Preparation

Preparation

Back

Ensure surfaces to be treated are clean, dry and free from surface contaminates. All surface coatings such as paint, varnish and varnish-like wood stains must be removed back to bare wood.

New Wood and Joinery

  1. Ensure that new wood and joinery has been sanded with a 120-150 grit abrasive
  2. Remove all traces of sanding dust with a slightly damp cloth or vacuum
  3. Treat new wood with a suitable exterior wood preservative
  4. Allow the wood preservative to dry to the specified time before applying this product

Previously Oiled Wood and Joinery

  1. Previously oiled exterior wood and joinery should be lightly sanded
  2. Remove all traces of sanding dust
  3. Any areas affected by fungal growth, algae or moss should be treated with a suitable mould and mildew cleaner
  4. Fill any gaps or splits in the wood with a suitable exterior wood filler
  5. Pre-treat wood with a suitable clear or coloured wood preservative if the timber hasn't been treated for some time
  6. Allow the wood preservative to dry to the specified time before applying Exterior High Build Wood Oil

Please Note: Dense exotic hardwoods that contain a high concentration of natural oils may require a rub down with methylated spirit before oiling to aid penetration of this product.

Application

Application

Back

Always do a test area before starting any project to assess product suitability and final finish. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times. Stir thoroughly before and during application.

  1. Apply thinly with a good quality blend brush in the direction of the wood grain
  2. Remove any excess oil immediately with a clean, lint free cloth
  3. Allow 4-6 hours to dry before applying a second coat (although overnight drying is recommended)
  4. Sand or denib lightly with a 120-180 grit abrasive, such as Woodleys Finishing Pad
  5. Remove all traces of sanding dust with a vacuum or dry, lint-free cloth
  6. Apply the second coat in the same way as the first

Regular Cleaning

Wood treated with Fiddes Exterior Wood Oil can be brushed with a stiff broom or brush from time to time to remove surface dirt and debris.

For more stubborn dirt and grime or traces of mould or algae, use a suitable exterior wood cleaner.

Maintenance

If the oil finish is looking tired or is loosing its ability to repel water, a maintenance coat can be easily applied.

  1. Rub down the surface with a stiff brush or lightly sand to remove surface dirt and debris
  2. Treat any areas where biological matter such as mould and algae are present
  3. Apply a thin maintenance coat and wipe off any excess
  4. For wood that hasn't been maintained for an extended period of time, a second thin coat may be required

Fiddles high build wood oil
The benchmark had gone grey with sun and rain damage, because it had been painted with yachts varnished. Total rub down and painted three coats of wood oil as per tin instructions. Fantastic finish, for bench.

Brings out the natural colour of the wood
Bought this for the external wood of our extension, which has oak bifold doors and windows. It's been 15 years since they were put in, so were looking pretty grey and ropey in places, especially along the bottoms. Used a sander to get most of it back to bare wood and applied 3 coats as recommended - looks great now. Remains to be seen for how long...

Not used this product but glad I did
Never sure how good a new product to me will be but having now used I’m very happy with the result & would have no hesitation using on other wood surfaces.

Looks good on oak
Decided I wanted to try this as was recommended by a work colleague who uses it on his sheds. So bought a smaller tin of this and applied it to of all things, skirting boards. Skirting boards I hear you say, yeah! Why not, they are oak and although go inside the house, they still look good. I don’t suppose they will get wet (unless the radiator starts leaking, but who cares, I’m happy with the results, although to a while to dry (4-6 hours on the tin) or prefably overnight, but I wasn’t in a rush.

Excellent product,
Easy to apply and very effective. After a couple of weeks it has a strong glossy finish on previously oiled timber. It is however rather expensive.

Looks to be good…
Time will tell, but our row of garage doors (Douglas fir) are finally looking good. And that’s pleasing after years of struggling with other (very popular) oil finishes that haven’t lasted at all! I’m hoping that we’ve found a finish that I can recommend.

Excellent product
I used this on my oak front door and it really brought out the grain and quality of the wood. Very easy to put on, not at all sticky or 'cloggy'. Worth the money and I would definitely buy it again.
