Preparation

Preparation

Back

Before application, ensure the timber is clean, dry and free from dust, grease, resin and any loose or unstable coatings.

  • Any existing cracked, peeling or flaking varnish or paint must be completely removed back to a sound surface before application
  • Previously coated surfaces that are stable and intact should be lightly sanded to create a key for adhesion
  • Bare timber should be sanded with around 120 grit Sandpaper to create a smooth and evenly prepared surface
  • Weathered or grey timber should be cleaned and restored prior to coating to achieve a uniform finish
  • Slightly round off sharp edges and corners to allow the varnish film to form evenly and reduce the risk of premature wear
  • Avoid using steel wool as fine metal fragments can remain in the timber and may cause staining when exposed to moisture
  • Remove all sanding dust thoroughly before application to ensure an even, consistent finish

Application

Application

Back

Before starting your project, always carry out a small test application on an inconspicuous area. This allows you to check compatibility, absorption and final appearance on your specific timber. Ensure conditions are suitable for application and always follow the instructions provided on the product container.

  1. Stir thoroughly before use to ensure an even consistency throughout the product. Ciranova Exterior Wood Varnish is ready to use and should not be diluted.
  2. Apply in thin, even coats using a quality Brush or a suitable Roller for larger areas. Work in the direction of the wood grain and avoid over-applying, as excessively thick coats can affect drying and finish quality.
  3. Allow sufficient drying time between coats under normal conditions. Drying times may vary depending on temperature, humidity and ventilation.
  4. Once dry, lightly sand between coats using a fine abrasive (around 120 grit). This improves adhesion and helps create a smoother, more professional finish. Remove all sanding dust before applying the next coat.
  5. Apply a total of 3 coats to exterior woodwork to build a durable, protective film capable of withstanding weather exposure.
  6. Do not apply in damp conditions, during rain, or when temperatures are excessively low or high, as this can affect drying, adhesion and overall performance.

Aftercare

Back

Ciranova Exterior Wood Varnish is designed to be self-renovating, meaning that when the coating begins to show signs of wear, it can be refreshed without the need for complete stripping.

To maintain protection and appearance:

  • Lightly sand the existing surface using approximately 120-grit sandpaper to provide a key.
  • Remove all sanding dust thoroughly.
  • Apply two fresh coats to restore protection and maintain durability.

Regular inspection of exterior woodwork is recommended, particularly on exposed elevations. Early maintenance helps extend the lifespan of the finish and prevents more extensive refurbishment later.

What is Ciranova Exterior Wood Varnish used for?

Ciranova Exterior Wood Varnish is a water-based varnish designed to protect exterior woodwork such as doors, window frames, cladding and other vertical joinery. It provides a durable, high-resistance finish with added UV protection.

How many coats should I apply?

For exterior woodwork, apply 3 thin, even coats to build a durable protective film. Light sanding between coats is recommended to improve adhesion and finish quality.

How long should I leave between coats?

Allow approximately 3 hours between coats under normal conditions. Drying times may vary depending on temperature, humidity and ventilation.

How long does it take to fully dry?

The varnish dries to the core in approximately 48 hours. Cooler temperatures or high humidity may extend drying times.

What is the coverage rate?

Coverage is approximately 12m² per litre per coat, depending on timber type, porosity and application method.

Do I need to dilute the varnish?

No. Ciranova Exterior Wood Varnish is ready to use and should not be diluted.

Can it be maintained without stripping?

Yes. The varnish is self-renovating. When the surface begins to show signs of wear, lightly sand with around 120-grit sandpaper, remove dust and apply two maintenance coats to refresh protection.

Can I apply it with a roller?

Yes. It can be applied using a brush or a suitable roller, making it practical for both smaller joinery and larger surface areas.
