Dulux Trade Diamond Glaze Varnish is ideal for finishing interior wooden floors, doors and a wide range of other high wear interior wooden surfaces, including kitchen cabinets and wood furniture.

Preparation

Preparation

Back

For the best results, ensure surfaces to be varnished are sound, clean and dry.

New or Bare Wood

  1. New or bare wood should be sanded in the direction of the wood grain to remove any surface imperfections
  2. Take care to remove all traces of sanding dust with a vacuum cleaner or damp, lint-free cloth
  3. Seal new or bare wood by applying one coat of Clear Gloss Diamond Glaze Clear Varnish to help reduce variations in absorbency, which can lead to differences in colour and sheen
  4. Wood stains or dyes may be used prior to applying Dulux Diamond Glaze Varnish. It is recommended that a water-based stain be used

Previously Treated Wood

  1. All traces of grease, wax and polish must be completely removed prior to applying Diamond Glaze Varnish
  2. Coated surfaces in good condition should be sanded back to provide a good surface key and final finish
  3. Do not use wood dyes or stains over previous coatings as the adhesion will be poor
  4. Special precautions should be taken during surface preparation of pre-1970s painted surfaces as they may contain harmful lead
  5. Where the existing coating is defective (cracking, peeling, flaking) it must be completely removed and the surface prepared as described for New or Bare Wood above

Application

Application

Back

Always do a test area before starting any project to test product suitability and final finish. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times.

Do not use below 10°C or in areas of high humidity or condensation. This product is not suitable for spray application.

Stir thoroughly before and during application, taking care not to use a whipping motion which will introduce air to the varnish and cause foaming when applied.

  1. Apply the varnish with a synthetic brush or short pile mohair roller only
  2. Apply 2-3 coats of varnish, evenly and consistently, to keep the 'wet edge' and finish off along the grain
  3. When re-coating, allow at least 2 hours between coats
  4. Rub down lightly (denib) along the grain between coats using a fine grade adhesive paper or denibbing pad

Aftercare

Aftercare

Back

Surfaces coated with Dulux Trade Diamond Glaze Varnish can be cleaned by using a vacuum cleaner, dry microfibre cloth or mop or by wiping the surface with a slightly damp lint-free cloth or mop. For more stubborn stains and marks we recommend using a dedicated, pH balanced wood cleaner.

Please note: Wooden floors and other surfaces should never be cleaned with copious amounts of water. The use of harsh household detergents and cleaners should also be avoided as these can degrade or strip the finish over time. Steam cleaners should never be used on wooden floors as the high temperature and pressure steam can damage the floor finish, warp or split the wood.

5 litres lasted 10 years!
Used on wooden floors both hard and softwood, when I moved into the house ten years ago. Have re- varnished occasionally, but my first 5 litre tin ran out towards the end of the winter lockdown, so purchased more.

Usually a tough product, hope it performs this time!
Easy to apply to previously varnished soft wood floor boards which I sanded to give a key for the new coating. I hope it is a long lasting finish. Just slightly concerned that it tends to go milky if water spilt on it but it clears afterwards. I used this same product years ago and don’t remember this happening but I do remember it lasting extremely well. However, it’s been in use on the kitchen floor for a couple of months now and so far so good. Looking good!

An excellent product with a very good finish
This product was recommended to me by a professional painter & decorator. Whilst on the expensive side it is really worth it. I used it to varnish eight doors and staircase balustrade. Easy to apply and satisfactorily covered in one coat.

Great varnish, goes on easily Beware of raising the grain, apply thin layer then sand sand sand before the next coat!
Lovely, it's been on since september and no marks yet. Glad I spent the money.

Great product with a lovely finish
This is a great varnish that leaves a tough excellent finish. It really makes the most of any wood and brings out the grain well.

Would never use again
We have beautiful Iroko worktops in our kitchen. Having seen these worktops with a sheen rather than our Matt finish we searched the web and asked for advice as to suitability and arrived at this product. We followed the instructions giving our worktops a robust sanding. We applied three thin coats to our worktops over a twelve hour period ensuring the previous coat was touch dry before commencing again. Going to bed that night the finish looked superb, we were delighted. However the following lunchtime I spilt some water on the worktop which went cloudy. Trying to mop up the water the varnish surface started lifting off in sheets. Thinking it might have just been this one area we dripped a small amount of water on another section of the wood and exactly the same thing happened when mopping up the water. What followed was nearly twelve hours working into the early hours of the night scrapping and sanding to remove the remaining varnish. The process almost destroyed the appearance of our Iroko worktops. Now some four months on from the disaster we are still in the process of sanding and oiling the wood to bring it back to its previous good condition. We might have been unlucky but we would never use this product again and have returned to our previous product.

A note from us...
Good Afternoon,

Thank you for taking the time review the product.

I am sorry to hear that your project did not turn out as expected, I suspect this may be due to the high oil content in dense hardwoods such as Iroko.

Whilst the he Dulux Diamon Glaze varnish is a very popular product, Iroko tends to be naturally high in oil which in turn can cause adhesion issues if varnishes are applied. We recommend to degrease the wood with methylated spirits to allow varnish to adhere or oil to absorb. Additionally, if the varnish has not yet cured, if moisture gets in between the finish, this can cause a milky bloom to appear and it can take a while for the trapped moisture to evaporate.

After degreasing the wood, we often recommend application of very thin oils such as Osmo Wood Wax Finish Extra Thin 1101 which are especially designed for wood types such as iroko to penetrate into the grain and protect the wood without adhesion issues. Test areas also help ascertain the absorption of the product.

Kind Regards,

Ida
