Sikkens Cetol HLS Plus is perfect for use on softwoods, hardwoods, plywood, block board and particle board, claddings, decking, fascias, architraves, timber frames, fences and sheds. Can be used on its own or when applied to joinery such as windows and doors, it is recommended to over-coat with Sikkens Cetol Filter 7 Plus.

This product cannot be used on substrates which have had water-repellent wood preservative or pre-treatments applied, i.e. products that contain wax, oil or silicone. It has been designed for use on smooth wooden surfaces only.

When used as a standalone product, 3 coats are recommended. When used in conjunction with Sikkens Filter 7 Plus, just one coat of Sikkens Cetol HLS Plus should be applied then overcoated with 2 coats of Sikkens Filter 7 Plus

Please Note: This product is mixed to order, so unfortunately cannot be returned. This does not affect your statutory rights.

Preparation

Preparation

Back

Timber to be treated should be clean, dry and free from any dust, dirt, debris and surface coatings such as paint or varnish.

Bare or New Timber

  1. Resinous deposits should be removed with a scraper
  2. Any remaining residues should be removed by wiping the surface with a lint-free cloth dampened with methylated spirits
  3. Allow solvent to evaporate fully before application
  4. Do not use on substrates or wood preservatives which have water-repellent properties, i.e. products or timbers that contain silicone or waxes

Previously Coated Timber

  1. Abrade using a fine grade nylon abrasive pad or a fine grade (P240 or finer) wet or dry silicon carbide abrasive paper, in the direction of the grain, ensuring not to break through the surface coating
  2. Remove all traces of sanding dust
  3. Where there is localised damage, or deterioration has occurred as a result of exposure of the factory coating for longer than 3 months, affected areas should be thoroughly sanded back to a sound substrate

Old Timber

  1. Damaged or decayed timber must be removed and replaced, cutting at least 25mm into sound timber. Make sure the wood is sanded back to a sound substrate.
  2. Continue application using Previously Coated Timer or Bare or New Timber methods as appropriate

Application

Application

Back

Always do a test area before starting any project to assess product suitability and final finish. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times.

Application temperature should not be below 5°C or exceed 30°C and a relative humidity of 85%. Ensure tin is stirred thoroughly before and during application. This product is not suitable for spraying.

As a standalone product, usually for rough sawn timber such as cladding, decking, fascias and soffits, apply 3 coats. For joinery, such as doors and windows, apply as below: -

  1. Apply 1 coat with the ProDec Trade Pro Bristle Blend Brush in a full flowing coat, laying off in the direction of the grain, using the minimum number of brush strokes necessary
  2. Leave to dry for 24 hours
  3. Finish joinery with two coats of Sikkens Cetol Filter 7 Plus
  4. For best results, keep the interval between coats as small as possible, not exceeding 1 month but allowing each coat to dry thoroughly

Maintenance

For cladding and fascias and other surfaces treated with just Sikkens Cetol HLS Plus:

  1. Lightly sand with a fine grade abrasive paper to keep splinters and rough edges away
  2. Repair colour defects with Sikkens Cetol HLS Plus in the appropriate colour and apply one extra coat to finish

Can HLS be used on plastic gutters?

No, as this is a stain for timber, the stain would not be able to adhere to the plastic.

Can I put HLS paint a log cabin?

The Sikkens HLS is a very popular choice for log cabins and summer houses. For longer lasting results, try putting two coats of Sikkens Cetol Filter 7 Plus over this.

Goes on great
Once I had cleaned the outside of my wooden workshop it went on well and covered well. Two coats and it is repelling the rain great, can still see the grain in wood but has made shed look fresh.

Does the job … easily
Bought this for the timber thwarts on my 15 dinghy ! This is the same product as used by the manufacturer- Coulam on literally hundreds of boats . Once worn no need for much preparation- add another coat without stripping existing!

Brilliant undercoat for Cetol Filter 7
It's a bit runny so watch out for accumulated drips. Solvent-based, so not good for the environment but water-based products don't work IMHO. Soaks deeply into bare wood, especially end-grain. Must use the Sikkens Cetol Filter 7 as a top coat for a fab finish.

It was well packaged and arrived promptly
I have used Master Stroke in the past and found it to cover well , was expecting the same from this product. However I think I have just chosen a varnish which behaved as a varnish should, but was a bit disappointing as it didn’t cover in the way I’d hoped.
