Overview

Overview

Back

Ronseal Super Flexible Primer and Undercoat helps prepare bare exterior wood before applying any top coat. Use the white undercoat for the light colour range or grey wood primer for all other colours. This product can be used on previously painted wood to cover bold colours and dark marks.

Preparation

Preparation

Back

Ensure the wood surface to be painted with Ronseal Primer and Undercoat is clean, dry and free from dirt, dust and grease. Put down dust sheets to cover anything that you don't want to get paint on.

Bare or New Timber

  1. Lightly sand wood with a 120 grit sandpaper, sanding in the direction of the woodgrain
  2. Remove any wood dust, and wipe the wood surface with a lint-free cloth dampened with white spirit
  3. Fill in any small holes or surface defects with Ronseal Multi Purpose Wood Filler, or Ronseal High Performance Wood Filler for larger repairs
  4. Treat any wood knots with an appropriate knotting solution
  5. Remove any mould growth with a dedicated mould and mildew cleaner and leave to dry

Previously Painted TImber

  1. Old paint that shows signs of cracking, peeling or flaking should be completely removed with a dedicated paint stripper prior to application of Flexible Primer & Undercoat
  2. Paintwork in sound condition should be lightly sanded first to provide a key
  3. Ensure that all traces of sanding dust have been removed after sanding
  4. Fill any gaps or splits in the wood with a suitable wood filler

OId Timber

  1. Any instances of wet rot can be treated with Ronseal Wet Rot Wood Hardener, and any existing woodworm can be eradicated with Ronseal Woodworm Killer
  2. Use a suitable wood filler to repair any damaged areas and replace any decayed wood with sound timber
  3. Then treat as 'New Timber' above

Application

Application

Back

Always do a small test area before starting any project to assess performance and follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times.

Stir contents of tin thoroughly prior to and during application to ensure a consistent finish. If the job will require more than one tin, intermix before use to ensure an even colour.

  1. Apply two even coats of Ronseal Super Flexible Primer using a good quality synthetic brush and finishing in the direction of the wood grain
  2. Apply a second coat after 4 hours
  3. After the second coat has dried, give the surface a light sanding with a 240 grit sandpaper

Finishing

Finishing

Back

Once Ronseal Super Flexible Primer and Undercoat is fully dry, a top coat of paint can be applied.

Could I use this to repaint a red wendy house blue and prep a fence?

For previously painted surfaces this can be used to help change colours and aid adhesion. You must first provide a key to allow the primer to cling hold of the surface. If the fence is bare wood and you intend to paint it, this would be a good choice.

.
Can Ronseal Flexible Primer and Undercoat be used to change the colour on a laminate light brown floor? If not, any suggestions would be great want to change the light wood look to white

The Ronseal Super Flexible Primer and Undercoat is only suitable for exterior use. Consider Ronseal Knot Block Wood Primer and Undercoat instead but please note, it is only suitable for use on bare wood. If your laminate flooring is wood and bare, these products can be used. After the primer, you must paint the surface with a suitable floor paint which will give a complete opaque look, blocking out the wood grain.

Excellent, does what it says on the tin
Excellent: applies well and dried well too. Didn't need as much as I thought, even with two coats.

Quality and reliable
Bought this undercoat for a Wooden Childrens Playhouse in Spain. Sun and extreme temperatures are a problem for wood buildings in Spain so wanted a top quality primer to protect the wood and give a good base for the beautiful Paint I bought for the exterior. This paint has been a pleasure to work with, smooth application and good coverage and I have since bought 2 more tins. Does what it says on the Tin.

Quality Product
Easy to apply. Looks substantial and has formed a good foundation for the deep blue paint applied on top. Feel confident that the top coat won’t flake off so quickly now.
