Overview

Overview

Back

Polyvine Wax Finish Varnish combines the high durability of varnish with the silky feel of a wax finish and protects a wide range of surfaces against stains and scuffing. It is perfect for use on interior wood, MDF, new wooden furniture, doors, staircases, fire surrounds and kitchen cabinets.

Preparation

Preparation

Back

Ensure that surfaces to be varnished are clean, dry and free from dirt, dust, grease, wax, polish and any other surface contaminants.

Bare or New Wood
  1. Fill any gaps or minor imperfections in the wood using a suitable wood filler
  2. Lightly sand bare or new wood to provide a key
  3. Remove all traces of sanding dust prior to varnishing
  4. Degrease wooden surfaces with Methylated Spirit and a lint-free cloth if required
Previously Painted Surfaces
  1. Sand newly painted wood first to provide a key
  2. Remove all traces of sanding dust prior to varnishing
  3. Older painted wood, where the paint itself may fail, should be stripped using a hot air gun or a suitable paint stripper, then sanded and cleaned prior to coating with varnish

Application

Application

Back

Always do a test area before starting any project to assess product suitability and final finish. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the container at all times.

Please note: Polyvine Wax Finish Varnish should not be applied over uncured oil-based paint as this may cause discoloration.

  1. Ensure the product is well mixed. Do not shake
  2. Apply first coat thinly along the wood grain using a synthetic brush
  3. On porous surfaces dilute the first coat with 10% water
  4. Apply a second coat if a deeper colour is required
  5. Once dry, apply a final coat with Polyvine Wax Finish Varnish - Clear with desired choice of sheen
  6. For a 'dead flat' coloured finish, apply colour as above and finish with 'Clear - Dead Flat'
  7. Lightly denib the surface between applications
  8. Remove all traces of de-nibbing / sanding dust with a vacuum cleaner
  9. Allow 2-4 hours between coats and 15-60 minutes after the final coat before use

Please note: Where a 'dead flat' finish with a high degree of protection is required, Polyvine recommend that surfaces are first treated with 2 coats Wax Finish varnish and then finished with a thin coat of dead flat varnish. This will give a slightly brighter finish than using 'dead flat' on its own.

Cleaning Equipment

Application equipment can be cleaned using soap and water and allow to dry naturally.

Regular Cleaning

Surfaces coated with Polyvine Wax Finish Varnish can be wiped clean with a dampened lint-free cloth. Never soak wooden surfaces with water or use household detergents or cleaners as these can damage the finish.

F.A.Q.

F.A.Q.

Back
Does the Wax Finish Varnish still let the grain show through or do i need clear for that?

The Polyvine Coloured Wax Finish Varnish is slightly pigmented to give a new coloured effect to the timber. The wood grain and pattern will still show through coating as it is transparent.
