Overview

Overview

Back

Rust-Oleum Surface Primer is a water-based, multi-surface coating for use on interior and exterior surfaces such as bare or painted wood, ceilings, walls, doors, and furniture, and on exterior walls, doors, railings and more. Offers excellent adhesion and fills minor surface imperfections for a smooth finish.

Preparation

Preparation

Back

For the best results, ensure surfaces to be coated are sound, clean, dry and free from all defective or poorly adhering material such as dirt, grease, paint or adhesives. If needed, clean surface using an appropriate cleaning solution.

  1. Take special precautions during surface preparation of pre-1960s paint surfaces over wood and metal as they may contain harmful lead
  2. Sand all edges of remaining coating until smooth
  3. Seal new plaster, which has a polished or powdery finish, using a suitable sealer
  4. Using an 80 - 100 grit sandpaper, lightly sand exterior timber to remove loose or weathered wood fibres and mill glaze
  5. Clean as much of the existing stain as possible, prior to priming
  6. Remove and treat any mould and mildew on interior surfaces using an appropriate mould and mildew solution
  7. Fill any nail holes and imperfections with a suitable multi-purpose filler and spot prime the area
  8. Spot prime any knots and resin streaks using a suitable knot block
  9. All areas of rust should be cleaned using a wire brush

Application

Application

Back

Always do a test area before starting any project to check product suitability and effectiveness. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times.

  1. Shake the can until you can hear it rattle, then keep shaking for 1 minute
  2. Hold can upright, 30cm away from the surface to be coated, spraying horizontally to ensure an even finish
  3. Spray using a back and fourth motion, overlapping with each stroke for even coverage
  4. Apply 1 - 2 coats, allowing a few minutes between each coat
  5. Allow to fully dry for 1 hour, touch dry in 20 minutes

Cleaning Equipment

Turn the can upside down and spray for a few seconds, then wipe nozzle with a damp, lint-free cloth.

Finishing

Finishing

Back

Once fully dry, Rust-Oleum Surface Primer can be over-coated with Rust-Oleum Painters Touch Multi-Purpose Paint, following the manufacturer's instructions.

Can the Rust-Oleum surface Primer be used on plastic?

Rust-Oleum do not recommend this being used on plastic surfaces. Take a look at Bedec MSP Multi Surface Paint. This cuts out quite a few various products around the house and is super versatile.
