PeelAway 1 Paint Remover is a highly effective poultice stripper ideal for use on wood, brick, concrete, metal and ornate plaster. Effectively removes and neutralises lead-based paints for safe disposal. Especially useful for decorative coving, ceiling roses, cornices and fire places. The blankets protect the paste from drying out, meaning the active ingredients are working for longer.

Sold as a complete kit including cover blankets, application spatula and neutraliser located inside the container:

  • 5kg (includes 4 x 1sqm of Blanket, spatula and 250ml neutraliser and are located in the lid)
  • 15kg (includes 10 x 1sqm of Blanket, spatula and 1L neutraliser and are located in the lid)

Additional Peelaway 1 Blankets and PeelAway 1 Neutraliser are available if required

To remove coatings applied after the 1970s, use PeelAway 7

Not sure what type of paint or varnish you have? We recommend trying the PeelAway 1 and 7 Sample Twin Pack first, to find out which product will work best for your project and to assess thickness and drying time requirements.

Preparation

Preparation

Back

Ensure that surfaces are free from dust, dirt and any other contaminates so that the PeelAway paste has good contact and adhesion with the surface to be treated.

  • Cover and protect any surfaces not intended to be stripped by Peel Away 1
  • Check if the substrate / surface to be treated is resistant to high alkalinity
  • Composite materials, bound with natural adhesives and glue will be adversely affected by PeelAway 1 and should be avoided

Application

Application

Back

Please note: Wear suitable protective clothing, gloves and safety goggles whilst applying this product

Always do a small test area to confirm performance and compatibility before starting any project and follow the manufacturer's instructions on the container at all times.

Some Points of Note

  • Should not be used to remove coatings from veneers, plywoods or aluminium
  • Softwoods such as pine may darken slightly
  • Oak can turn black after being in contact with the caustic-base
  • Mahogany may turn a purple hue
  • Hardwood timbers such as fine Veneers, Hemlock and Douglas Fir may also darken after contact with Peelaway 1, which may be prohibitive when the natural wood appearance is desired
  • In these situations, the use of a conventional Paint and Varnish Remover may be more appropriate

PeelAway 1 should not be used on gesso (a form of putty) mouldings sometimes used on carved fireplace surrounds. This product will work slower under 5°C and will not work if temperature falls below 0°C. PeelAway 1 will not remove some types of 2 pack epoxy coatings, baked enamels or cement based paints

Test Area

Test patches are vital for this product. Mask off a small area and apply the paste at different thicknesses to determine which thickness is required to remove the coating. Leave each test area for up to 12 hours and see how effective each has been. It is recommended that 3 test strips are done, 1mm, 2mm and 3mm, before starting the project to determine how much PeelAway 1 is required to be effective.

Application

  1. Apply PeelAway 1 with the supplied spatula or a synthetic brush
  2. Then apply the PeelAway blanket (supplied) over the paste and rub gently to ensure good adhesion and to remove any air bubbles
  3. The blanket delays the drying process, thus allowing the paste to work more effectively and should be left at least over night or up to 48 hours depending upon the results of the test patches - the more layers, the longer PeelAway should be left
  4. Once the paste has permeated all of the layers, the blanket can be removed with the Peelaway Easy Grip Stripping Knife (sold separately)
  5. The stripping knife can also be used to remove any remaining residual from the surface

Spray Application

  1. PeelAway 1 can be diluted with water for spray application through an airless spray system such as Wagner, Titan and Graco
  2. To thin the PeelAway for spraying, add between 10% and 15% water (maximum) and mix thoroughly to ensure that the water is evenly mixed with the product
  3. When spraying PeelAway, always wear protective overalls, goggles and a suitable face mask

Please Note: Surfaces that have been over-coated for many years may require PeelAway 7 first to deal with the more modern layers. These are the coatings applied from around 1970 onwards. PeelAway 1 is more effective on older coatings from the early 1970's and prior .

Neutralisation

Neutralisation is an important step in this process, as moisture containing PeelAway 1 residue may bleed out of the substrate and raise the pH of the surface. This will affect not only the adhesive properties of future coatings but their appearance too.

  1. Mix 1 part Neutraliser with 1 part water
  2. Pour water into empty bucket then carefully add equal portion of PeelAway Neutraliser
  3. For plaster surfaces, dilute four parts water to 1 part PeelAway Neutraliser
  4. Pour diluted neutraliser into a garden type pressure sprayer or for smaller areas a hand-held trigger sprayer
  5. Start at the top and spray the entire surface until saturated
  6. Do not apply to surface in any way other than spraying as this may contaminate the Neutraliser
  7. Allow Neutraliser to remain on the surface until dry to the touch, but no less than 6 hours
  8. Neutralising effectiveness is maximised by scrubbing the surface once the Neutraliser has been sprayed on, but do not scrub plaster or gesso surfaces
  9. Rinse surface with a steady spray of clean water
  10. For external use apply sensible water pressure, enough to thoroughly rinse but not damage the surface
  11. Test pH level of the surface with pH paper supplied
  12. Most accurate testing is accomplished when the surface has been allowed to air dry for a minimum of 24 hours after the neutralising process (Instructions for using the pH testing papers are attached to the handle of PeelAway 1 Neutraliser container)
  13. Moisten surface with water and apply a small strip of pH paper to the surface and note colour change and compare with pH charts on the inside of the covers of the pH papers
  14. Any surface with pH of more than 8 should be re-neutralised and left to dry thoroughly before re-testing

Finishing

Finishing

Back

As a precaution, if PeelAway 1 is used and the surface is to be re-painted, using an alkaline resistant sealer/primer is recommended prior to re-painting. Re-paint only when the surface has dried out below 15% moisture content and the substrate has been lightly sanded.

Which Peelaway product is best for my project?

We recommended buying the PeelAway 1 and 7 Sample Twin Pack. Not only will this tell you which Peelaway will work best for your specific project, you can also gauge how thick the product needs to be applied, to be effective against the coating to be removed..

Will the Peelaway 1 cause any issues on glass?

We would recommend masking the glass as it will cure quickly on this surface. If it gets on the glass, you would need to scrape/chip it off which could cause further issues

Excellent paint removal system
This product removes layers of paint very easily. Its consistency is a bit like Greek yogurt. You paste it on the paint you want to remove and cover the area with the peel away sheet (cut to size) provided. I tape down the edges so that it doesn’t lift as it starts to work. However don’t let the product dry out otherwise it will be difficult to remove as the paint seems to stick back down. Also wash any splashes immediately as it can start to burn if it comes into contact with skin.

Good product which did the job after a few applications
Good product which worked well after a few applications. Definitely need to do plenty of test patches as advised to work out timings. Peelaway paper ran out quicker than I hoped but fortunately I had another tub. Would definitely use again.

Works exactly as described
Used on a piece of architectural ceramics with more than 2 layers of ancient paint. Applied and left for 48 hours. All paint peeled away easily.

Second time I've used this, excellent product
Second time I've stripped wood within the home and think this is an amazing product. Does the job effectively. Easy application. Can be messy and the clear up does seem to take forever but that would be the same for similar products/methods. Would highly recommend.

Really efficient
This is so much better than a ‘normal’ paint stripper - apply it once and left for 36 hours and 8 layers of paint have come away. Granted the cleanup of old varnish is horrendous but will be worth it.

It works
Used this to strip a Victorian cast iron fireplace and it worked a treat. Stripped years of paint in one go

Only Peel away 1 works
Since Nitromors became useless I really struggled to find a decent stripper . This stuff is great although be warned it burns. 1.Always use gloves it’s really really caustic 2Follow the instructions to the letter. 3.But the most important is to neutralise with the product provided and measure it carefully to dilute. If you don’t and the item stripped is for instance a window frame,it will get wet and reactivate and your new paint will come straight off. I mention all this as we all know what builders are like with instructions and I’ve made all these mistakes so you don’t have to. Also watch your eyes one of my labourers got a tiny bit in his eye nearly blinded him.

Works pretty well, but my product was lumpy already
The product seems to work like it should, but it's already got lumps of dry product running through it which can't be helping the process. Considering the price it's a shame the product isn't 100%.

Takes it all off
I use this product to strip old plaster corbels and ceiling roses. Apply a decent coat and cover it all, when it falls off in 2/3 days it's done. It works on anything that is painted or varnished. No burning old paint off which can contain lead and arsenic. No burning yourself on tin after tin of nitromors which doesn't work anyway. Most people give up stripping old woodwork or plaster but this strips it by itself.

Fantastic product, forget Nitromors
I have has some great advice and guidance from Wood Fineshes direct about the Peelaway prodcuts, about 7 years ago I embarked on a home project to strip all of our 1930's house hall panels as they were caked in layers of paint. I tried a couple of methods, scraping, blow torch, but soon realised this was dangerous and damaging as the paint contained lead. This where Peelaway came in and used it to strip our hallway panels. I went on to strip many of the original skirting boards and window ledges, which exposed the beautiful wood grain. I tried the 2 sample pots of Peelaway 1 and Peelaway 7 and found Peelaway 1 to be far superior. No delamination of our wood panels. Recently we upgraded our downstair loo, again peelaway 1 came to the rescue, no delamination of plywood either. It is very powerful and needs to be used with care as it will burn skin. If you are serious about stripping paint that could contain lead, Peelaway is the product for you, forget Nitromors or a flame torch. Only word of warning Peelaway 1 is so powerful that it starts working in under 10 mins. So if you are like me and are/were stripping vertical panels, be prepared to have to build frames that holds the Peelaway in place. In my experience I had about 10mins before the Peelaway started slippingdown the wall having stripped the first layer of paint. You will always get air gaps, so be prepared to re-apply, old toothbrushes are great to clean out corners. Take the supplied acid seriously, along with the pH papers, you will need to neutralise the caustic nature of Peelaway, before applying any polyx oil or varnish. I have even used Peelaway to rejuvenate stainless steel cooking trays that had become caked in carbon
