Bona Traffic HD is one of the world's toughest and fastest drying lacquers for wooden floors exposed to extreme wear, allowing full traffic to be resumed in just 12 hours. Widely used in hotels, restaurants and airports, where maximum durability and a short downtime is essential. It is also recommended for use in schools and nurseries due to its very low indoor emissions.

  • Looking for exceptional durability with an anti-slip finish? Use Bona Traffic HD Anti Slip
  • Require a durable, single-part varnish for domestic environments? Consider Bona Mega Varnish
  • Need a hard wearing varnish suitable for both commercial and domestic areas with a built-in hardener? Use Bona Traffic GO

Preparation

Preparation

Back

Ensure that floors to be varnished are clean, dry and free from all traces of dust, dirt, grit, oil, wax and any other surface contaminates before application.

Preparation of Pre-Varnished Floors

Bona Traffic HD will normally have very good adhesion to pre-varnished flooring, however, it is advisable to check the intercoat adhesion prior to overcoating. To check intercoat adhesion, apply a coat of Bona Traffic HD to a pre-prepared area. Allow the coating to set for 3 days then scratch the treated floor surface gently with a coin. If the Bona Traffic finish stays firmly attached to the surface, the adhesion is satisfactory and the main application can begin.

Preparation of Wax, Oiled or Polished Floors

Floors pre-treated with waxes, polishes or other similar products cannot be overcoated with Bona Traffic HD and should be fully sanded back to bare wood to at least 120 grit, then primed with a suitable wood primer.

Bare Wooden Floors

For bare, freshly sanded floors it is recommended to use a wood primer. Primers help with adhesion between the varnish and floor and can help with the colouration of the final finish.

Product Use
Bona Classic UX Primer A ready-to-use primer for use with the Bona range of varnishes
Bona Natural Primer Designed to preserve the impression of raw, untreated wood
Bona Intense Primer A 100% polyurethane based primer for finishes requiring better adhesion
Bona White Primer A high quality wood primer that creates a 'white-washed' effect on wood flooring
Bona Amber Primer Wood primer for oak and darker tropical species of wood. GreenGuard approved

To stain the floor prior to finishing, consider Bona Craft Oil 2K.

Please note: Allow Bona traffic HD to reach room temperature before use.

Application

Application

Back

Always do a test area before starting any project to assess product suitability and final finish. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the container at all times. To mix smaller quantities of lacquer and hardener, mix the required amounts using the Bona Traffic Mix Bottle. 1 litre of lacquer corresponds to one part hardener, 2 litres to two parts and so on.

Optimal application conditions are between 18-25°C and 30-60% relative air humidity. High or low temperatures and humidity may shorten or lengthen the drying time. Minimum temperature for use is 13°C.

Where a longer drying time is required due to high temperature and/or low humidity, Bona Retarder can be added to the varnish to increase the 'open time' of the product.

Mixing in the Hardener

  1. Add appropriate mix of hardener to the lacquer
  2. Shake immediately for a minimum of 1 minute
  3. Insert the enclosed filter ready for pouring
  4. The mixture of hardener and lacquer should be used directly or at least within 4 hours of mixing

Suitable Bona Applicators

Product Description
Bona Applicator Sleeve 46cm applicator sleeve that is used in conjunction with the Bona Swivel Head Applicator, a specialist floor applicator for professional floor finishers.
Bona Lacquer Roller A synthetic, medium pile roller for the application of Bona varnishes and used in conjunction with the Bona Roller Handle

Application Technique

  1. Apply the lacquer using a suitable Bona applicator, as seen above
  2. Apply with a smooth flowing action, avoiding build up
  3. Always maintain a "wet edge" to avoid any overlaps
  4. Allow 2 - 3 hours between sanding/denibbing or re-coating
  5. Slightly increase drying time after each coat
  6. Apply a further coat in the same manner
  7. If necessary, lightly sand or denib using a fine grade sandpaper before the final coat. This is needed if a previous coat has been allowed longer than 24 hours to dry

Take reasonable precautions with the finish during the first few days after application:

  • Do not cover (use protective sheets) or lay carpets onto the treated area during the first 3 days following application
  • Appropriate protective measures (i.e. felt pads) should be taken for table and chair legs or other objects which could mark the floor
  • Immediately wipe up any water or other liquid spillages and take particular care with flower pots

Floors treated with Bona Traffic HD can be subjected to light foot traffic in 8 hours after final application and ready for full use in 12 hours. Allow at least 3 days for the product to fully cure before laying carpets, rugs and moving furniture.

Regular Cleaning

Lacquered floors should be dry swept or vacuumed on a regular basis to remove surface particles of grit, dirt and small stones that could scratch or mark the surface. Wooden floors should never be saturated with water or cleaned with household detergents or cleaners, as part of a regular cleaning routine, as these could significantly reduce longevity and performance of the floor varnish.

For more thorough cleaning and to remove surface scuffs and other marks, Bona have a range of pH-balanced floor cleaners and mops for the job. For regular cleaning the pre-mixed, ready-to-go formulas provide a quick solution whilst the concentrated products are good for scale of economy and deeper cleaning requirements.

Bona Floor Mops and Floor Cleaners

Product Description
Bona Cleaner Concentrate A concentrated version of Bona Wood Floor Cleaner. Add water to clean up to 2,000 square meters of flooring per liter of concentrate
Bona Wood Floor Spray Mop An easy to use spray mop with changeable microfibre heads and cartridges
Bona Wood Floor Cleaner Spray An everyday floor cleaner in a convenient 1L trigger spray bottle

Bona Traffic HD Renovation

To restore the appearance of Bona Traffic HD that has become dull or covered in minor scratches, the following products can be used.

Product Description
Bona Freshen Up A ready-to-use, maintenance coating to refresh the appearance of Bona Traffic HD
Bona Wood Floor Refresher A durable and protective maintenance coat that is ready-to-use, offering extended protection against wear.
Bona Polish Creates a durable wear layer for previously varnished floors. Available in both a Matt and Gloss finish
Bona Wood Floor Polish A ready-to-use, water-based maintenance coating for previously varnished or painted wooden floors

Back
I have a coffee-coloured floor that has worn down in some areas, can I just use Traffic HD on top?

If its pre-varnished then you could do a test area and an intercoat adhesion test to see if it adheres. If it has gone back to bare wood in some areas, you would need to sand it back and refinish the flooring.

Can Traffic go over the top of Ronseal Diamond Hard Floor Varnish?

Providing that the surface has had the right preparation by giving the area a key and clean, Bona Traffic HD can be used over the top of the Diamond Hard Floor Varnish.

Does this come with the traffic hd hardener or is that purchased separately?

The Bona Traffic HD is a two-part varnish. Both components will arrive together when purchased.

What is best to apply the Bona Traffic HD with, a brush or roller?

We suggest using the Bona Synthetic Lacquer Roller or for larger areas, Bona Applicator Sleeve. These tools are specially designed for the application of the Bona Traffic HD and ensure the correct coverage to provide the best performance. Apply this in a smooth flowing action with the roller piled up, maintaining a wet edge to avoid overlaps. Give the surface 2-3 hours before de-nibbing or recoating. Each coat should be applied in the same manner.

So far so good
I was recommended to choose this product by the Wood Finishes Direct Customer Services team in conjunction with the Bona White Primer. I chose the satin slightly sheeny product. I really like the finish, the floor looks as I'd hoped it would. Only time will tell if it is robust I guess. Our contractor put down 3 coats and it went on smoothly and so far looks great!
