Preparation

Preparation

Back

All surfaces must be clean, dry and free from dust, grease, wax, rust and loose material before application. Proper preparation will help improve adhesion and create a smoother, longer lasting finish for exterior topcoats.

  • Remove all loose, flaking or peeling coatings and thoroughly abrade previously painted surfaces to provide a sound key
  • Weathered, grey or denatured timber should be sanded back to a clean, smooth surface before priming
  • Fill cracks, holes and surface imperfections with a suitable exterior grade filler and allow repairs to fully dry
  • For bare wood, ensure the timber is dry and treat knots or resinous areas with an appropriate knotting solution
  • Previously painted surfaces should be cleaned with a mild detergent solution, rinsed thoroughly and allowed to dry
  • Remove rust, oxidation and corrosion from metal surfaces before application
  • Carefully dust off all surfaces after sanding and preparation before applying the primer undercoat

Application

Application

Back

We recommend trialing a test area before starting your project to check suitability, adhesion and final appearance. For best results, apply in dry conditions when temperatures remain above 8°C during application and drying. Avoid application during damp, wet or high humidity conditions.

  • Stir thoroughly before and during use to maintain an even consistency and finish
  • Apply evenly using a good quality synthetic brush or medium pile exterior roller
  • Apply a full, even coat and avoid over spreading the primer undercoat during application
  • Pay particular attention to edges, joints, exposed end grain and repaired areas to ensure complete coverage
  • Allow approximately 1 hour drying time before applying additional coats or topcoats under normal conditions
  • For best long term performance, follow with 2-3 coats of Sandtex 10 Year Exterior Multi-Surface Gloss Paint

Finishing

Finishing

Back

Sandtex 10 Year Exterior Multi-Surface Primer Undercoat should be overcoated once fully dry to achieve maximum durability and weather protection. Leaving primed surfaces exposed for extended periods before topcoating may affect overall finish performance, particularly on heavily exposed exterior surfaces.

For best long term results, use with 2-3 coats of Sandtex 10 Year Exterior Multi-Surface Gloss Paint. Periodically inspect exterior joinery and previously repaired areas for signs of wear or damage and touch up exposed areas promptly to help maintain protection and appearance.
