Overview

Overview

Back

Sadolin Classic Wood Protection is an all-purpose wood stain for interior and exterior, smooth and rough sawn timber. Ideal as a standalone stain or as a base-stain for products in the Sadolin range, including Sadolin Extra Durable Woodstain and Sadolin Extra Durable Clearcoat.

Please note: Sadolin are updating the design of the tin for this product but the product inside remains the same. When ordering this product, and until we receive the new design tins, you may receive the old style tins or a combination of both the old and new style if ordering more than 1 tin.

Preparation

Preparation

Back

Timber surfaces must be suitably prepared, clean, sound and dry. The moisture content should not exceed 18% prior to coating.

Old or Previously Treated Timber

  • All previous coatings and finishes must be removed by sanding to expose clean, sound, bare wood
  • Degrease any exposed bare timber surface by wiping with a lint-free cloth dampened with methylated spirits to remove any surface impurities or resinous deposits
  • Knotting agents should not be used with Sadolin woodstain systems
  • Hardwoods such as Teak, Ipe, Meranti and Balau must be thoroughly de-greased with methylated spirits prior to applying Sadolin Classic Wood Protection, as they contain a lot of natural oils
  • Any minor surface defects, imperfections or open joints can be filled with a suitable wood filler prior to coating
  • Only use non-ferrous screws, nails and fixings

New Timber

  • Any timber that has not been previously treated with a wood preservative should be treated with two liberal coats of Sadolin Quick Drying Wood Preserver, paying particular attention to end grains and allowing 24 hours drying time between coats, before over-coating with Sadolin Classic Wood Protection
  • Where possible, the base coat should be applied to all surfaces of the wood prior to fixing in place

Please Note: If using this product on decking, be advised that it is only suitable for new decking or decking that has been completely stripped or sanded back to bare wood.

Previously Stained Timber

  • Lightly abrade, in the direction of the grain, ensuring not to break through the surface coating, and removing any remaining sanding dust after
  • Where there is localised damage, or deterioration has occurred as a result of exposure of the factory coating for longer than 3 months, affected areas should be thoroughly sanded back to a sound substrate and re-coated
  • If a coloured base stain is required in order to match the existing factory applied coating, use Sadolin Classic Wood Protection in the most appropriate colour before proceeding as described above

Glazing

  • The backs of new glazing beads, end grains and rebates should be brought forward to a finish using the full Sadolin system prior to fixing
  • Joinery to be coated with this product should be glazed using a suitable sealant
  • The use of linseed oil putty or modified, non-setting compounds are not recommended in conjunction with Sadolin Wood Protection systems
  • To confirm compatibility, please consult the manufacturer of the relevant glazing material
  • Silicone glazing materials should only be applied upon completion of the finishing coats

Application

Application

Back

Always do a test area before starting any project to assess product suitability and final finish. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times.

Do not apply if there is a risk of rain, or when air / substrate temperatures are below 8 °C or above 25 °C, or if the relative humidity is above 80% during application or drying periods. Protect from frost and rain until dry. Failure to meet these requirements may adversely affect the drying, visual quality and durability of the finish.

Ensure that Sadolin Woodstain is thoroughly stirred before and during application, otherwise sheen and colour variations may be experienced. Sadolin Classic Wood Protection is ready to use from the tin and does not require thinning.

  1. For best results use a good quality, long-haired, soft bristle brush
  2. Apply Sadolin Classic Wood Protection in a full flowing coat, working well into joints and ensuring end grains or sawn timbers are coated to saturation
  3. After 5-10 minutes redistribute the coating by brushing evenly in the direction of the grain
  4. Avoid over spreading Sadolin Classic as this will reduce the long term durability and performance of the coating
  5. Sand between coats if there is any raised grain
  6. Allow the first coat to dry for 16-24 hours before recoating

Finishing

Finishing

Back

Two coats are normally recommended for planed surfaces. However, to ensure optimum durability and uniformity of appearance, we recommend the use of 1 coat of Sadolin Classic Wood Protection prior to finishing with 2 full coats of Sadolin Extra Durable Woodstain, Sadolin Extra Durable Clearcoat, Sadolin Outdoor Varnish or Sadolin Yacht Varnish.

Maintenance

A lightening in colour, reduction in sheen and a loss of water-repellency is an indication that maintenance is required. For general maintenance, lightly abrade in the direction of the wood grain and clean using warm water and a mild detergent, then rinse thoroughly with clean water. Once dry, a fresh coat of Sadolin Classic Wood Protection can be applied.

If the finish is badly flaking or peeling, to the point where the bare wood is showing through or has started to grey, please follow the full Preparation and Application instructions above.

F.A.Q.

F.A.Q.

Back
Can Sadolin Classic be used on Decking?

Yes, this product can be used on decking as long as the wood is bare. Three coats will be required.

I have left this product in storage for over 6 months and the solvents have risen to the top and very thin consistency. Is it safe to use?

Simon from Sadolin recommends not just stirring but 'folding' the product with an inch thick bladed knife (not just a normal wood stirrer) and this should fix the problem and get the normal consistency back. Test the product on the surface with a brush after.

Can this be used on a wooden Kitchen Floor?

Yes, this product can be applied to interior wooden floors but must be finished with a Sadolin varnish suitable for flooring such as the Sadolin Polyurethane Floor Varnish.

If I decide on a colour in Classic, can I choose a different colour in the Extra Durable if I do not like it?

Absolutely. As a translucent product, the colour will perhaps be a cross between the two shades but can be built up as you apply more coats over time. It is always easier to go darker than it is to go lighter due to the contrast. We recommend doing a test area to assess the final results.

Will Sadolin Classic stain clothes if used on a garden bench?

This product works very well on garden furniture and once it is completely dry, should not stain or mark clothing.

Excellent product You cant go wrong with Sadolin
Decorator had no complaints about the product. He put 3 coats on the barge boards , soffits, porch and window reveals. The finish is a slight sheen and it looks really good. We used the same product 16 years ago on the house woodwork. It last really well.

Bought this as the first treatment for my exterior raised decking supports (posts and beams in Douglas Fir). Very pleased with the coverage and colour and will follow up with Sadolin extra durable cover in the same colour.

Sadolin classic provides a quality finish is durable and easy to apply. Although not the cheapest the fact it is long lasting tends to justify the outlay.
