Ensure that wood to be painted is clean, dry and free from traces of dust, dirt or any other surface contaminants.

New Wood

  1. Planed or new timber should be sanded to a fine level, finishing with 240 grade paper and cleaned, all wood dust and other debris removed before further applications
  2. Coat all knots with two applications of Mylands white or patent knotting

Existing Paint Finishes

  1. Remove all loose and flaking paint work
  2. Do not apply over waxed surfaces unless all the wax has been removed
  3. If the surface is in poor condition, remove the existing paint and follow the New Wood process as stated above
  4. For surfaces in good condition, degrease thoroughly with a suitable detergent, like sugar soap, and wipe the cleaned surface with a clean cloth, damp and fresh water
  5. Rub down the surface with a medium to fine grade sand paper, max 240 grit sandpaper. Clean and remove all dust and debris from the surface. Fill and prime where necessary making good any repairs
  6. Sand and apply at least one coat of Mylands Plant Based Multi Surface Primer and Undercoat
  7. Apply two generous coats of topcoat in low direct sunlit areas. South and West facing aspects, apply three top coats

Always perform a test area before starting any project to judge the suitability, effectiveness and finish of the product.

The substrate and air temperature should be 8-10°C or above for application and during cure. Make sure the moisture content of the wood is below 15% before coating. Damp or rotting wood should never be painted. This will result in flaking and general breakdown quite quickly.

  • Stir well before use
  • Use Mylands or other a high-quality synthetic brush for the best finish
  • Wash new brushes in clean water
  • Avoid drips and splashes by not overloading the brush and apply the finished stroke always in the same direction and keep a wet edge on the paint, within as confined an area as possible
  • Do not go back and touch up the paint if it has started to skin or dry
  • Recoat in 3 - 4 hours
  • Light and careful intercoat sanding will flatten the surface giving a better base for subsequent coats
  • Always remove fine dust before re applying

Aftercare

Aftercare

Back

The surface will give up to ten years protection in perfect conditions and fully maintained. This means cleaning off any dirt a few times a year and applying another coat of paint every three years.

All paints' pigment will fade a little in direct sunlight. Don't paint on to decking or other completely flat surfaces. Make sure sanding debris doesn't land on the wet paint, i.e. don't sand areas near to where you have just applied wet paint.

Takes 4-5 coats
Took 4-5 coats to get the coverage I wanted but the silk is very shiny and the colour depth is great.
