Overview

Overview

Back

Morrells Wax Filler Sticks have been specifically formulated to repair small imperfections that may only become visible after the first coat of lacquer or varnish has been applied. However, they can also be used successfully prior to the first coat of lacquer or varnish being applied, filling nail holes and smaller cracks and splits.

Each pack contains 2 wax filler sticks, measuring approximately 6cm x 2.5cm x 1.5cm.

Preparation

Preparation

Back

Ensure that areas to be filled with Morrells Wax Filler Sticks are clean, dry and free from dust, dirt and any other surface contaminants. If possible, roughen or scratch the inside of the area to be filled so that the wax has a better key to adhere to.

Application

Application

Back

Always do a test area before starting any project to assess performance and end result. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the pack at all times.

There are 2 main ways that wax filler sticks can be softened / melted so that they can be used to fill the damaged area. Before handling the filler stick, ensure that hands are clean and dry, as wax sticks easily pick up any dirt on the hands and this may discolour the wax.

Method 1

  1. Scrape off slithers of wax with a filler knife or other sharp-edged object
  2. Push wax into the hole or damaged area to be filled with a plastic scraper or card
  3. Warm with a hair dryer so that the wax softens and sinks into the repair area
  4. Scrape off any excess from the surface or the surrounding areas with a plastic scraper, taking care not to damage the wood or finish around the repair area

Please Note: If heating the wax in situ of the repair with a hair dryer, take care to ensure that the hair dryer isn't set too hot or used too close to the surface that it damages, melts or burns the wood or the wood finish around the repair area.

Method 2

  1. Using an old mug, bowl or other heat-proof container, cut off the required amount of Wax Filler Stick with a filler knife, and place into a container
  2. Put the container into a saucepan of hot water to melt the wax
  3. Apply the melted wax to the repair area with plastic scraper taking care not to damage the wood or finish around the repair area

Whichever method you choose, ensure that excess amounts of wax are removed and the surface is left smooth and flat. 320 grit paper can be used for this process.

Finishing

Finishing

Back

Once Morrells Wax Filler Sticks have dried, an appropriate wood stain, such as Morrells Light Fast Wood Stain, a Morrells wood lacquer or other suitable lacquer or varnish can then be applied.

Amazing
These wax sticks are exactly what I needed. Was surprised at how well they worked to be honest as I wasn’t putting much hope on them achieving what I needed, however they exceeded my expectations

Good product
Treated badly cracked thwarts with this. Needed to melt the wax into some white spirit to make a cream that could be applied with a putty knife and then buffed up the next day. Did a great job but was a bit of a fiddle getting the wax/solvent ratio just right. Colour match was perfect, so I didn't even have to blend different coloured sticks together.

I used these wax filler sticks to fill in a gap under a wood threshold, caused by the adjoining wood floor being uneven I needed to mix three colours to find a close match with the threshold
This product did the job, although I had to buy several colours and mix them to get a good match, so was expensive for such a small amount needed. I think this company should supply sample packs to help with colour matching as the colours never look the same online as they do in reality. Also, if there is a small job where several colours need to be mixed, the cost would be more reasonable if the packs were smaller.

Easy to use wax
Good quality product that is straight forward to use. The wax covered up a split in an oak dining table very successfully, the wax was mixed with a previously purchased light oak wax together the match of the oak was excellent.

Great match
I need a little bit of wood filler before applying wood protection to my oak doors. This stuff I'd brilliant, matches perfect and easy to use.

Haven't used it yet
Needed to fill in this review to be able to submit the others, but I haven't used it yet, so who knows!

Hard to choose correct shade and difficult to apply in small areas
I scraped and heated this product but found it difficult to use in small enough amounts. I ended up buying Liberon crayons, which for someone of my abilities were easier to apply. They also came in three shades per pack so easier to match shades

A note from us...
Hello Mr Jeffery,

The wax filler sticks can be a little tricky to use but once you get a feel for it it can be an effective filler for fine scratches and dents. I am please you were able to complete your project in the end and if there is anything that I can do to help please do feel free to get in touch.

Kind Regards Samantha.

Fine for small jobs Seems to be compatible with Danish Oil Touch wood!
The sticks are pretty thin and short but work fine.Perhaps better for smaller jobs where 'using the stub of the pencil' won't get ridiculous too quickly.I'd personally prefer 1 larger block to 3(?) small sticks as I apply the stuff firmly and quickly cross-grain like an eraser then buff with the grain using a cloth on a flat block.
