Overview

Overview

Back

A microporous, water based and translucent coating offering protection against the elements throughout the year. Sadolin wet wood can be applied to both dry and wet decking that has just been washed, or after a shower, once the standing water has been removed. Also, there is no need to dilute or mix the decking stain and it is ready to use immediately.

Please note: The final sheen of translucent coatings is dependant on various factors, such as the species of wood, the colour of the timber and any existing coatings.

Preparation

Preparation

Back

The project area needs to be clean and clear of any dust, debris or any contaminants prior to treatment

  • Wash the surfaces with a mild detergent and then rinse with clean water
  • Ensure that all the standing water and puddles have been removed
  • If necessary lightly sand or scrub with a non-metallic brush to remove any loose particles
  • Any resin deposits need to be removed with a scraper
  • Degrease by using a lint free cloth dampened with methylated spirits
  • If the decking is excessively weathered then sand the wood to form a clean and sound surface
  • Remove any algae or organic growths with a suitable fungicidal wash
  • Abrade the sound timber in the direction of the grain with a medium or fine grain pad (P180 or P240)
  • Apply woodfillers to repair any minor defects and gaps

New Timber Decking

  • Coat any non treated wood or freshly sawn ends of decking boards of Sadolin Quick Drying Wood Preserver ensuring the decking timber is dry and wait 24 hours for the wood preservative to dry
  • Remove any salts that remain from the preservative treatment

Previously Coated Decking

  • Remove any previous coatings of paint or varnish and then treat the decking as new timber and follow the preparation above
  • If previously treated with creosote or water repellent products ensure the timber is well weathered and does not retain any water repellent properties. This can be tested by sprinkling water onto the decking and seeing if the water is absorbed
  • Grey and denatured timber will need to be sanded down to bright and clean wood and then treated as new timber

Please Note:

  • Do not apply Sadolin Wet Wood Decking Stain in inclement weather such as rain and showers or if the temperature is likely to fall below 8ºC or exceed 25ºC
  • Sadolin Wet Wood Decking Stain is not suitable as a penetrating treatment process and the use of linseed oil putty or modified non setting compounds are not recommended

Application

Application

Back

Always do a test area to assess the suitability of the product and final finish. Also follow the manufacturer's instructions to attain the best results.

  • Thoroughly stir the Sadolin Wet Wood Decking Stain to ensure a consistent mixture of the formula
  • For best results apply with a good quality synthetic fibre bristle brush
  • On new decking, the initial coat should also be applied to concealed areas wherever possible
  • Apply 3 or more coats, depending on the absorbency of the deking timber, with a drying time of 6 hours between each coat
  • After waiting 5-10 minutes after applying the coat, redistribute the coating brushing in the direction of the grain
  • Avoid overspreading the coat as this will lead to inferior results
  • Ensure the end grains and sawn timbers are coated to saturation point as these areas are more porous and will absorb more decking stain
  • To clean the equipment after applying, use warm soapy water and rinse thoroughly

F.A.Q.

Back
Could I use the Sadolin Wet Wood Decking Stain on an outdoor bench or would it come off on clothes?

Sadolin have advised that this has not been tried and tested on garden furniture. Once it is dry, the stain pigments should have taken a firm place in the wood grain, so it is unlikely to come off on clothing. The best thing to do is a test area to assess final results.
