Osmo Polyx Oil Tints is an extremely versatile hardwax oil stain that forms part of Osmo's interior range of finishing oils.

Please Note: Osmo recommend 1 coat of 'tint' followed by 1 coat of Polyx Oil Clear (with the exception of 'White 3040'). Customers have however used just 2 coats of the tint for a stronger depth of colour. 1 coat of tint followed by 1 coat of clear offers marginally better protection.

Polyx Oil White 3040 - It's important that the 'White' Polyx Oil is not over-coated with clear Polyx Oil. This can make the white finish turn a 'creamy' or 'off-white' colour. To retain the white finish, Osmo recommend that Polyx Oil White 3040 is over-coated with Osmo Polyx Oil Raw (3044).

The Gold and Silver Effect variations of this product are essentially a clear oil with tiny Gold and Silver flecks in them. For the best results, these products should be used on dark woods.

The 'Satin' sheen level in this range was previously called 'Satin Matt', the product however remains the same.

Before opening the 5ml sample sachets, squeeze the packet several times to ensure that the oil and pigments inside are thoroughly mixed. The 125ml tins can sometimes be printed in German.

Surfaces must be clean and dry, removing all traces of dust and dirt before application (maximum moisture content 20%). Only apply on a frost-free surface. For guaranteed performance, Osmo recommend that all traces of previous finishes are removed to expose clean, bare wood.

How to apply Osmo Polyx Oil Tints

Always do a test area before starting any project to assess product suitability and final finish. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times. Osmo Polyx-Oil Tints is ready-to-use from the tin, do not thin. Stir thoroughly prior and periodically during application to ensure a consistent finish. Osmo oils dry via oxidation so it is important to ensure good ventilation during application and drying.

Osmo Oil Application to Wood Floors

The ideal application tool is a firm, fine, natural bristled brush. For the best results, apply thinly and remove any excess oil from the surface of the wood with a clean, lint-free cloth.

  1. Apply first coat thinly and evenly along the wood grain with an Osmo Floor Brush - use in conjunction with the Osmo Telescopic Handle for ease of application
  2. Remove any surplus oil from the wood and leave to dry. Usually touch dry in 8 to 10 hours
  3. Lightly de-nib the surface
  4. Remove all traces of de-nibbing / sanding dust with a vacuum cleaner
  5. Apply a second thin coat and allow to fully dry
  6. Allow 24 hours before exposing the floor to normal use

Osmo Oil Application to Cork Floors

Cork tiles are best treated before fitting to avoid overlapping treatment of edges which would lead to prolonged drying times. A cork floor treated with Osmo Polyx-Oil Tints will get a robust, elastic and wear-resistant surface which will harden further over 2-3 weeks. Due to the extreme absorption power of this highly elastic, natural, material we recommend the following procedure:

  1. Apply first coat very thinly with an Osmo Double Blade Scraper, or other suitable applicator for cork floors. For small projects, an Osmo Soft Tip Brush can be used
  2. Polyx-Oil Tints should immediately absorb into the surface
  3. Leave to dry for at least 24 hours
  4. Apply second coat, again very thinly
  5. Remove excess with cloth immediately
  6. Leave to dry for at least 24 hours

Regular Cleaning

For daily maintenance a duster, mop or vacuum cleaner will be sufficient. For commercial premises, an electric floor polisher can be used.

For optimal cleaning of floors treated with Osmo Polyx Oil Tints, we recommend the Osmo Floor Maintenance Kit.

For regular cleaning, we recommend using Osmo Wash and Care or Osmo Spray Cleaner.

Deep Cleaning

For stubborn scuffs and stains, we recommend Osmo Liquid Wax Cleaner or Osmo Intensive Cleaner.

Please Note: Oiled or waxed surfaces should not be cleaned with a steam cleaner or steam mop as this degrades the performance of the finish.

Renovation

For renovation, simply re-apply a thin coat of Osmo Polyx Oil Tints to worn areas. No sanding is required, and no removal of a previous Polyx Oil finish. No repair marks will be visible if applied thinly and appropriately.

Please Note: If the original area was treated with Polyx Oil Tints, then over-coated with a clear coat of Osmo Polyx Oil, it may only be the top coat that has been worn or damaged. In this instance, simply re-apply a thin coat of clear Osmo Polyx Oil to the damaged areas.

If the damage runs deeper to the coloured finish or the wood then both products will be required.

How do I know what is the best colour for my floor?

Colours can be difficult when looking at screens. It is also important to remember that each colour will look slightly different on each timber, even when using on the same species as the grain depth and porosity will always differ

Each of the Polyx Oil Tints are available in sample sizes to allow you to test the colours on your timber before going ahead with the larger scale project. You can get in touch by calling us on 01303 213838 to discuss your options.

Love this colour - Amber
I wanted a warm oak colour for an old Ikea Ekenaset chair I bought on Ebay. After taking the chair apart and sanding all the original colour off the wood frame, I didn't want to leave it blonde wood, so ordered a couple of samples of Osmo from Wood Finishes Direct. I like the Amber colour (3072) as I didn't want any yellow in the stain. It has come out really well and I used one coat of the Amber stain with 2 coats of Osmo PolyX Oil semi-matt over the top. With new light covers from Poland (Soferia) the chair looks actually better than the original imo :-)

Use carefully to avoid runs but dries a lovely honey finish
Used on a new pine door which gave slight sheen which I wasn’t looking for.(my fault not the product) However also used on a dipped old pine door which was more absorbent and door went a rich deep honey with no sheen (one coat only)

Quality of the oil is close to the level of darkness to match light oak door liners to the darker oat doors

Ideal to cover scratches and worn areas
I used this to refresh my wood flooring which had some pa tches where the original coloured varnish had worn, and multiple small scratches. This oil goes a long way and the small tin did the job perfectly. Once completely dry I was able to use my normal polish and the f.loor looks nas good as new. T.hanks. fantastic product.
