Preparation

Preparation

Back

Decked areas to be treated should be clean, dry, and free from traces of dust, dirt, oil, grease, wax, and silicone.

New Decking Preparation

For all bare wood decking including tanalised, pressure treated and preservative impregnated decking timbers.

New softwood decking

  1. Treat with Clear Ronseal Total Wood Preservative (as this is wax-free) for the best protection. (The coloured versions contain wax which will cause adhesion problems)
  2. If possible, preserve all sides including end grain prior to installation
  3. Sweep the decking with a stiff broom to remove all traces of surface dirt and debris
  4. Use a suitable decking cleaner if required before oiling

New hardwood decking

Hardwood decking usually requires a period of weathering to allow the surface grain to open. This allows for better absorption of the decking oil. Check the decking manufacturer's guidance on how long decking should be left to weather before treating.

Old Decking Preparation

Old 'coating' type finishes such as decking paints, varnishes and varnish type stains must be fully removed back to bare wood before oiling. Depending on the condition and type of finish, it may require more than one attempt to fully remove the old coating.

  1. Ensure that all 'coating' type finishes have been fully removed to expose bare wood by either jet washing or using Ronseal Decking Stripper
  2. Clean old decking oil finishes thoroughly with Ronseal Decking Cleaner and Reviver or an alternative decking cleaner
  3. Then treat as 'New Decking' above

Application

Application

Back

Always do a test area before starting any project to assess product suitability and final finish. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times. Do not apply in damp conditions, when rain is likely, or in temperatures below 10°C.

  1. Shake the tin thoroughly before pouring the entire contents into a suitable metal or plastic container. If using more than one tin mix them together (Do not thin or dilute)
  2. Apply liberally to ensure that even penetration and complete coverage of the decking is achieved
  3. Treat 3-4 decking boards at a time to avoid overlap marks
  4. Redistribute any excess oil along the decking boards or wipe off with a clean cloth
  5. Allow 4 hours drying time between coats
  6. Apply an even second coat as above

Regular Cleaning

To preserve the oiled finish for longer, we recommend that wooden decking is swept with a stiff broom on a regular basis to remove loose leaves, dirt, and other organic matter. This prevents a build up of organic matter that can settle on the deck and in the grooves, which can degrade and damage the finish and decking timbers over time.

Deep Cleaning

Scuff marks, stains, grease and other surface contaminates can be cleaned with a suitable decking cleaner prior to re-oiling.

Maintenance

Inspect the finish on an annual basis and apply a fresh coat of oil as and when required.

Repair

Stubborn marks and stains may require a light sanding before re-applying a thin coat of Ronseal Ultimate Protection Decking Oil to the affected area.

Back
What is best pretreatment before applying the Ronseal Ultimate Protection Decking Oil? A cleaner, or power washer and how powerful?

It would depend on the condition of the decking beforehand. Most commonly, on bare decking, if it shows signs of weathering or mould, we recommend using the Ronseal Decking Cleaner and Reviver and rinsing off after with a gentle wash. When the decking is dry, to ensure the longevity of the wood, you can then apply Ronseal Total Wood Preservative (wait 72 hours for the solvents to evaporate) before application of the decking oil.

Fantastic decking protection!
Love this product as it goes on really easily and dries quickly. It makes the decking look like new again. Rain just doesn’t sink into the wood after applying! You need 2 coats for best effect and protection.

Excellent product that I will use again when required
First time using this decking oil on untreated wood, very easy to apply, brushed on with a fully loaded brush. Spread well and evenly, soaking in quickly and giving a good all-over protective coating.

Does what it says on the tin
I've used this product before in the clear finish but we decided to go for a slightly darker effect this time. The teak colour is quite realistic but our decking boards were installed with the ridged side uppermost and so the colour is not as even as I would like as it tends to collect in the grooves where it appears darker. This is not down to the product but the quality of our deck.

Good quality decking oil
I needed to re-coat over the first application, but hopefully that'll survive a few years.
