Overview

Overview

Back

Barrettine Anti-Slip Decking Oil is a premium quality, anti-slip, decking oil top coat, which incorporates anti-slip technology to improve grip on decking, wooden steps and other wood surfaces where improved grip is desirable, such as play frames.

Please Note: This product is an anti-slip top coat for decking oils and is not suitable for use as a stand-alone product. It is not intended for use in areas of constant high humidity, wet or damp areas such as shower rooms and around swimming pools.

Preparation

Preparation

Back

Decked areas to be treated should be clean, dry and free from dirt, debris and other surface contaminates.

New Decking Preparation

For all bare wood decking including tanalised, pressure treated and preservative impregnated decking timbers.

New Softwood Decking

  1. Sweep the decking with a stiff broom to remove all traces of surface dirt and debris
  2. Use a suitable decking cleaner if required before oiling
  3. Any open end grain can be sealed with Barrettine End Grain Preserver
  4. Wipe down the surface with a lint-free cloth dampened with white spirit to remove any surface resins
  5. For best protection, treat decking with Barrettine Premier Universal Preservative and allow to dry for 24 - 48 hours before applying Anti Slip Decking Oil
  6. If possible, preserve all sides including end grain prior to installation
  7. For preserved timber, it is recommended to apply 2 coats of Barrettine Decking Oil before applying a top coat of Barrettine Anti Slip Decking Oil to give the best level of protection

New Hardwood Decking

New hardwood decking usually requires a period of weathering to allow the surface grain to open up. This allows for better absorption of the decking oil. Check the decking manufacturer's guidance on how long decking should be left to weather before applying a decking treatment.

Old Decking Preparation

  1. Ensure that all 'coating' type finishes such as paints, varnishes and varnish like stains have been fully removed to expose bare wood by either jet washing, sanding or using a dedicated decking stripper and remover. This may require more than one attempt.
  2. If stripping back to bare wood, 2 coats of a decking oil such as Barrettine Decking Oil must be applied before applying Barrettine Anti-Slip Decking Oil
  3. Old oil finishes should be cleaned thoroughly with Barrettine Decking & Patio Cleaner or other suitable decking cleaner
  4. For decking affected by mould, algae or moss, use Barrettine Mould and Mildew Cleaner
  5. Then treat as 'New Decking' above

Application

Application

Back

Always do a test area before beginning any project to assess performance, compatibility and end result. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times.

Do not apply Barrettine Anti Slip Decking Oil if the ambient temperature is below 5°, in wet conditions or if rain is likely within 24 hours of application. Decked areas should be completely dry before application. Stir thoroughly before and periodically during application to ensure a consistent finish.

  1. Decant the decking oil into a paint kettle
  2. Apply an even coat of decking oil to the surface with a wide-bristled brush
  3. Work the oil into the surface of the wood grain
  4. Wipe off any excess oil with a clean, lint-free cloth
  5. Allow to dry for 12 - 24 hours
  6. Leave for 24 - 72 hours, or until completely dry, before subjecting decking to foot traffic

Regular Cleaning

To preserve the look and performance of the oiled finish for longer it is recommended that decked areas are swept with a stiff broom on a regular basis. This is to remove loose leaves, dirt and other organic matter that can settle on the decking boards and in the grooves, which can degrade or damage the finish and decking timbers over time.

Deep Cleaning

Scuff marks, stains, grease and other surface contaminates can normally be cleaned with a decking cleaner. Stubborn marks and stains may require a light sanding and a thin application of Anti Slip Decking Oil to restore the affected area.

Maintenance

If the finish begins to look tired or worn over time, or begins to lose its anti-slip properties, simply apply a fresh coat of Barrettine Anti Slip Decking Oil, following the Preparation and Application instructions above. Renovation is recommended every 6 months, and more often for high traffic areas.

This is a brilliant product
The Barrittine non slip coating for decking is fantastic. I used it after two coats of Barrettine decking oil. It really works well. After using it when wet it still allows you to walk on it with no hint of slipping.
