Preparation

Preparation

Back

Ensure all surfaces are free from any dust, dirt, wax, grease, oil or other surface contaminants that could affect the adhesion of the varnish.

Bare or New Timber

  1. Make good any holes or defects in the timber with Ronseal High Performance Wood Filler, Ronseal Multi Purpose Wood Filler or other suitable wood filler
  2. Lightly sand the wood, then remove any sanding dust and wipe with a lint-free cloth dampened with methylated spirits and allow to dry
  3. Remove any mould with a dedicated mould and mildew cleaner
  4. Open doors and windows to allow for good ventilation while varnishing

Previously Varnished Timber

Remove any loose, flaking or peeling coatings with a scraper or a dedicated varnish remover, then treat as New Timber.

Application

Application

Back

Always do a test area before starting any project to assess product suitability and final finish. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times. Stir thoroughly before and during use to insure a consistent finish.

  1. Apply the varnish evenly, using a good quality synthetic brush, in the direction of the wood grain
  2. Apply 2-3 coats, leaving 1 hour between coats
  3. Before applying the final coat, give the wood a quick sanding and wipe down with a lint-free cloth dampened with methylated spirit to help the varnish stick and give a smooth finish

Please Note: If you get any water on the varnish within the first couple of days, wipe it off gently with a clean, dry lint-free cloth. Do not rub it.

Cleaning Equipment

After use, brushes can be cleaned with warm, soapy water.

Aftercare

Aftercare

Back

Regular Cleaning

Varnished surfaces can be cleaned by wiping with a dry (or slightly dampened) lint-free cloth.

Deep Cleaning

For stubborn marks, a dedicated wood cleaner can be used. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions on the container.

Maintenance

If the finish begins to look worn over time, simply apply a fresh coat of Ronseal Diamond Hard Interior Varnish, following the Application instructions above.

Repair

To spot repair any scuffs or marks to the finish, simply clean the affected area and apply a fresh layer of varnish to the damaged area(s).

Back
Will the Diamond Interior Varnish stop my wardrobe from getting damp?

The varnish creates a film over the surface of the timber which gives it a layer protecting it against scuffs, abrasions and moisture. It is not designed to be in damp environments for a prolonged amount of time and if any moisture is left on the surface coating for an extended period this will deteriorate the film and can cause many problems. It is also worth noting that the timber must be completely dry and have a moisture content below 20% before any product can be applied to it.

Can Diamond Varnish be used on oil-based gel stain?

Without knowing the specifics of the stain is it difficult to say. We would advise a test area to assess the result.

How much will I be able to cover from a 750ml tin?

As this covers to 16m² per litre, per coat, we would expect a 750ml tin to cover approx 4.8m² with 3 coats.

Can I use Ronseal Diamond Interior Varnish on kitchen worktops?

We would recommend something which has been tried and tested with spillages and heat, giving a food safe finish. Why not call our Woodcare Experts on 01303 213838 to discuss your options.

Great product
Happy with the mahogany colour for interior wood. Applies well albeit mdf does soak up quite a lot of the stain so used more than anticipated. Would be great if they did 2ltr tins

Easy to use & gives a good finish
Ronseal is a long standing & reliable brand. This varnish is easy to apply & because it is water based dries very quickly, allowing further coats to be applied in record time.

Good product - needs better instructions
Tried putting the second coat on plywood lining in a shed when it was cold (maybe 5 degree C). It didn't go on well and took ages to dry. Nothing on the tin or your website suggests that applying in cold weather would be a problem, but when i found a data sheet on what i assume is a similar product (Ronseal Trade water-based interior varnish) it made it clear that water-based varnish should not be applied in conditions less than 10degree C. After sanding down and applying a third coat on warmer day it looks good though.

Slightly tacky finish
Easy to work with but once dry has a slightly odd tacky finish, which is a shame as it was used for a bannister.
