Sikkens Cetol Filter 7 Plus is a medium build, solvent-based woodstain for doors, windows and other exterior joinery. Formulated with UV absorbers to give wood superior protection against sun damage. Being moisture vapour permeable, it allows water vapour to escape and not get trapped under the surface.

Sikkens maintains this product will provide 5 years of protection from weathering when used in conjunction with Sikkens Cetol HLS Plus.

Please Note: Sikkens Cetol Filter 7 was previously branded as Sikkens Cetol Filter 7 Plus. The formulation has remained unchanged.

Preparation

Timber surfaces to be treated must be clean, dry and free from dust, dirt, wax and grease. The wood should be allowed to acclimatise to its end-use environment before treating. The moisture content of the timber should not exceed 18% prior to coating.

Joinery should be treated with a base coat of Sikkens Cetol HLS Plus and othewise free of any other surface coatings

Application

Back

Always do a test area before starting any project to assess product suitability and final finish. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times. This product is ready to use straight from the tin and does not require thinning.

Only apply at temperatures ranging between 5°C and 35°C and a relative humidity of no more than 85%. Stir thoroughly before and periodically during application to ensure a consistent finish.

Apply 2 coats of Sikkens Cetol 7 Plus with the ProDec Trade Pro Bristle Blend Brush
For best results, it is necessary to keep the interval between application of these coats as short as possible
Allow to dry fully before application of the next coat

Maintenance

The finish should be inspected yearly to check for any surface defects or damage as a result of weathering. If required, areas of wear or damage can be rectified by carrying out the following.

If required, fill any holes with a suitable wood filler
Colour any defective areas after preparation with the matching colour of Sikkens Cetol HLS Plus
Re-apply one coat of Sikkens Cetol Filter 7 Plus

Can Filter 7 be used as a stand-alone product?

No, the Sikkens Cetol HLS Plus must be applied to bare wood first. If this product is applied directly to bare wood, then it will appear patchy as it is a higher build wood stain.

I have received two tins of Sikkens but one looks different to the other. One is orange and one has a purple band on. Are they safe to use?

Absolutely, in 2024 Sikkens have rebrand this product. They have assured us that the formula inside the tins are identical.

Great, shiny finish, easy to use

Needs a Sikkens Cetol HLS Plus undercoat for bare wood. It's a bit runny so watch out for accumulated drips. Solvent-based, so not good for the environment but water-based products don't work IMHO. Fantastic finish, looks stunning.
