Manns Trade Extra Tough Pro Floor Varnish

Manns Trade Extra Tough Pro Floor Varnish offers enhanced performance characteristics compared with single-component polyurethane floor varnish systems. Its cross-linking polyurethane technology produces a clear, ultra durable finish that is perfect for demanding commercial and domestic environments including entrance hallways, corridors, kitchens, hospitals, care homes, schools, restaurants, offices, shops and hotels.

With anti-bacterial properties, it also offers protection against E-coli, MRSA, Salmonella, Listeria and other harmful bacterial strains with a 99% kill rate within 24 hours, making it ideal for areas where germs and bacteria need to be controlled.

Please Note: This product is not suitable for use in areas of high humidity, condensation or where regular contact with water is likely such as bathrooms, shower rooms or swimming pool areas.

Ensure that floors to be varnished are clean, dry and free of dust, dirt and other surface contaminants.

1. Previous finishes must be completely removed back to bare wood by sanding or with a paint / varnish remover
2. Fill any gaps or splits in the floor surface with Manns Trade Mix and Fill or other suitable wood filler
3. Final sand should be with a 120 to 150 grit sandpaper to achieve a smooth, uniform surface for varnishing
4. Take care to remove all traces of sanding dust by dry sweeping with a mop, broom or by using a vacuum cleaner

Floor Staining

If desired, floors can be stained prior to varnishing. For softwood floors such as pine, consider Manns Classic Pine Stain. For hardwood floors such as Oak, consider Manns Classic Oak Stain. If a solvent-based or light-fast floor stain is required, use Manns Trade Light Fast Wood Stain.

Applying Manns Trade Extra Tough Pro Floor Varnish

Always do a test area before starting any project to assess product suitability and final finish. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the container at all times. Stir the varnish thoroughly before and periodically during use.

Catalyst Mixing Guidelines

Manns Trade Extra Tough Pro Floor Varnish is very versatile and easy to use. It comes supplied with enough hardener / catalyst for the varnish. Although the catalyst is required to achieve the strongest and most durable finish, it adds around 5% strength to the final finish.

Mix 9 parts lacquer to 1 part catalyst by volume and mix well prior to use. The catalysed lacquer should be used within 5 hours of mixing.

An alternative method of measuring the amount of catalyst to floor varnish is to measure the height of the liquid in the bottle of hardener and varnish, and to mark the containers with a permanent marker pen in increments of perhaps a quarter. By doing this, it's easy to pour 1 quarter, half or three quarters of the varnish as required with the correct amount of hardener. The amount of hardener added to the varnish does not have to be precise down to the exact millilitre. If a little too much or too little is added, it will not have a negative effect on the final finish.

If not using a dedicated primer, 3 coats of Manns Extra Tough Pro Floor Varnish is recommended. The first coat can be applied as a base coat without the hardener. The hardener can then be added for the second and third coats.

Application

Optimum application of this varnish is achieved between 18°C and 22°C with good air movement and ventilation. Floors varnished with Manns Trade Extra Tough Pro Floor Varnish should not be subjected to environments with temperatures of less than 2°C.

1. For best results, apply Manns Extra Tough Pro Floor Varnish using a microfibre roller or paint pad
2. Apply evenly, making smooth passes with the roller or pad, predominantly along the grain taking care to avoid 'pooling'
3. The approximate single coat coverage of the lacquer is 8m² per litre. This however is dependent on the method of application, porosity of the timber and the desired finish
4. Leave adequate time between coats, de-nibbing between coats to aid adhesion

Some Points of Note:

• Do not apply more than 3 coats of polyurethane floor varnish in one day
• Do not overcoat with solvent-based products
• Avoid contact with iron, copper, zinc, aluminum and platinum as these can attack the aqueous polymer
• When coating darker timbers, such as Walnut, Mahogany or Teak, slight bleaching may occur
• Water-based products should have nominated finishing equipment
• Excessive coating weights can lead to cracking or lifting
• Do not subject floors to heavy foot traffic, place furniture or move furniture across the floor surface for at least 72 hours after application
• Do not place mats or rugs on the newly varnished floor surface for at least 5 days after application, as this will impede final cure
• The use of good quality entrance mats and furniture pads after this time is recommended to avoid damage to the finish

Cleaning Equipment

Brushes and equipment should be cleaned immediately after use with warm, soapy water and wiped dry with a dry cloth.

Regular Cleaning

Cleaning of freshly varnished floors should be avoided until the lacquer has reached full cure, approximately 7 days after application. Floors should be dry swept or vacuumed regularly to avoid dust and grit build up, as this can have an abrasive effect on the final finish.

Deep Cleaning

Manns Trade Extra Tough Pro Floor Varnish can be periodically cleaned with a dedicated floor surface cleaner such as Woodleys Wood Surface Cleaner and a damp (not wet) lint-free cloth or mop.

Please Note: Varnished floors should never be washed with large quantities of water or with household and cleaners as these can degrade the finish over time.
