Preparation

Preparation

Back

Ensure that surfaces to be varnished are clean, dry and free from dirt, dust, grease, wax, polish and any other surface contaminants.

Bare or New Wood
  1. Fill any gaps or minor imperfections in the wood using a suitable wood filler
  2. Lightly sand bare or new wood to provide a key
  3. Remove all traces of sanding dust prior to varnishing
  4. Degrease wooden surfaces with Methylated Spirit and a lint-free cloth if required
Previously Painted Surfaces
  1. Sand newly painted wood first to provide a key
  2. Remove all traces of sanding dust prior to varnishing
  3. Older painted wood, where the paint itself may fail, should be stripped using a hot air gun or a suitable paint stripper, then sanded and cleaned prior to coating with varnish

Application

Application

Back

Always do a test area before starting any project to assess product suitability and final finish. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the container at all times.

Please note: Polyvine Wax Finish Varnish should not be applied over uncured oil-based paint as this may cause discoloration.

  1. Ensure the product is well mixed. Do not shake
  2. Thinly apply 2 coats along the wood grain using a synthetic brush
  3. On porous surfaces dilute the first coat with 10% water
  4. If a higher level of durability and stain resistance is required, apply 2 coats of satin clear and a top coat of dead flat clear
  5. Lightly denib the surface between applications
  6. Remove all traces of de-nibbing / sanding dust with a vacuum cleaner
  7. Allow 2-4 hours between coats and 15-60 minutes after the final coat before use

Please note: Where a 'dead flat' finish with a high degree of protection is required, Polyvine recommend that surfaces are first treated with 2 coats of 'Wax Finish Varnish' and then finished with a thin coat of dead flat varnish. This will give a slightly brighter finish than using 'dead flat' on its own.

Cleaning Equipment

Application equipment can be cleaned using soap and water. Once cleaned, allow to dry naturally.

Regular Cleaning

Surfaces coated with Polyvine Wax Finish Varnish can be wiped clean with a dampened lint-free cloth. Never soak wooden surfaces with water or use household detergents or cleaners as these can damage the finish over time.

F.A.Q.

F.A.Q.

Back
Should the Wax Finish Varnish be applied with a cloth so there are no brush marks?

Polyvine Wax Finish Varnish should be applied along the wood grain using a good quality synthetic brush such as ProDec Premier Synthetic Brush.

Is The Wax Finish completely transparent/ non- yellowing? I am varnishing over painted images.

Although the Varnish is clear, we would suggest looking at Polyvine Decorators Varnish instead as this is specifically designed to give long-term protection against finger marks, stains, scuffing and colour fading, making it ideal for this type of project.

Can Wax Finish Varnish be used on Candles?

This varnish is only suited for use on wood. It has not been tried and tested on wax candles so we cannot advise on how this would perform. Test areas are essential to assess results.

How long does Wax Varnish take to cure?

We recommend leaving the varnish for 5-7 days after application before it comes into contact with heat, water or abrasions so that the varnish can cure and be at its best performing stage.

Is Wax Finish Varnish durable enough to use on a floor? If not can you suggest a satin finish in this range that would work please

We wouldn't recommend this as the most durable option for flooring. Please try Polyvine Heavy Duty Floor Varnish for increased durability and protection of floors.

Can I use Polyvine Wax Finish Varnish over emulsion painted furniture?

We usually recommend Polyvine Decorators Varnish over emulsion paint. If you wanted the waxy finish why not consider Earthborn Furniture Wax instead.

Can I put Wax Finish Varnish over a stain?

Yes, the Polyvine Wax Finish Varnish works well to seal in a water-based stain. Do a test area first to assessthe final finish.

Will the clear matt Polyvine Wax Finish Varnish darken bare wood?

Polyvine Wax Finish Varnish is designed to provide a clear, natural-looking finish without significantly darkening bare wood. However, as with most clear finishes, there may be a slight enhancement to the natural grain and tone, giving it a richer appearance, but it won't alter the colour as a tinted product would.

If you're concerned about any slight colour change, it's always a good idea to test the varnish with a 100ml sample first. This will allow you to see how the finish interacts with your particular wood type..

Goes on easily and great finish
I had this varnish recommended to me for some unfinished internal oak doors. I’ve used three coats for durability but probably could get away with two. I found it easiest to apply with a roller to get the varnish onto the door with least faff and then used a good brush to even it out and get into the grain etc. It’s water clean up so that’s easy too. I’m onto my second 4 litre flagon and the first doors I did 3 years ago have stood up to use very well. This feels an excellent product and actually goes quite a long way. Worth the money.

Love this stuff
Been using this for years to protect paint work with a wax like finish. Absolutely love it, use it on doors, skirting, upcycled furniture etc. will do a coat of satin first if extra protection needed, followed by a couple of coats of matt.

Easy to apply and a nice waxy looking finish
Water based varnish, quick and easy to apply and has a pleasing waxy looking finish. I found a minimum of three coats were required to achieve a satisfactory result.

Just perfect for my project!
I dreaded to varnish our new wooden ceiling in our new kitchen. Varnish, I thought, would run down my sleeves and it would be a very messy affair. But no such thing: Polyvine Wax Finish Varnish was perfect, even for working above my head; easy to spread, no running, good looks. The job was done in no time, dry sleeves, and with no more mess than the odd drop on the plastic floor cover. Would recommend this product to anyone needing to varnish a wooden ceiling!

Lovely finish
Love this product- is really brings the colour of the stain together. I used it over Liberon Pallete wood stain. Gives a lovely feel to the wood without being shiny.
