Overview
Manns Extra Tough Primer is perfect for use on any interior wood including furniture, flooring, doors, skirting, architraves and more. It helps to fill slight imperfections in the wood, giving a smoother finish with better adhesion than using just varnish or lacquer alone.
Designed for use as a basecoat for the range of Manns interior and floor varnishes including Manns Extra Tough Floor Varnish and Manns Extra Tough Interior Varnish.
Please note: For resinous softwoods such as new pine, naturally oily hardwoods and other problematic timbers, we recommend the use of Manns Trade Intense Primer to seal the wood and prevent issues with the top-coat.
Preparation
Surfaces to be coated with Manns Extra Tough Primer should be clean, dry and free from all surface contaminants such as dust, dirt and grease.
- Fill any gaps or imperfections in the wood with a suitable wood filler
- Sand the wood to the correct grit, usually around 120 to 180 grit depending on project
- Vacuum all traces of sanding dust and if required, clean / degrease the timber with an uncoloured (white) cloth dampened with methylated or white spirit
Application
Always do a test area before starting any project to test product suitability and final finish. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the container at all times. Manns Extra Tough Primer is ready for use from the container and does not require thinning.
Please Note: Water-based primers for wood should not be used in areas of high humidity or condensation. Optimum application is achieved between 18°C and 22°C with good air movement and ventilation.
- Apply with a good quality synthetic paint brush or microfibre roller
- Once dry, this product can be over-coated without the need for sanding / de-nibbing
Applying Manns Extra Tough Primer over water-based stains
Care should be taken when applying this product over water-based wood stains. For the first coat of primer, apply gently with a brush or roller, in the direction of the wood grain, with just 1 or 2 strokes. Avoid heavy brushing or rolling in multiple directions as this may dislodge or drag the stain. Ones the first coat of primer has fully dried, there is no longer a concern with disturbing the stain. This is not an issue when applying water-based primers or varnishes over solvent-based stains.
Cleaning Equipment
Brushes and equipment should be cleaned immediately after use with warm, soapy water and wiped dry with a cloth.

Once dry, Manns Extra Tough Primer can be coated with any of the Manns Extra Tough range of varnishes or lacquers:
