Overview

Overview

Back

Ronseal Garden Paint is a highly versatile garden paint that can be used to protect and colour a wide range of exterior surfaces including garden sheds, fences, garden furniture, terracotta plant pots, brick garden walls, and more.

Preparation

Preparation

Back

Ensure all surfaces to be painted are clean, dry and free from dirt, debris or any other surface contaminants. Ronseal Garden Paint is not suitable for use on plastics, cast iron or areas subjected to foot traffic, such as decking boards.

How to prepare new wood

  1. Unfinished softwoods can be painted straight away as long as they do not have a previous wax, oil or silicone finish
  2. All other woods should be left to weather for 6 weeks
  3. Lightly sand to remove surface fibres and splinters
  4. Wipe the wood over with a lint-free cloth dampened with methylated spirit
  5. Oily hardwoods should be painted soon after being wiped down with meths

How to prepare old garden wood

Old coating type finishes such as paints, varnishes and varnish type stains must be fully removed by sanding or with a product stripper / remover prior to painting.

  1. Remove all traces of mould, algae and fungi with a stiff brush or scraper
  2. Treat areas affected by mould, algae and fungi with a mould and mildew remover
  3. Wood can be cleaned with a suitable, exterior wood cleaner, prior to painting, if required
  4. Any instances of wet rot can be treated with Ronseal Wet Rot Wood Hardener, and any existing woodworm eradicated with Ronseal Woodworm Killer
  5. Any decayed wood should be removed and replaced with clean, sound timber
  6. Make good any holes or minor imperfections with a wood filler
  7. Treat wood with a suitable wax, oil and silicon-free exterior wood preservative, if required
  8. Where possible, preserve all sides including end grain prior to application of Ronseal Garden Paint
  9. Ensure that the wood is fully dry before painting

For best results, prime all wooden surfaces with Ronseal Exterior All Surface Primer and Undercoat.

Preparing Terracotta

Terracotta pots and other surfaces may need a good sanding / wire-brushing as they are often treated or glazed to protect them from rain and frost damage. These treatments will reduce adhesion of the paint to the surface.

Weathered terracotta needs to be water-bead tested. If the water beads on the surface, sanding will be required to remove the surface coating before painting. If the water soaks in to the Terracotta, then the paint can be applied directly.

Preparing metal

Metal needs a suitable primer before painting with Ronseal Garden Paint. Use grey primer under darker colours, and white primer under lighter colours.

Preparing brick or stone

Remove any dust or loose material with a stiff brush before painting. This product is not suitable for walls prone to damp.

Application

Application

Back

Stir thoroughly before and periodically during application to ensure a consistent finish.

  1. Apply a thin, even coat of Ronseal Garden Paint, following the grain appropriately with a synthetic brush (such as the Ronseal Fence Life Brush) or microfibre roller.
  2. Allow the first coat to dry for 4 hours
  3. Apply a second and third coat as above
  4. If painting wooden garden furniture, allow 2 to 3 days before using or adding cushions and other soft furnishings.

Top Tips: Always do a test area to assess product suitability and final finish. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times. Don't apply in wet conditions or if rain, frost or snow is likely

Regular Cleaning

Wooden surfaces painted with Ronseal Garden Paint can be wiped clean with a damp, lint-free cloth and cleaned at regular intervals with a suitable, exterior wood cleaner, as required.

Maintenance

If the finish becomes worn or tired looking over time, simply apply a fresh coat of Garden Paint, following the Preparation and Application instructions above.

Back

Does Ronseal Garden Paint need an undercoat or primer?
If you are using Garden Paint on a metal surface then you will need an appropriate primer such as Hammerite, otherwise you can simply get painting directly onto the wood.

Is Ronseal safe for animals?

Once dry, this is safe for pets and animals

Can Garden paint be spray applied?

It's thicker formula makes it less likely to drip when applying to vertical surfaces with a brush, but due to this we would not recommend using with a sprayer as it will likely clog.

I have brand new mud kitchen. Do I need to seal it first to protect it before applying this paint?

If the timber is not pressure treated or tanalised, to extend the long life of exterior timber, we would first suggest applying a suitable wood preservative. For best results, after this, prime all wooden surfaces with Ronseal All Surface Exterior Primer and Undercoat before applying Ronseal Garden Paint.

Can Garden Paint be used on a plaster wall as paint for a room?

Ronseal Garden Paint is an exterior paint. Exterior paints tend to be more flexible to allow movement of timber but they arent necessarily durable enough to cope with knocks and abrasions typical in the home. We would recommend instead, looking at a suitable interior wall paint.

Can you use Ronseal Garden Paint on wood raised beds or is it harmful to plants?

Once this is completely cured, Garden Paint can be used on such projects, however, if you are wishing to do the inside of a plant bed, we would recommend using a DPM to protect the plants and the paintwork from reacting to each other which is particularly important if using on plants/ vegetables which are grown to be consumed.

Can Garden Paint be used on a ceramic pot?

Ronseal Garden Paint can be used on terracotta and brick but hasn't necessarily been tested on ceramic. Trial a test area to ensure it adheres before completing the project.

What coverage will I get from the Ronseal Garden Paint when I am applying to stone?

As a general rule, Ronseal suggest coverage of up to 12m² per litre, per coat.

Will Ronseal Garden Paint work on glass?

Ronseal suggest this is only for exterior wood, bricks, terracotta and metal, however, some customers have found that this will stick to a lot of substrates not mentioned in this description. Our best advice is to try a small test patch and give it a go!

Can Ronseal Garden Paint be used on patio slabs?

Although you can use the paint successfully on slabs, it would depend on the usage of the surfaces as it is not durable enough under foot.

Is Garden Paint good for concrete ornaments?

Ronseal Garden Paint is ideal for use on most garden surfaces. It can be used on both rough sawn and smooth planed wood, brick, terracotta, metal, and stone.

How much will a 750ml tin of Ronseal Garden Paint cover?

This depends on the porosity of the surface but as a general rule you will get approximately 12m² per litre. meaning a 750ml tin will cover roughly 3.6 m² .

I am looking for a good matt black paint for interior use which will not give a sheen as most matt black paints give. Will the Ronseal Garden Paint be ok for this?

The Ronseal Garden Paint is an exterior use paint which we would not recommend using inside the home. Why not call our Woodcare Experts on 01303 213838 to discuss your options as the paint recommended will differ depending on what you are applying it to.

Does the Ronseal Garden Paint need a protective varnish before expose outside?

The Garden Paint does not require a varnish over the top and is fine to use on its own. As an exterior grade paint, it offers the protection needed for timber without any additional coatings.

Great Colour, Clean Finish
I previously painted my fences using this colour 5 years ago and they needed a touch up. I'd forgotten that this paint provides great coverage even after 1 one coat, so I bought more than I needed, but I guess I'm all set for the next touch-up!

Good paint
I have been painting terracotta pots with this and some wooden planters but a bit early to tell how durable it is. Goes on well but the pots needed 3 coats in my case.

Great paint, goes on well
So far I rate Ronseal paints. They go on well and cover up previous colours. Time will tell how long they last before needing doing again, but so far so good!
