Overview

Overview

Back

Sandtex Trade Eggshell X TRA is a tough and durable, low sheen exterior finish. Providing long lasting protection to most previously painted wood and metal surfaces. It flexes with the surface to avoid any flaking or peeling, and offers 10 years durability.

Preparation

Preparation

Back

To get the best results, ensure surfaces to be painted are sound, clean, dry and free from all defective or poorly adhering material, dirt, grease and chalky residue.

New Bare Wood

  • Sand all edges of remaining coating until smooth, rounding any sharp edges to 1 - 3mm
  • Remove all traces of sanding dust with a vacuum cleaner or slightly damp, lint-free cloth
  • De-grease new bare timber using white spirit, using a fresh side of the cloth regularly
  • Coat any knots with 2 coats of knotting agent prior to application to prevent any possible resin bleed staining the coating
  • Fill any gaps, holes or splits in the wood with a suitable wood filler
  • Prime the surface with 1 coat of a suitable primer and undercoat, and allow to dry

Previously Treated Wood

  • Special precautions should be taken during surface preparation of pre-1960s paint surfaces over wood and metal as they may contain harmful lead
  • Lightly abrade all surfaces to remove any grey, weathered wood and surface sheen from remaining coatings, and to open up the grain on new wood
  • Previously painted surfaces should be thoroughly sanded to provide a sound key for painting, and to remove any loose or defective material
  • Ensure moisture levels do not exceed 18%
  • Remove any biological growth such as mould and algae using a suitable fungicide solution
  • Remove defective putty glazing, clean and prime the area. Replacement putty must be allowed to form a hard skin, prior to applying the finish
  • Coat any knots with 2 coats of knotting agent prior to application to prevent any possible resin bleed staining the coating
  • Fill any gaps, holes or splits in the wood with a suitable wood filler
  • Spot prime all bare areas with 1 coat of suitable primer and undercoat, and allow to dry

Metal Surfaces

  • Wash with hot soapy water to remove oil, grease and dirt. Rinse thoroughly and allow to dry
  • Pre-treated galvanised surfaces with a suitable degreasing and etching solution
  • Lightly abrade non-ferrous surfaces to form a sound key (not galvanised surfaces). Rinse thoroughly and allow to dry
  • Prime all metal surfaces, including galvanised surfaces using a suitable rust inhibiting primer
  • Ensure ferrous surfaces are free from rust and scale, and taken back to clean metal. Treat with 24 hours using a suitable rust inhibiting primer prior to paint application

Application

Application

Back

Always do a test area before starting any project to test product suitability and final finish. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the container at all times.

Do not apply at temperatures below 8°C or when rain is likely. Do not use or store in extremes of temperature and protect from frost.

  1. Stir thoroughly before and periodically during use
  2. Apply evenly and consistently to maintain a 'wet edge', using a good quality synthetic bristle brush or microfibre roller
  3. Always follow the direction of the woodgrain
  4. It is recommended to apply 2 coats to pre-primed new bare wood
  5. Apply 1 - 2 coats to all other pre-primed surfaces
  6. Allow to dry for 16 hours between coats
  7. Touch dry in 4 - 6 hours

Cleaning Equipment

Clean brushes, rollers and any spillages immediately after use, using white spirit.
