Overview

Overview

Back

Fiddes Hard Wax Oil Tints offers a hard-wearing, oil-based wood stain finish that dries to a soft satin sheen. Formulated from a blend of natural vegetable oils and waxes. Perfect for most interior wooden surfaces, including floors, doors, skirting boards, furniture and more. Child and food safe when dry, this product is ideal for food preparation surfaces and children's toys.

Preparation

Preparation

Back

Ensure that wooden surfaces, especially floors, have been sanded and prepared with care. Poor preparation and / or sanding technique may result in a poor finish. Surfaces must be clean and dry, removing all traces of dust and dirt before application (maximum moisture content 20 %). Only apply on frost-free surfaces. For guaranteed performance it is always recommended to remove all traces of previous finishes.

  • Existing oiled surfaces can be prepared by either lightly sanding or wiping down with a clean, colourless cloth dampened with methylated or white spirit
  • Existing varnish and sealers must be fully removed via sanding or with a suitable paint or varnish remover
  • Fill in any holes or gaps in wooden floors with Fiddes Floor Repair Kit or another suitable wood filler
  • If sanding, ensure that all traces of sanding dust have been removed with a vacuum cleaner or damp cloth
  • To protect against mould and blue stain in moist surroundings, pre-treat with a suitable interior wood preservative

Application

Application

Back

General Application

Always do a test area before starting any project to assess product suitability and final finish. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times. Before opening the 5ml sample sachets, squeeze the packet several times to ensure that the oil and pigments inside are thoroughly mixed.

Fiddes Hard Wax Oil Tints is ready-to-use from the tin, do not thin. Stir thoroughly before and periodically during application. Fiddes Hard Wax Oils dry via oxidation so it is important to ensure good ventilation during application and drying.

Application to Wood floors

The ideal application tool is a firm, fine, natural bristle brush, however the key to a great finish is thin application with removal of any surplus with a clean, lint free cloth.

  1. Apply first coat thinly and evenly along the wood grain
  2. Remove surplus oil with a clean, lint-free-cloth and allow to dry (4 hours)
  3. Lightly de-nib (lightly sand) the surface, then vacuum to remove all traces of dust
  4. Repeat above steps for second coat

Application to Cork floors

Cork tiles are best treated before fitting to avoid overlapping treatment of edges which would lead to prolonged drying times. A cork floor treated with Fiddes Hard Wax Oil Tints will get a robust, elastic and wear-resistant surface which will harden further over several weeks. Due to the extreme absorption power of this highly elastic, natural, material we recommend the following procedure:

  1. Apply first coat very thinly with a broad varnish scraper, or for smaller areas a natural bristle brush
  2. The Hard Wax Oil should immediately absorb into the surface
  3. Leave to dry for at least 24 hours
  4. Apply second coat, again very thinly
  5. Remove excess with cloth immediately
  6. Leave to dry for at least 24 hours

Finishing

Finishing

Back

Fiddes Hard Wax Oil Tints can be intermixed to produce unique colours. For a more translucent finish add the Clear version of the Hard Wax Oil. Here are some tips for achieving different effects:

  • For lighter a shaded finish: Apply a single coat of Hard Wax Oil Tints then finish with a clear coat of Fiddes Hard Wax Oil, or if you have used the white tint, use Fiddes Hard Wax Oil Natural to stop the white from yellowing
  • For increased colour depth: Apply two coats of Hard Wax Oil Tints
  • To change the sheen from a satin finish: Apply Matt or Gloss from the Clear Hard Wax Oil range to create the desired level

Regular Cleaning

For day to day cleaning, surfaces treated with Fiddes Hard Wax Oil Tints can be dry wiped, swept or vacuumed.

Deep Cleaning

To clean surface scuffs, marks and stains, use Fiddes Floor Surface Cleaner and a damp (not wet) microfibre cloth or mop.

Please Note: Although Fiddes Cleaner is named 'Floor Surface Cleaner' it can be used on any surface treated with Fiddes Hard Wax Oil, including floors, furniture, table tops and kitchen worktops.

Alternatively, Fiddes Wood Surface Cleaner Spray can be used on these other surfaces.

Oiled or waxed floors and surfaces should never be cleaned with a steam cleaner or steam mop as they can degrade or strip the finish and damage the wood.

Repair

Scuffs, stains, marks and minor scratches can be quickly and easily repaired.

  • Minor Blemishes can usually be removed by buffing with a dry or damp microfibre cloth
  • Light damage such as stains can be easily repaired by lightly sanding and re-applying a fresh coat of Hardwax Oil
  • Heavy damage including scratches can be easily 'repaired' by sanding the affected area, back to the bare wood if necessary and re-applying a fresh coat of the Hardwax Oil

Lovely product, takes a bit of practice first time use
Haven’t used hard wax before. Definitely do a trial sample with the small pouches available. Mine was white finish and I chose this over Osma as for me the white was a deeper cover. Very easy to apply, but definitely follow the instructions and very helpful videos on WFD website. Don’t skip the wipe off stage with lint free cloth as I mistakenly did to begin with! For me (capable DIY’er) it did take a couple of go’s to get the technique. Oil/solvent smell does take quite a few days to go, so try to leave to cure where it won’t bother you. Overall very pleased with the product.

Too heavy and dark
I ordered a sample and it seemed fine. I ordered a large tin and on the second coat it looked like I'd painted the worktop in dark brown gloss so it all had to be removed!

Good colour, easy to apply, great finish
You'll see this is the same review as another I did for a tint in this range - does the same job and tested the same way. I've been looking for a consistent, high quality, easily applied finish, and this looks like itI I've used the product on rustic finished Console tables and am impressed with the colour coverage and water resistance - did some spill tests and the water beaded and was easily removed. Just to say, this worked well for me for giving a 'limed' finish, and a light look to the wood - with the grain visible. I know it's obvious but this does not give a white paint finish - suggest using white paint if that's what you need! :-) I didn't follow the instructions exactly as I didn't want a well sanded finish, and found the first coat easier to apply with a lint free cloth to rub across the surface, get into the grain, and spread it evenly, then wipe off the residue. 2nd coat very easy to apply. I've since bought the clear matt version so I can use one tint coat (or water based stain) then apply the clear, to get a light colour, and protected finish. Looking forward to trying it on highly finished surfaces, but am pretty confident from what I've seen it will do the business. I've used e.g. teak oil, danish oil, worktop oil, chopping board oils, stains, beeswax finishes applied with 00 wire wool etc, but for internal furniture, I think this could be come my go-to.

Perfect
After advise from the team it was Put on oak flooring to neutralise the honey colour that natural varnishes were giving. Worked perfect. Easy to put on. Very happy.

Easy to apply and give a very good white tint to the wood
Ensure you follow instructions ie sanding wood first before applying first coat. Needs two coats to get the best finish. Very pleased used it for worktops and it looks great.
