Preparation

Back

Make sure that wood to be painted is clean, dry and free from dirt, dust and other surface contaminants.

Bare or New Wood

  • Fill any holes or cracks with Ronseal High Performance Wood Filler
  • Treat any resinous knots with a suitable knotting solution if required
  • Lightly sand the wood with P120 sandpaper to ensure a smooth consistent finish
  • Sand in the direction of the wood grain
  • Remove all traces of sanding dust before painting

Previously Painted Wood

  • Old paint that is sound and intact should be lightly sanded with P240 sandpaper to provide a key
  • Remove all traces of sanding dust
  • Wipe down surface with white spirit to clean and degrease surface and allow to dry
  • Paint that has started to crack or peel must be sanded back to bare wood, using P120 sandpaper
  • Fill any gaps with Ronseal High Performance Wood Filler
  • Then treat as 'Bare or New Wood' above

Application

Application

Back

Always do a test area before starting any project to assess product suitability and final finish. Follow the manufacturers instructions on the tin at all times.

  1. Stir thoroughly before and periodically during use
  2. Apply with a synthetic bristle brush, going with the direction of the wood grain
  3. Allow 4 hours to dry between coats
  4. Apply 2 coats if painting previously coated wood, 3 coats if applying to bare wood

For best results, use lighter colours in areas exposed to high levels of sunlight. The longevity of the finish will vary depending on the paint colour and the type and condition of the timber or existing paintwork. A South-facing position and the level of shade will also affect durability.

Can Ronseal 10 Year Weatherproof Wood Paint be used on a plastic front door?

No, this is only suitable for wood.

I want to paint patio wooden joist and balustrade. Is this suitable on treated softwood?

Yes, this product can be used on treated softwood. You must treat any resinous knots with a suitable knotting solution before application. Please note that this product is not suitable for decking.

Could this be used on internal wooden stairs?

No, exterior products are manufactured to be much more flexible than interior products as they need to cope with the expansion and contraction of the timber, therefore exterior products are not as durable to knocks and scrapes.

Can you use 10 Yr Weatherproof Paint to paint composite?

Ronseal only mention wood for application surfaces. Why not call our Woodcare Experts on 01303 213838 to discuss your options.

Is the Ronseal Weatherproof Paint opaque? If I paint a surface that has areas with white wood filler will the white show through or does this colour it completely?

This in an opaque paint which will completely block out the colour underneath, including the filler (if it is paintable.) Check with the fillers manufacturers guidance first if you are unsure, otherwise you may wish to consider Ronseal High Performance Wood Filler which can be painted.

Could I use Ronseal Weatherproof Paint on wooden gutter fascias?

Absolutely, this product is ideal for this project.

Is this paint strong enough for an outdoor table with cups, glasses plates etc on top without the paint chipping?

We wouldn't recommend this paint on surfaces like garden tables as it may not quite be durable enough for this. Why not consider Protek Royal Exterior Paint instead which will provide much better resistance against cups, plates etc, lasting longer on this type of project.

Can you use a detergent on Ronseal 10 Year Weatherproof 2-in-1 Wood Paint?

Once your weatherproof paint has dried, you can clean as normal with warm, soapy water or a diluted all-purpose cleaning solution.

More like semi transparent woodstain than paint
I like the colour of this paint, dark grey/blue, and it's easy to apply. Those are the good points. Not so good is the semi-transparent nature of this paint. It is more like a woodstain than paint. In fact even a fairly heavily applied coat is semi-transparent. The tin states three coats over previously painted areas. I used five coats and that just about hides the substrate. - Three weeks after application, rain appears to soak into the top coat turning the colour back to pale blue as it was in the tin. This apparent water staining disappears once the rain has stopped and surface has dried, then the original colour returns to normal. It's a bit worrying though. I will be very surprised if this paint lasts as long as the maker's claim.

Ronseal 10year outdoor paint
Easy to work with and does the job although in Scotland it doesn't last 10 years with the weather it has to endure
