Overview

Overview

Back

Sadolin Superdec provides a solution to most common issues associated with traditional paints. It can be applied to new and previously painted or stained surfaces, and is ideal for use where a complete change of colour is required or where the existing surface has become weathered and uneven in appearance. Sadolin Superdec Opaque Wood Protection is suitable for a wide range of surfaces, including:

  • Exterior Wood, such as windows, doors, conservatories, fencing and cladding
  • Plastic, for example, PVCu
  • Metal
  • Concrete
  • Brick
  • Stone and Plastisol

Please note : The 250ml variation is primarily used for colour sampling rather than full-scale application.

This product is not suitable for use on wooden decking or floors, copper, polished concrete or concrete floors. For decking, see Sadolin Decking Oil, or alternatively our full range of Decking Treatments.

This product is mixed to order so unfortunately cannot be returned with the exception of the colours Black, Walnut and White. This does not affect your statutory rights.

Preparation

Preparation

Back

Wooden surfaces to be treated with Sadolin Superdec must be suitably prepared, clean, dry and free from all traces of surface dust and debris. The moisture content should not exceed 18% prior to coating.

New or Bare Wood

  • Resinous deposits on bare timber, especially new wood, should be removed by wiping with a lint-free cloth dampened with methylated spirits
  • Knotting agents should not be used in conjunction with Sadolin Opaque Wood Protection
  • Sadolin Wood Filler or Sadolin Stainable Wood Filler may be used for making good any minor surface defects, imperfections or open joints
  • Some general or 'All Purpose' fillers may not be suitable
  • Only use non-ferrous fixings, screws and nails
  • Where there is a risk of extractive discolouration, especially when using white or pale colours on resinous / knotty softwoods and coloured hardwoods, an initial coat of a suitable blocking primer is recommended in order to minimise the risk of this type of discolouration
  • Timber that has been exposed for 4 weeks or more will require sanding back to a clean, sound surface
  • If required, pre-treat wood with Sadolin Quick Drying Wood Preserver before applying Sadolin Superdec
  • Lightly abrade (sand), in the direction of the grain to a smooth surface, using a medium grade abrasive paper
  • Do not break through the existing surface coating
  • Thoroughly remove all wood dust
  • Where there is localised damage, or deterioration has occurred as a result of exposure of the factory coating for longer than 3 months, affected areas should be thoroughly sanded back to a sound substrate and recoated

Previously Painted or Varnished Wood

  • Previously painted and varnished surfaces in good condition should only require a light sanding to aid with adhesion
  • Stained surfaces in good condition should only need to be washed down with warm water and detergent, allowing to dry before application
  • For surfaces in poor condition, remove any loose, flaking material with a scraper or abrasive paper, sanding in the direction of the grain
  • Remove any weathered timber, and sand the sound coating with abrasive paper to provide an adequate key
  • Strip any surfaces in poor condition bare and treat as new wood
  • Where there is localised damage, or deterioration has occurred as a result of exposure of the factory coating for longer than 3 months, affected areas should be thoroughly sanded back to a sound substrate and re-coated

Glazing

  • The backs of new glazing beads, end grains and rebates should be brought to a finish with Superdec Opaque Wood Protection prior to fixing
  • Joinery to be coated with Sadolin Superdec should be glazed using a suitable sealant
  • The use of linseed oil putty or modified, non-setting compounds are not recommended in conjunction with our wood protection systems
  • To confirm compatibility, please consult the manufacturer of the relevant glazing material
  • Silicone glazing materials should only be applied upon completion of the finishing coats

Application

Application

Back

Always do a small test area before starting any project to assess product suitability, adhesion and finish. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times.

Do not apply if there is a risk of rain, or when air / substrate temperatures are below 8°C or above 25°C or the relative humidity is above 80% during application or drying periods. Protect from frost and rain until dry. Failure to meet these requirements may adversely affect the drying, visual quality and durability of the finish.

Ensure Sadolin Superdec Opaque Wood Protection is thoroughly stirred before and during application, otherwise sheen and colour variations may be experienced. Sadolin Superdec is supplied ready for use. Do not thin.

  1. Apply Sadolin Superdec in a full flowing coat, ensuring all surfaces and end grains are fully coated
  2. For best results, use a good quality synthetic fibre brush specifically designed for use with waterborne products
  3. Pay special attention to end grain, tops and bottoms of doors, and undersides of window sills
  4. Allow 4 hours to dry

Maintenance

A lightening in colour, reduction in sheen and a loss of water-repellency is an indication that maintenance is required. For general maintenance, lightly abrade in the direction of the wood grain and clean using warm water and a mild detergent, then rinse thoroughly with clean water. Once dry, a fresh coat of Sadolin Superdec Opaque Wood Protection can be applied.

If the finish is badly flaking or peeling, to the point where the bare wood is showing through or has started to grey, please follow the full Preparation and Application instructions above.

Do I need to seal the knots in the wood before application of Superdec?

This is generally not needed when using Sadolin Superdec unless you are using white or pale colours on resinous / knotty softwoods or coloured hardwoods. If using these, an initial coat of a suitable blocking primer is recommended to minimise the risk of discolouration from resins in timbers.

Can Sadolin Superdec be used to paint the treads of the timber stairs of a house? Would it be slippery?

As a super flexible product, this paint works fantastically outside but it wouldn't be durable enough to be used inside under foot.

Can I use Sadolin Superdec on PVC?

Yes, we would recommend a lighter colour on this surface due to the heat that a darker shade can attract. Give the surface a key and a clean up before use.

Can I use Superdec on previously painted wood?

You certainly can. Be careful to ensure that the substrate is clean and sound with no peeling or flaking and apply two- three coats of Sadolin Superdec, depending on colour selection.

Will Superdec cover green residue?

The green is most likely Algae, if so, that needs to be removed with an algae remover such as Ronseal Decking Cleaner and Reviver otherwise it may stop paint from adhering.

What sheen level is the Sadolin Superdec? Is it glossy?

As standard, the Sadolin Superdec colour are all a satin finish (mid sheen) unless you specifically select the White/ Black Gloss option.

Can i use Superdec on wooden sheds and fence panels?

Absolutely, the Sadolin Superdec is a very flexible external paint, meaning that it resists peeling and flaking as the timber naturally expands and contracts.

Can Superdec be sprayed?

Sadolin do not recommend spray application due to the thickness of the paint. Instead consider a good quality brush such as ProDec Premier Synthetic Brush or Marshall Velour Roller depending on what you are applying it to. Why not give our Woodcare Experts a call on 01303 213838 to discuss your options.

.
Can I paint my uPVC windows in Superdec?

Absolutely, it is such a versitile product for use on a range of substrates. We would recommend a lighter colour on this surface due to the heat that a darker shade can attract.

Great paint
Superb stuff. I bought it to be the waterproof finish of a shed made of exterior grade plywood. Prepared per instructions with a light wash and dry, the paint went on thickly, I used a 4 inch masonry brush to apply it. Coverage better than stayed on the tin. Touch dry times were accurate on a warm day. Some panels were hit by heavy showers between touch dry and recoatable. This caused some blistering but a light rub down of the blisteted areas and the next coat went on fine. No reaction to subsequent rain. Not the cheapest paint but definitely a case of getting what you pay for.
