Cuprinol Wood Preserver Clear is a clear, multi-purpose, water-based wood preservative for interior and exterior use. Protects against rot, decay, mould and blue-staining fungi. Can be used as a pre-treatment prior to finishing with any compatible interior or exterior protective wood finishes.

Please Note: This is a replacement for the old solvent-based formula.

Preparation

Preparation

Ensure that surfaces to be treated are clean, dry and free from surface dirt, loose debris and any organic matter, including mould, mildew, algae and fungi.

Bare or New Timber

  • Remove any surface biological growth, dirt and debris with a stiff brush, broom or scraper
  • Areas affected by mould and algae should be treated with a suitable garden cleaner
  • All rotten timber must be cut out and replaced
  • If the wood surface is looking worn or has greyed from sun damage and the effects of weathering, use a suitable reviver or restorer
  • Any holes, gaps or splits in the surface of the wood can be filled with Cuprinol All Purpose Wood Filler, Cuprinol Ultra Tough Wood Filler or other suitable wood filler

Previously Coated Timber

Existing surface coatings such as paint or varnish must be fully removed back to bare wood before using Cuprinol Wood Preserver, either by sanding or using a suitable wood stripper.

Application

Application

Back

Always do a test area before starting any project to assess product suitability and finish. Follow the manufacturers instructions on the container at all times.

  1. Apply 2 coats of Cuprinol Wood Preserver with a suitable brush
  2. Leave the first coat to soak in before applying the second but reapply before the first is fully dry (typically 2-6 hours)
  3. Leave 16 hours for the second coat to dry before painting, staining or varnishing. Do not spray
  4. For dip application, dip the timber for at least 3 minutes if practical

Please Note: The application of this product may cause darkening of some timbers. To ensure thorough protection, treat all surfaces, and apply to any surfaces cut after treatment.

After drying, wood glues, fillers, mastics and knotting solutions can be used on the timber as normal. Treated wood should be allowed to dry for 6-8 weeks before laying plastic floor coverings, rubber backed carpets or underlay, hanging vinyl wallpaper or using mastics.

Finishing

Finishing

Back

Once fully dry, overcoat Cuprinol Wood Preserver Clear with a Cuprinol wood oil, Cuprinol wood stain or other suitable topcoat, such as paint, stain or varnish.

Is the Cuprinol Clear Preserver the best thing to use on mahogany window frames?

Although this product would be suitable for this type of project, it is wax-free, meaning that it is not suitable as a standalone treatment. You will need to give the preserver a topcoat to help lock in the preservative and give the timber weathering protection. Give our Woodcare Experts a call on 01303 213838 to explore your options.

Easy to apply and good coverage
Slightly darkened the colour of our wooden gates. It did bleach out the first year because l didn’t apply a water repellant wood stain top coat .After reapplying another coat of Wood Preserver with a top coat of water repellent the results have been excellent.

Easy to use
Basic preservative product good for wildlife (bird boxes etc). Good base layer for a water & wax based protector layer. Easily a,bsorbed into the timber, especially first layer on Rough sawn wood. Leaves the timber clear and dries quickly too.

Very good wood preservative Soaks into bare wood easily
A clear preservative leaves the wood slightly darker but still see all the wood grain.

Old School customer service
Do you remember the olden days when you went to buy something and the shop knew their products. They could give advice and knew what they were talking about. This is that place not like a superstore where they know nothing and read the label back to you when you ask them a question. This place has Fantastic knowledgeable staff who really do know their products and give great advice on how to use it. Totally fantastic service.

Expensive, but you get what you pay for to have it do as it says on the tin!
I use this on decking and an ornamental wooden bridge and both show no sign of rot or deterioration. Use it each year and will continue to do so. Will be purchasing again.
