon Hard Wax Oil.

For larger areas or wood floors that have not been maintained as frequently as their use requires, a general sanding can be done using a buffing machine fitted with a sanding disc (about 120 grit) before applying a coat of undiluted Hard Waxoil. Polish by hand or with a buffing machine.

Great product
Very liquid and easy to apply. Initially looks like it changes the paint colour slightly but don't worry, when it dries there is no difference. Seals paint well and clear in colour. I used it on a hand painted mural and painted flooring. Nice dead matt finish on matt emulsion. No sheen at all. Exactly what I wanted and no other product as good. I have been hand painting murals for 35 years. Leave a generous drying time between coats for best results. Only comment is that the smell of oil lasted a week or so.

Best hard wax oil hands down
I use this product every week, when I finish oak cabinetry for clients. I wipe it on with an old piece of cloth. It dries pretty quickly to a beautiful honey colour. Zero to no odour. I've used loads of hard wax oils including osmo, fiddes, liberon and others. This hard wax oil is hands down the best.

Great finish, economical
I used Blanchon Hard Wax Oil to restore a sunbleached oak floor in a conservatory, the room is 6 metres x 3 metres, I applied 3 coats of the oil with a cloth pad and only used half of the tin - I was very surprised how economical the oil was and it dried with a great finish

Blanchon Hard Wax oil has worked really well on our wooden engineered floor
This product has brought our dried and faded oak floor back to life. I am really pleased that I tried this product, and I would use again. I can’t review its longevity as I have only had it on the door for a few weeks, but so far it is holding up really well.
