Preparation

Preparation

Back

Timber surfaces must be suitably prepared, clean, sound and dry. The moisture content should not exceed 18% prior to coating.

Bare Timber

  • Resinous deposits should be removed with a scraper
  • Remove any traces of mould, algae or fungi with a dedicated mould and mildew cleaner
  • Degrease any exposed bare timber surface by wiping with a lint-free cloth dampened with methylated spirits
  • Knotting agents should not be used prior to application of Sadolin Woodstain
  • Fill any holes or imperfections with Sadolin Wood Filler or Sadolin Stainable Wood Filler
  • Only use non-ferrous screws, nails and fixings

New Timber

  • Any non preservative treated softwood timber should be treated with two liberal coats of Sadolin Quick Drying Wood Preserver, paying particular attention to end grains and allowing 24 hours drying time between coats
  • Do not use Sadolin Quick Dry Woodstain on substrates which have had water-repellent preservative treatments applied
  • Where possible, the first coat should be applied all round prior to fixing

Previously Stained Timber

  • Lightly abrade, in the direction of the wood grain
  • Do not break through the surface coating and remove any sanding dust before coating
  • Where there is localised damage, or deterioration has occurred as a result of exposure of the factory coating for longer than 3 months, affected areas should be thoroughly sanded back to a sound substrate and re-coated
  • If a coloured base stain is required in order to match the existing factory applied coating, use Sadolin Quick Dry Woodstain in the most appropriate colour before proceeding as described above

Glazing

  • The backs of new glazing beads, end grains and rebates should be brought to a finish with Sadolin Quick Dry Woodstain prior to fixing
  • Joinery to be coated should be glazed using a suitable sealant
  • The use of linseed oil putty or modified, non-setting compounds are not recommended in conjunction with Sadolin products
  • To confirm compatibility, please consult the manufacturer of the relevant glazing material
  • Silicone glazing materials should only be applied upon completion of the finishing coats

Application

Application

Back

Always do a small test area before starting any project to assess the colour and compatibility of the finish. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times.

Ensure product is thoroughly stirred before and during application, otherwise sheen and colour variations may be experienced. This product is supplied ready for use. Do not thin.

Stir thoroughly before and during application for a consistent finish. This product is supplied ready for use; do not thin.

  1. Apply 2 full flowing coats of Sadolin Quick Dry Woodstain using a good quality synthetic fibre brush, ensuring all surfaces and end grains are fully coated
  2. The first coat should be applied liberally in order to satisfy the natural absorption / porosity of the timber surface
  3. Pay special attention to end grain, tops and bottoms of doors, and undersides of sills
  4. Allow 6 hours drying time between coats

Maintenance

The need for maintenance is indicated by a lightening in colour, reduction in sheen as the coating erodes, and a loss of water-repellent qualities.

  • All defective coatings should be completely removed
  • Any grey, denatured, exposed timber surfaces must be thoroughly sanded back to clean, bright timber
  • Organic growths must be removed and infected surfaces should be treated with a suitable fungicidal solution
  • Remaining sound surfaces should be cleaned using warm water and a mild detergent and rinsed thoroughly with clean water
  • Bare timber should be patch primed with one or more coats of Sadolin Quick Dry Woodstain in the appropriate colour to match the existing colour as required

Will Sadolin Quick Dry Woodstain be okay to apply over creosote?

Unfortunately, this can't be applied over creosote as it will be unable to form a bond. Depending on the project, you may wish to consider Protek Stable Coat which can be applied over old creosote coatings.

Excellent, spreads easily and provides good protection
A high quality product that provides long lasting protection. Due to the approximately 6 hours drying time it is works well on doors and windows that need to be closed overnight.

I was recommended to use this Sadolin product by a neighbour who is a retired joiner and I have been very pleased with the result
I would certainly recommend this product and would definitely buy it again - it gives excellent coverage and great protection to the wood surface.

A mistake
I bought this as it was the only "natural" Sadolin wood stain I could find. at the time (in lockdown), I have always used Sadolin Advanced one coat in natural, and it's been great (a lovely rich brown colour) so as this was the nearest I could find, I bought a litre. Sadly the colour is nothing like the stuff I've used in the past, and is far from "natural", more like orange pine. I only opened it months after purchase so I didn't see any point trying to return it.

A quality product, but be aware it does require multiple coats to achieve the correct finish.
