Sadolin Polyurethane Floor Varnish is suitable for all wooden flooring, including hardwood and softwood boards and parquet. It is not suitable for use on laminate flooring. Made from polyurethane and acrylic resin. Easy to clean and resistant to stains and spills. Touch dry in 1-2 hours, recoatable in 2-4 hours, fully hard after 24 hours.

Preparation

Preparation

Back

Timber surfaces must be suitably prepared, clean, sound and dry. The moisture content should not exceed 16% prior to coating.

Bare or New Timber

  1. Lightly abrade along the grain using a suitable abrasive paper, taking care not to damage or scratch the timber surface
  2. Remove any sanding dust with a vacuum cleaner or by wiping away
  3. Resinous deposits should be removed with a scraper
  4. Remove any remaining residues and degrease any exposed bare timber surface by wiping with a clean, lint-free cloth, dampened with methylated spirits, frequently changing the face of the cloth
  5. Allow solvent to fully evaporate before over-coating
  6. Organic growths must be removed and infected surfaces should be treated with a suitable fungicidal solution
  7. All existing finishes should be thoroughly abraded to provide a key for good adhesion
  8. Remaining sound surfaces should be cleaned using warm water and a mild detergent, then rinsed thoroughly with clean water
  9. Knotting agents should not be used with Sadolin varnish systems
  10. Sadolin Wood Filler and Sadolin Stainable Wood Filler can be used for making good any minor surface defects, imperfections and open joints
  11. Only use non-ferrous screws, nails and fixings

Previously Coated Timber

  1. Remove all defective coatings, then treat as 'New Timber'
  2. Take special precautions during the surface preparation of pre 1960's painted surfaces as they may contain harmful lead

Coating Over a Stained Finish

  1. Allow solvent-borne coatings to dry for at least 3-5 days before applying Sadolin Polyurethane Floor Varnish
  2. Waterborne wood stains can normally be over-coated within 24 hours, but advice from the relevant manufacturer should be sought

Please Note: Some discolouration of the finish may occur if Sadolin Polyurethane Floor Varnish is applied over paler shades of previous coatings.

Application

Application

Back

Always do a small test area before beginning any project to assess colour, consistency and compatibility of the finish. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times.

Do not apply at temperatures below 8°C or above 25°C during application or drying periods. At time of application the floor temperature should be between 10°C and 25°C. Apply when relative humidity does not exceed 65%. Avoid direct sunlight on the floor during application of the varnish. Protect from water until dry. Failure to meet these requirements may adversely affect the drying, visual quality and durability of the finish.

Ensure product is thoroughly stirred before and during application, otherwise sheen and colour variations may be experienced. Sadolin Polyurethane Floor Varnish is supplied ready for use. Do not thin.

  1. For best results use a good quality, synthetic fibre bristle brush specifically designed for the application of waterborne products. The varnish can also be applied using a microfibre roller or paint pad
  2. Apply in full flowing coats, laying off in the direction of the grain, ensuring all surfaces and end grains are fully coated
  3. Finish with 3 full coats of Polyurethane Floor Varnish allowing 2-4 hours drying time between coats
  4. Avoid over-brushing as this will cause brush marks and result in a poor quality finish
  5. Carefully de-nib between coats using a fine grade nylon abrasive pad or a fine grade (P240 or finer) wet or dry silicone carbide abrasive paper in the direction of the grain, being careful not to break through the surface coating. Remove any sanding dust with a vacuum
  6. All subsequent coatings should be applied as soon as possible after the previous coat has fully dried
  7. Keep foot traffic to a minimum for the first 24 hours after the final coat and avoid putting rugs down for 7 days for the varnish to thoroughly cure

Cleaning Equipment

Clean brushes and equipment with warm, soapy water and rinse with clean water immediately after use. If spilled, Sadolin Polyurethane Floor Varnish should be removed immediately while still wet, using clean water.

Expensive but worth it
I varnished my wooden floors with Ronseal and normally after a while, they begin to chip and show wear. So last summer I revarnished the floor after about 5 years and put two layers of Sadolin on top. This floor varnish is really tough, it's not 100% chip-proof but you have to really drag a heavy piece of furniture across the floor to dint it. This is what happened to me, a couple of chips when decorating and moving furniture around. It's still looking good. I varnished it 7 months ago so it's still too early to say how long it will last. However it is quick to dry and you can recoat in 2 hours, so if I do get chips I can quickly redo them.
