Overview

Overview

Back

Rustins Danish Oil is the original Danish Oil. It's ideal for all interior and exterior timber, bringing out the natural beauty of the wood. Gives a natural open grained, soft lustre finish. Perfect for turned woodwork.

It differs from Teak Oil in that it contains special ingredients, which prevent it from drying to a gloss.

An interesting fact about Danish Oil is that every producer of Danish Oil has their own unique blend, meaning that no two oils are the same!

Preparation

Back

New or Bare Timber

  1. Bare wood must be clean, dry and free from wax, dust and other surface contaminants
  2. Lightly sand or degrees the surface if required taking care to remove all traces of sanding dust
  3. Wood may be stained or dyed with either a water-based or solvent-based wood stain or dye before oiling if required
  4. Do not treat the wood with a knotting agent or sanding sealer

Previously Coated Timber

  1. All surface coatings such as paints and varnishes must be removed with a paint and varnish remover before oiling
  2. Waxed surfaces should be thoroughly scrubbed with white spirit or a wax and polish remover, and a scouring pad
  3. Wipe away the dissolved wax or polish with a clean rag
  4. Wipe surface with water to test that all of the wax has been removed
  5. Repeat the process if the water continues to bead on the surface of the wood

Application

Application

Back

Always do a test area before starting any project to assess product suitability and final finish. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the container at all times. Stir / shake Rustins Danish Oil well before use or product will dry to a gloss finish.

Danish Oil should be applied at a room temperature of between 15°C - 25°C. Do not apply below 5°C.

  1. Apply the Danish Oil liberally with a clean lint-free cloth or good quality brush, and wipe off any surplus oil after a few minutes
  2. For a superior smooth finish, the final coat may be applied using a plastic scouring pad, rubbing in the direction of the grain and wiping away any surplus with a soft, lint-free cloth or paper towel
  3. Re-coat once the previous coat is dry (approximately 4 - 6 hours in normal drying conditions)
  4. New or bare wood should be oiled 3 times initially
  5. Exterior wood requires a minimum of 3 coats applied liberally and not wiped off
  6. To improve penetration and durability, dilute the first coat 20% with white spirit
  7. If applying Danish Oil to veneered doors, it is advisable to check with the door manufacturer before proceeding

Can you get a spout for the 2.5l can? I use this on small decorative projects so can't just pour it everywhere messily

Unfortunately not but you can always try using LickTools Precision Decorators Tape. Simply tear off a piece that's 8 or 9 inches long and stick it to the edge of the rim. Make sure it extends an inch or two past the rim of the can then fold the resulting tabs under, which will create a bit of a spout.

Easy to use, good coverage
Made a great base for the beeswax. I could see straight away an improvement in the look of the wood, it appeared fresher and livelier, less dull. It is easy to apply and covers the area well. I did apply three coats, but the results made it worth the elbow grease. Gives good protection to the wood. I will use this product again to ensure the wood stays in good condition.

Works well, food safe
It seems to work well, although only time will tell how durable it is. It gives a nice finish with a little care and, for me, the important thing is that it is food-safe.
