Overview

Overview

Back

Liberon Decking Oil feeds, protects and enhances the natural beauty of old and new decking boards. It is perfect for reviving and restoring colour to weathered and greying decking, and is also suitable for use on garden fences, sheds, garden gates and hot tub surrounds.

Preparation

Preparation

Back

Ensure that decking is clean, dry and free from dust, dirt and any other surface contaminants prior to applying Liberon Decking Oil.

  • Old 'coating' type products such as paints, varnishes and stains must be removed by stripping back to bare wood
  • If sanding, use a 120-150 grit sandpaper and remove all traces of sanding dust
  • Old wooden decking should be cleaned with a suitable decking cleaner, and allowed to fully dry, prior to oiling
  • Sweep decking with a stiff broom or brush to remove all surface dirt and debris prior to oiling

Please note: Decking made from oily or resinous timbers such as Massaranduba, Bangkirai, Garapa, Larch and Douglas Fir usually require a period of 'weathering' prior to applying a decking treatment. Check the decking supplier / manufacturer's guidance on how long decking should be allowed to weather before applying a decking treatment.

Application

Application

Back

Always do a test area before starting any project, to assess product suitability and final finish. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times.

Softwood Decking:

  1. Stir well before and periodically during use.
  2. Apply a generous coat of Liberon Decking Oil with a good quality decking brush or microfibre roller
  3. Allow to penetrate for 15 to 30 minutes, then apply the second coat without waiting for the first to dry
  4. Apply further coats of decking oil, until the timber no longer absorbs the oil
  5. Wipe any excess with a lint-free cotton cloth
  6. Allow to dry for 24 before using the decking

Hardwood Decking:

  1. For best results, apply the oil very thinly with a lint-free cloth
  2. It is essential that any excess oil on the surface is wiped off thoroughly with a clean cloth

Please note: The type and age of timber can have a dramatic impact on how much decking oil the wood needs. As an example, softwood decking that is old will likely require more oil than a relatively new hardwood decking that still retains a fair amount of natural oil.

To test how much oil your decking needs, apply one coat, then apply a droplet of oil in a corner. If the droplet of oil soaks into the wood then a further coat can be applied. Repeat this process until the droplet of oil sits as a bead on the surface of the wood and no longer soaks in to the timber. This is an indication that the timber has absorbed as much oil as possible and doesn't require any more.

Regular Cleaning

To preserve the look and performance of the oiled finish for longer, it is recommended that decked areas are swept with a stiff broom on a regular basis. This is to remove any loose leaves, dirt and other organic matter that can settle on the deck and in the grooves, which can degrade or damage the finish and decking timbers over time.

Deep Cleaning

For heavily soiled decks or decking affected by mould, mildew and grime, clean with Liberon Tough Deck Clean and Revive.

Maintenance

Apply 1 or 2 coats of Liberon Decking Oil once yearly as part of a routine maintenance schedule, to avoid decking finishes looking tired and worn.

On high traffic areas, re-apply 1 or 2 coats of Decking Oil as and when required, following the Preparation and Application instructions above.

First class product
I ordered this Liberon Decking Oil on the advice of my gardener who said it was a first class product. The old decking looks revived and well presented. I would fully recommend this product.

Does what it says on the tin
Covers like a coloured varnish but soaked in well. I was getting worried about my decking it was looking worse for ware. This really brought it up like new. Don’t forget you have to put some real work cleaning it up before you apply it but it’s definitely worth it.
