Overview

Barrettine Premier Wood Preserver is ideal for most exterior wood care projects, including sheds, fences, exterior windows and frames, doors, carports, shutters, garden gates and more. This product can be used as a standalone treatment or as a base-coat for a protective exterior wood oil or decking oil.

Barrettine Premier Wood Preservative contains a small amount of wax making it unsuitable for use with water-based paints, varnishes and stains. Instead we recommend the wax and silicone-free product Barrettine Premier Universal Preservative.

Please Note: The UV resistance only applies to the coloured variations, but not to the clear

Preparation

Preparation

Back

Ensure that wooden surfaces to be treated with Barrettine Wood Preserver are clean, dry and free from surface dirt, debris and other surface contaminates.

New Bare Wood

  1. If required, new bare timber can be cleaned and de-greased with methylated spirit prior to application of wood preserver
  2. Freshly cut sawn ends should be thoroughly treated with either Barrettine Premier Wood Preserver, or alternatively Barrettine End Grain Preserver

Previously Treated Wood

  1. Any surface coatings such as paints, varnishes and stains must be fully removed back to clean, bare wood by sanding or using a suitable Paint or Varnish Remover
  2. Wood that has been oiled in the last year should be allowed to weather for at least one year or until the wood preservative is able to penetrate through to the timber

Old Untreated Wood

  1. Wood that has become decayed should be removed and replaced
  2. Cut out and burn all decayed wood at least 45cm beyond the area of damage
  3. Brush down the wood with a stiff broom or brush to remove any ingrained surface dirt and debris
  4. Traces of mould, algae or fungi must be removed with a stiff brush or scraper
  5. Areas that have been affected by mould, algae or fungi should be treated with Barrettine Mould and Mildew Cleaner
  6. Any existing cases of woodworm can be treated with Barrettine Premier Woodworm Killer
  7. Fill any gaps or splits in the wood with a suitable wood filler

Application

Application

Back

Always do a test area before starting any project and follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times. Only apply in temperatures of between 10°C and 30°C. Shake or stir well prior to and during application to ensure a consistent colour.

  1. Apply Barrettine Wood Preserver using a synthetic brush, microfibre roller or shed & fence spray system*
  2. For the best protection apply a minimum of 2 coats to rough / sawn and smooth timber
  3. Where possible, end grain should be dipped or given extra coats for additional protection
  4. Allow 12 hours drying time between coats

*Although the solvent content of this product can perish the washers and hoses of some spray systems, it can still be a time and cost effective way to treat large areas. We recommend that if using a spray system you try to complete the project in one day. This said however, depending on the type and brand of sprayer, it may take longer than this.

Cleaning Equipment

After use, paint brushes can be cleaned with Barrettine Brush Cleaner or Barrettine Paint Brush Restorer.

Finishing

Finishing

Can Barrettine Premier Colours Preserver be applied to damp wood?

If the product is applied to a wet or damp piece of timber, it will not adhere or dry and it can do more harm than good. Brennenstuhl Moisture Detector can be used to ascertain the moisture content of the timber. This reading should be below 20% before applying any products.

Can indoor wood floor be wiped over with water once the wood preserver has dried?

The Barrettine Premier Wood Preserver is wax enriched so can be wiped over with water. Please note that this product is marketed as an exterior product.

Will the clear version of this product darken the wood?

Yes, depending on the porosity of the grain, the clear version of this product will darken the wood as much as water does. The wood will look as it does after rain.

Is this all I need to protect my summer house?

This product is commonly used on its own on sheds and fences and other exterior items constructed of rough wood, however for a total treatment we recommend over-coating with Barrettine Log Cabin Treatment or Clear Barrettine Decking Oil for added water repellency and weather protection.

If protecting the natural colour of the wood is important, use the clear preservative then overcoat with Osmo UV Protection Oil Extra or Fiddes Exterior High Build Wood Oil.

Can I use Barrettine Wood Preservative on a chicken shed and dog kennel?

Barrettine Wood Preservative is perfectly safe to use on any surface that comes into contact with animals when dry. This includes but is not limited to dog kennels, chicken sheds and houses, horse stables and more. It's important to remember that this wood preservation treatment should be over-coated with a suitable exterior wood oil or decking oil. Animals should only come into contact with the surface of the wood when both the wood preserver and oil have fully dried.

Can I paint over the Barrettine Premier Preserver after a year?

It is the wax in the product that would stop a paint from adhering, we would normally say 24 months of weathering is sufficient for that wax to go. If preparation is carried out prior to painting, you would have the best chance of adhesion.

Very good coverage, easy to apply
Good quality, easy to use, be aware as product is quite thin but covers well. Only needed one coat as I was going over previously treated fence panels, on bare wood probably need to have two coats. Product penetrates well and gives a natural finish. Would highly recommend.

Barrettine wood protective treatment
Super happy with the way it goes on to 2 year old tanalised wood. Goes a long way with each brush full and as long as you spread it well you get very little runs. Brushing them out is stress free should you get any. A 5ltr tin covered a 10 x 6 shed, including inside and outside of the double doors twice, with a bit left over. The second coat is even better. Easy and faster to apply. Everyone has their own favourite colour, but Summer Tan is a beautiful warm mid brown/red with a nice semi sheen. No idea how long it will last, but have no reason to think I will need to do anything for a couple of years or so. Barrettine were also super helpful with advice before I purchased from Wood finishers direct. Extremely happy with the end result. When you spend so much on a Summer house, you want a paint to enhance its look.
