Overview

Overview

Back

Protek Wood Preserver ++ is an effective wood preservative used for pre-treatment of non-resistant wood in outdoor areas. Must be overcoated with a top coat finish.

Please note: This product is the new formulation that replaces the old 'Protek Wood Preserver Plus', which was for commercial use only. This product is not suitable for use on interior wood.

All outside wood, which is not in direct contact to soil or surface water can be treated with Protek Wood Preserver ++. This includes façades, windows (inner and outer parts), exterior doors (inner and outer parts), carports, shutters and balcony railings etc.

Please Note: This product should not be used in indoor living spaces apart from external windows and doors. This product dries clear.

Preparation

Preparation

Back

The wood surface to be treated must be clean, dry and free from dust, dirt or any other surface contaminants.

  • All previous coatings must be completely removed by sanding to bare wood or using a dedicated wood stripper
  • If necessary grey or deteriorated wood should be sanded down to a clean, sound surface
  • Remove any mould or algae with a suitable mould and mildew cleaner
  • Fill any gaps or imperfections with a suitable exterior wood filler
  • Wear suitable protective clothing, safety goggles and protective gloves (e.g. nitrile rubber gloves) when applying this product

Application

Application

Back

Always do a test area to assess product suitability before starting any project. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the container at all times.

Wood should be frost free when treated. Do not apply in damp conditions or if rain is imminent. Protek Wood Preserver Plus is a ready-to-use product and does not need to be diluted. The temperature of the wood and product should not be below 10°C or above 30°C.

For professional use, this product can be applied by dipping (or flow coating) in special facilities and equipment, or by spraying in closed devices. For regular DIY use, apply the product with a synthetic brush.

  1. Stir product thoroughly before use
  2. Apply the wood preserver with a synthetic brush, spreading out thinly and evenly along the wood grain
  3. Apply 2-3 coats, depending on wood species and surface characteristics, leaving 6 hours between coats

Drying time: 6 hours under normal conditions (20°C / 65% rel. humidity). Low temperatures, increased humidity and ingredients of some wood types may increase drying time.

Some Points of Note

  • Handle product and dry freshly treated wood in areas of good ventilation
  • Keep freshly treated wood roofed or otherwise protected against rain until complete dryness
  • During application to in situ timbers and whilst surfaces are drying do not contaminate soil and surface waters with product
  • Avoid release to the environment, do not empty into drains and do not allow this product to reach aquatic environments, the ground or sewer system
  • Protect soil, plants, aquatic environments from splashes of product

Cleaning Equipment

Clean tools immediately after use with warm water, subsequently rinse with clear water or use a commercial brush cleaner.

Finishing

Finishing

Back

Once fully dry, timber treated with Protek Wood Preserver ++ must be coated with a suitable top coat, such as Protek Stable Coat, Protek Royal Exterior Finish or Protek Royal Exterior Stain. Alternatively, this product can be over-coated with most other top coat products, however always carry out a test area to assess product compatibility and adhesion.

Quality product
We got a large tin with our log cabin, but we needed a little more so I purchased the small tin, just to get the last coat of three on inside cabin. Delivery quick was really impressed and the wood preserver goes on easy. Next year when I'm re-doing the coats I will definitely buy again.

Works a treat
On bare naked wood this does exactly what you would hope and used in tandem with eco shield (Protek) it keeps your wood protected. And Low VOC’s which is why I chose to try these in first place but products are great also

A bit early to say how effective it is
I have found this product to be very easy to apply with a sprayer, I would say that using a brush you need to make sure that you are waring enough PPE, as being so thin, it can go everywhere as well as where you need it to. Overall easy to use, only time will tell how effective it is.

Goes on well and seems to stay put even if it gets rained on the following day
It's a preservative so only time will really tell. I have used this product alongside another well known preservative on an interlocking wood cabin and in comparison it was nice to use, it has a slightly satin finish when applied and dried so you can see any bits you have missed it also appeared to be shower resistant after a few hours of drying time which was handy as it rained the following morning before I could overcoat it. Drips did form a small spot on the decking which was tough to remove (annoying but gives me confidence in it not washing off readily) I believe it would be worth using a dust sheet or similar to prevent this issue. I have bought 2 more tins (10ltrs) as I'm intending to use it as my go to exterior preservative from now on. 👍

Bit messy to apply but a good product
The product is water based, so I found trying to apply it with a brush was not easy. To make the application faster I used a cheap pump up garden/weed sprayer which was really efficient. However when using this method be mindful of over spray.

Get this straight on new untreated wood ASAP. Goes on easy and dries quick.

Easy to apply and covers well
I cant say how well this preserves the wood as I have only just put it on, but covers well and goes on easy. As this is as thin as water be careful when opening the tin, ensure you wipe the drips as these dry very hard and will need sanding the next day if left. I used this on bare wood and it does colour the wood to a more golden colour, which is good otherwise you won’t be able to tell you have done anything. I did 2 coats on a 6m x 3m log cabin , in 4 mornings. Also ensure you wear protective gloves and a full face mask, as I said it’s like water and splash’s everywhere. My face mask was covered.

Great preserver and easy to apply
Did exactly as described when applying hopefully it will provide the protection required. Difficult to review as only recently applied.
